I MADE WOODEN WHEELS FOR MY MOUNTAIN BIKE - WILL THEY LAST?

- I made wooden wheels for my mountain bike - Will they last? Today I push the limits of these crazy MTB wheels made of wood to see which tricks, trails and jumps they can survive on, but will they actually work?
I've wanted to ride with wooden wheels for ages now and just couldn't think of a way to fit them to my bike, so I done a quick search and saw that Olabmx channel had done a similar video on his BMX and that gave me knowledge of how to fix the wood to my bike! So I rushed out, got some 18mm ply and began making my own back wheel, after a quick bike maintenance session we had some wooden wheels connected to my bike and it was time to get out and try it! First stop were the local trails to see if the wheels actually worked before slowly moving around to different locations. I rode a pump track an urban MTB freeride spot and then the final banger was to hit a huge jump at Phoenix bike park and pull off an unthinkable trick! But how long can these wheels really last?
I hope you enjoy the video!

Every time I think Sam has reached the limit of madness he takes it to new levels of insanity! 🤯
His balls are heavier than the wooden wheels 😹😹😹

The fact that this man can do a no hander backflip on a bike with wheels/tyres made of solid plywood just goes to show how much of it is the rider rather than the bike

This channel is so good for my mental health. He is so positive and so bubbly and so GENUINE that it just makes you absolutely smile. I have a complete shit day at work this afternoon and ditched out early to just come home. This has done so well at taking my mind off it and making me smile. 😀 This is that YT was invented for. Sam is an absolute legend.
Couldn't agree more brother cheers!!
You’re a sick individual with the skills to pull it off and the missing toot has a humbling badge of honor to it, wherever it lies.
I can't remember the last time I smiled from start to finish watching a video, thank you Sam for bringing that back for me 👌
Stoked to hear it!
Imagine being at your local pump track and seeing Sam show up, you're thinking it's going to be the most epic day getting a chance to ride with a legend, and then he pulls out a wooden wheeled bike. And suddenly you realize your day just got even MORE epic.
This video is hilarious. I needed this today.
I did not expect to see the back flip then the no hander 😀 Your a mad man.
I remember doing this when I was 10 which was 40 years ago. I did it with 20" wheels and jumped a 6 foot ramp on a very hard packed gravel road and the landing was extremely jarring on the wrists. I drove on those wooden wheels for 2 days before they finally fell completely apart, lol. Getting them wet is what sped up the process.
Probably the most cheerful person on youtube. Super enjoyable to watch any videos, especially seeing the pure enjoyment when on the bike. That's what it's all about :)
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
Watching Sam is good for my mental health, never fails to make me giggle. You’re an inspiration, always living life to the fullest. Legend.
Same. The youthful enthusiasm is really infectious I reckon. The main theme I pick up from all Sam Pilgrim vids, is that you're never too old to have fun (-no offense Sam) ➕
@@martyknox2218 I’m 43 now. No offense taken

same i dont even mountain bike or do anything cool, i just love the dudes energy. i aspire to live with his positivity and zest for life.
Out of the right wood and depending on the terrain they could last a lot longer than you think ,think about all the things that at one time had wooden wheels.
A composite could be much stronger and lighter too.
@The other Tony Dutch plywood is technically a composite material. So it is already a composite.
Mostly with steel or iron rims though.
Whack some evenly spaced big holes in to reduce the weight a bit. Then a coat of paint and you’re set!! Be interesting to see how well rim brakes would work or should I say woodwork! Hilarious, I made myself laugh with that one. Keep em coming Sam you legend!
Don’t apologize for your puns. We all hate them but we all make them. That was a good one.
I think we all need something like an engineering class by Sam

I love how you send stuff man like that no matter how sketch it is. you’re definitely inspiration. You can’t live in fear and I guess that’s the biggest thing about you. Awesome.
One of your best videos in awhile! Laughed constantly. Thanks Sam!
Thanks a lot mate!!
My favorite part of these DIYs is Sam always using a metal hammer to persuade everything into place.
I quite like when he used a car battery. Well, I think he did anyway?

This made me smile from ear to ear. You can’t ask for more than that.
I wanna see a “Sam to gold series” train for a event get some sick new tricks down and win!!! His happiness makes me happy and I’d love to see that

You could always screw some tyres round the edge to protect the wood a bit

This has to be the GREATEST VIDEO ON UA-cam!! THANKS FOR SHARING!
Hi Sam you probably wont see this but you inspired me to push my self out of my comfort zone and not stress just send it on jumps and I have come so far since watching you, love ur content
If you imagine it, it will happen. Honestly took me like 3 years to drop in a 4ft quarter pipe, now i can flip, 360... ride my bike backwards and no handed wheelie, start wheelies with one hand etc... i remember the days i couldn't even loft the front wheel properly (yes i mean to say loft, look it up haha) and i would literally dream about wheelying jumping etc it will happen before you know it, you gotta just stick at it ! Sam will most likely see this as he does tend to read comments
@@i-_-am-_-g1467 I did look it up. I was going to petty, but hats off to you. Loft as a verb means to propel high into the air. If you never said to look it up I wouldn't have learned such a fact.
It is pretty crazy to think about your own progress, I bmx and 3 years ago when I started I sucked so bad and now I can do so many tricks on so many different features it’s crazy. You just have to have the inspiration to do something and you can get it done
Well done dude, it’s good u are pushing your self out your comfort zone
Those NS rigid forks are actually super rare now and it kinda made me cringe seeing Sam ruin them like that but it was all for the dream i guess 😅
Anyone els but sam..... just cant help but love the dude.
Yeah lol, i had trouble finding RNS forks because they`re getting rarer by the day but analog forks are almost unobtainable these days.

Sam you're really helping cure my anxiety by just being so charming and funny. I started mountainbiking this summer for the first time since I was a kid because I needed a new sport and found your channel by chance in the process. I'm absolutely ADDICTED to the channel now and watching this, the weirdest shit, and enjoying it so much. Always looking forward to seeing your new vids man :D
Excellent you nutter! Once when I was too skint to buy a new front wheel I bolted a bit if 2x4 into the front forks with an inline skate wheel attached with a couple of aluminium plates. It rode so well that I cycled it from Brighton to London. Never had tricks skills like you displayed there even on a proper bike. Excellent, really made me smile.
after watching for some years i can say this channel is pure unadulterated fun every video theres not much like it, never stop Sam you are awesome
the slow rolling is from how hard the Tyre(wood) is. You can see in your footage everytime it hits something its deflecting, ie slowing you down.
On super smooth stuff itll feel fast(once actually up to speed) but on anything else itll slow you.
sam you are just a great guy. positive energy from start to finish. you made my day. and believe me my days are shitty at the moment
Awesome.. how crazy are you, Sam.. riding a bike with wooden wheels on UA-cam and trick riding as well.. bonkers, but highly entertaining, as is all your content.. I guess that is why you are a winner with all of your UA-cam subscribers.. love your content 👏😁
Thanks for always being so positive - always put a smile on my face. Cheers!
Yes Pilgs. Im gonna enjoy this so hard.
Absolutely fudging redoinkulous... love it!
I have a passion for woodworking, and this video triggered me in so many ways. I absolutely loved it.
This is my all time favorite Sam pilgrim video ever. Wooden wheel mtb races seem like a very good idea.

What a shred. Love the random ideas 🤟🤙
I have no idea how all your crazy bikes even end up working. Obviously the precision engineering and curb helps alot. To the skyyyyyyyyy
It’s all in the precision engineering 😂
Most underrated UA-camr for sure! You're awesome Sam keep up the great work!
You've successfully reinvented the wooden wheel! You absolutely bossed it!
The wooden wheels were definitely a cool experiment. They give off the appearance as if the bike is floating in the air after it takes off on the jumps. I was waiting for them to crack or even break because I wasn't sure how well plywood would hold up while being exposed to that kind of stress. I was thinking they would give out sooner or later, but it surprised me on how well they held up. Overall, great video. It gave me something fun to watch as I wind down from my day at work.
Needed a couple of iron tyres shrunk onto them
This might be my favorite video of yours of all time. It just kept escalating and thus getting more awesome. Great job dude!
Brilliant as always, your one of a kind Sam! 👏
i have never heard of you before, but i'm so glad youtube recommended you to me
you're seem like such an awesome person
One of the top 10 videos that you've ever made thanks sam .I thoroughly enjoyed it🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️
I love the sound they make when they tap the concrete. Also how it reflects the sound of the freewheel, almost sounding motorized.
"If you need a new wheel just grow one" LOL that was funny.
I actually held my face and said "Not the stair set of doom!" out loud. Absolutely hilarious, and insane... you make my day every single video. Just brilliant :-) Today is going to be epic, every time!
You are extremely talented but I love how honest you are about how scary jumps can be even with your amazing skill
This was great! I love your Frankenbike experiments. Am amazed that you were able to do so much using those wooden wheels. Awesome!
Having spent a sizeable chunk of my life in the past living, and cycling, in Colchester I do so like seeing the old stomping ground! Especially the "steps of doom"/bridge by the Station/ASDA - used to go over those daily 😀

Glad you like the vids!!!
Mate! each single video of yours make my day. Thank you very very much for that that’s all we need nowadays (not an overstatement). Cheers
Crazy how he can totally make this stuff work, and do completely respectable tricks.
you could even put tyres over the wood, & just leave them on, it actually looks like it is dealing really well, tyres would only just give a little bit of longer life I reckon, you've really put those wheels through their paces.
scammers are trying to get you
Wow! Just an absolute legend. Could ride anything and make it look easy. Oh, and finished off at my current fave bike park 😎
Nice wheels!
If you need them more lightweight maybe you could drill out some cirkels :D
Oh yeah sick plan!

i want giant saw blades next, sort of a yin and yang with the wooden wheelset
Love your Energy Sam. Always makes me want to go out and ride!
This is almost as good as you walking through Whistler Village the night of slopestyle. Asking all the people on the stroll where the party was and how come everyone went home early.
It’s the second time I’ve been in close proximity to you and both times you were asking where the party was.
Albeit, 6 years apart.

This is definitely one of the most durable builds you have done, once the wheels had broken-in they seemed to get better.
OMG 😲 that flip was fantastic 👏
Could you flip a Chopper ??
Flip a chopper Sam please , for an old X Gen and long time boxing coach 🙏 👍
I don't even know what I would say if I saw a dude with a tooth missing, a helmet on, and with a bike with wheels made of wood cycling past me, doing backflips, tailwhips etc like its noone business.
I honestly think I would just think I was dreaming...
That back flip was absolutely insane
Just found your channel, you are an absolute legend, my friend!
This is awesome. Let's see you testing them in some corners, roosting berms and doing cutties etc, would be interesting to see how they hold up to that kind of stress
It's good to know that if he wants replacement 36" wheels he can just cut some out of plywood.
That is just flipping amazing.
watching him do this makes me feel more confident in my bike building skills
yes, but...... Will it flair? love your ideas and thinking outside the box.
Now all he needs to do is a bike with square wheels 😭
haha! Great idea!
ive seen your vids before but i had no choice but to subscribe after this absolute madness! Cheers you mad man!!!
and YES wooden wheels 2.0 for sureeee mate 😛
Yeah dude keep killing it
For a prototype or 2nd try at this, you could try filling the wood with resin in order to prevent it from breaking apart
By reinforcing the weeles with resin you would also be able to cut out a design into the wood, like car tires have to reduce weight.
