  • On Saturday night, Keith Thornton experienced what he said was “one of the hardest shifts of my entire public safety career.” The Chicago dispatcher was working as two officers were shot during a traffic stop. One of them, 29-year-old Ella French, was killed and the other remains in critical condition.

@@MartinAston00 .. I disagree that highlighting this example takes away from the other despatcher s who handle stressful/traumatic situations. I believe that by highlighting this case, we, the generally uninformed public, are expressing our appreciation to all despatchers. Speaking for myself, I thought I knew what the despatchers were dealing with, but after listening to this audio I now know that I had NO IDEA how many elements they have to deal with all at the same time. I just want to remind you, if the officer wasn't out there victimizing people for victimless traffic violations, he'd still be alive. At the end of the day this cop earned his living by taking money out of people's pockets. I also want to remind you that just because the government will pay these people to steal from the rest of society to generate money for the City/State does not make it morally right. At the end of the day if this cop choose to do a job that contributed to society, he'd still be alive. No sympathy from me, what goes around comes around as they say.

They do this day in and day out, paramedics, firefighters, police and dispatchers. We must find a way to get young people to respect these people once again. I know there are bad ones... I've been there..... But there are so many good people just doing their jobs.

No one has a problem with Firefighters or ENTs. They have a problem with Cops. There aren’t bad Cops there are bad systems. Systems that allow “bad Cops” to become Cops in the first place. Systems that protect “bad cops”. A culture of silence that protects “bad Cops”. Fix that, and maybe we can talk about younger generations “respecting” police officers.

Keith Thornton did a job far beyond his pay grade. Calm, crisp and professional. Assumed a solid leadership role in the midst of panic, tragedy and chaos. Ensured that the two officers (one of whom was ultimately killed in the line of duty) and triaged appropriately. Despite the gravity of the situation- he insisted they both be taken to a Level 1 trauma center as opposed to closest hospital. Simultaneously, setting up perimeters to keep shooters from escaping, calling for air support, clearing route to hospital, instructing to initiate CPR and alerting trauma center prior to arrival of both officers. The City of Chicago, in particular, their police department and first responders, should be so thankful they have such an outstanding individual working with them. One could argue that his in-depth knowledge of the city and its health care systems certainly contributed to the survival of the second officer shot. I hope that he is precept ing new dispatchers as they come on board. Exceptional guy!

This isn’t the time to point fingers nor blame. Chicago is a great city it’s unfortunate the crime rate is in an state of emergency. Lightfoot can only do so much this issue started way before her. They should have known this was going to happen when they closed all the housing projects and placed families low income through out the city what did they think was going to happen cause they wanted prime real-estate areas. I understand what they was striving to do but they went about it the wrong way.

I listen to 911 calls all the time, and this dispatcher is absolutely the most efficient and professional with a clear speaking voice I've ever heard. Most don't even listen to the answers given by the caller, misquoting them when verifying info, asking the same questions repeatedly and openly doubting the validity of the call. Chicago should be very proud and thankful to have this man on staff.
