So, what's your take? Can someone be a Catholic feminist, or, given what the term feminism has come to mean, is it incompatible with being a good Catholic?
Matt Fradd I think it’s possible, if keeping a necessary focus on the catholic faith. For me catholic feminism is less about seeking political rights, and more about striving to grow and follow on the example of Mother Mary, who I would say is the absolute height of authentic femininity. For me, catholic feminism is about trying to grow in the virtues, holiness, grace, and seeking to do so by imitating and studying the lives of female saints as my best examples. (Certainly not the secular idea of feminism.. and I know I may not speak for all catholic feminists, but this is my take on it and what I try to personally as I seek to be the woman God intended for me to be.)
It's totally impossible. Women are the heart of the home and their number one duty is to take care of their husband and children, just as the husband's duty to to provide and take care of his wife and children. A good Catholic woman cannot work and be a the light and the heart of the home. My mom, God rest her soul, used to say that feminism was the beginning of all the trouble we have in the world because of modernism. She blamed women, just as Eve was responsible for the downfall of man. My wife was happy staying at home and taking care of her family. She did God's Will and what was right for her family. She never regretted giving of herself, even though feminists look down on her as a lazy woman with no ambition.

Feminism is the idea that men and women should be treated with equal dignity and respect. Perhaps the question should be “can one be a Catholic and NOT a feminist?”

If you take feminism for what it originally was; The demand that men and women should be equal before the law, in rights and responsibilities, dignity, consideration and treatment, then yes. Let’s not forget that’s what feminism stood up for originally. Also, even though most people don’t know it, feminism stood up against brothels and demanded that men should be as chaste and faithful as they expected their wives to be. I think that’s quite catholic! Now, viewing abortion as a women’s right, that’s incompatible with Catholicism-Or with biology for that matter
That's not what it originally was. The document that literally declared feminism (or at least American Feminism) opens with with claiming all of history has been men oppressing women and before it ends claims that if women were in charge society will be completely better. While the alternative starter of feminism and french feminism was part of the french revolution and we all know what a God hating mess that was. The fact that people believe Feminism was ever not it has always been shows how good they are at marketing.
Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent The Duties of Married People The more easily to preserve the holy state (of marriage) from dissensions, the duties of husband and wife as inculcated by St. Paul and by the Prince of the Apostles must be explained. Duties Of A Husband It is the duty of the husband to treat his wife generously and honourably. It should not be forgotten that Eve was called by Adam his companion. The woman, he says, whom thou gavest me as a companion. Hence it was, according to the opinion of some of the holy Fathers, that she was formed not from the feet but from the side of man; as, on the other hand, she was not formed from his head, in order to give her to understand that it was not hers to command but to obey her husband. The husband should also be constantly occupied in some honest pursuit with a view to provide necessaries for the support of his family and to avoid idleness, the root of almost every vice. He is also to keep all his family in order, to correct their morals, and see that they faithfully discharge their duties. Duties Of A Wife On the other hand, the duties of a wife are thus summed up by the Prince of the Apostles: Let wives be subject to their husbands. that if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word by the conversation of the wives, considering your chaste conversation with fear. Let not their adorning be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel: but the hidden man of the heart in the incorruptibility of a quiet and meek spirit, which is rich in the sight of God. For after this manner heretofore the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord. To train their children in the practice of virtue and to pay particular attention to their domestic concerns should also be especial objects of their attention. The wife should love to remain at home, unless compelled by necessity to go out; and she should never presume to leave home without her husband's consent. Again, and in this the conjugal union chiefly consists, let wives never forget that next to God they are to love their husbands, to esteem them above all others, yielding to them in all things not inconsistent with Christian piety, a willing and ready obedience. Ben Sira 26:1-3,16-19,24 [1]HAPPY is the husband of a good wife: for the number of his years is double. [2]A virtuous woman rejoiceth her husband: and shall fulfil the years of his life in peace. [3]A good wife is a good portion, she shall be given in the portion of them that fear God, to a man for his good deeds. [16]The grace of a diligent woman shall delight her husband, and shall fat his bones. [17]Her discipline is the gift of God. [18]Such is a wise and silent woman, and there is nothing so much worth as a well instructed soul. [19]A holy and shamefaced woman is grace upon grace. [24]As everlasting foundations upon a solid rock, so the commandments of God In the heart of a holy woman. 1 Timothy 2:9-14 [9]In like manner, women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire: [10]But, as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works. [11]Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. [12]But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to use authority over the man: but to be in silence. [13]Adam was first formed; then Eve. [14]And Adam was not seduced; but the woman, being seduced, was in the transgression. 1 Timothy 3:4-5,11 [4]One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all chastity. [5]But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? [11]The women in like manner: chaste, not slanderers, but sober, faithful in all things. 1 Corinthians 11:3,7-9 [3]But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man: and the head of Christ is God. [7]The man indeed ought not to cover his head: because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. [8]For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. [9]For the man was not created for the woman: but the woman for the man. Titus 2:3-5,9 [3]The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well: [4]That they may teach the young women to be wise, to love their husbands, to love their children. [5]To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands: that the word of God be not blasphemed. [9]Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters: in all things pleasing, not gainsaying: 1 Peter 3:1-7 [1]In like manner also, let wives be subject to their husbands: that, if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word, by the conversation of the wives, [2]Considering your chaste conversation with fear. [3]Whose adorning, let it not be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel: [4]But the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit which is rich in the sight of God. [5]For after this manner heretofore, the holy women also who trusted in God adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: [6]As Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters you are, doing well and not fearing any disturbance. [7]Ye husbands, likewise dwelling with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the female as to the weaker vessel and as to the co-heirs of the grace of life: that your prayers be not hindered. Ephesians 5:22-24,33 [22]Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord: [23]Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body. [24]Therefore as the church is subject to Christ: so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things. [33]Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular love for his wife as himself: And let the wife fear her husband. Colossians 3:18-21 [18]Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord. [19]Husbands, love your wives and be not bitter towards them. [20]Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing to the Lord. [21]Fathers, provoke not your children to indignation, lest they be discouraged.

The take is always the bishops and priests have the final say but the women do all the work. This isn’t equal authority. As women we humble ourselves to not want to be known yet we contribute in different ways but just as much as a bishop or priest can. The only difference is we get no recognition for anything and we have ZERO say in higher authority. I do not believe women should priests or bishops (women in some circumstances can become cardinals and even a pope) but I believe that mothers and sisters have such wisdom and emotional intelligence and even leadership skills that are just pushed down not due to God’s will but due to the dominance of men in society!!!
Yes! Feminism is the idea that women and men should be treated with the same dignity and love because we are beloved children of God. Just as there is Christian Humanism to counter Secular Feminism, there must be Christian Feminism to counter Secular Feminism. Whether our society realizes it or not, imitating Christ IS the solution to the problem.
Koolyococo because not all Catholics are feminists. Also, why can you not call yourself more than one thing? Would you ask the same thing of someone who said they were pro-life?
Erica Being pro-life does not contradict being Catholic(all Catholics should be pro-life). Calling yourself a feminist absolutely contradicts calling yourself a Catholic.
To be completely honest, reading many of these embarrassing and in many cases downright hateful, comments has renewed my fire for Catholic feminism and reminded me what a deep, pressing need there truly is for it. Appreciate it!
Dominik Agejev hi, Dominik! I know this may be difficult to understand, but I don’t actually care who I appeal to, and I would certainly never form a belief system to satisfy the opinions of other human beings. That has proved a foolish move time and time again. I simply believe that women and men should be treated equally socially, economically and politically. But your kind and open hearted words , from one Catholic striving for holiness and a better world to another, definitely made a positive impact on my life. I greatly appreciate your attempt to understand WHY I may feel feminism is an important modifier before Catholic, just as I appreciate your kindness in wanting to earnestly learn about a viewpoint that differs from your own without rudeness or assumptions. Beautifully done, my friend.
Personally I am seeing far more comments based on a solid rhetoric and presented in a very concise and professional manner than I am “hateful” or “embarrassing” ones. I have yet to see any argument in favor of modern feminism that convinces me it is in any way in keeping with Christian theology. All Catholics should be wary of ideologies that are disjointed from Catholicism and serve their own agenda. All a Catholic needs in his/her life is Catholicism.
In the Bible clearly Lord God said that Adam is supposed to work and Eve is supposed to give birth and submit to her husband. That’s if you are married before marriage I guess a woman can work.
Matt I'm very disappointed in you. While this woman made some good points , she's clearly afraid to use the "F" word because certain mysoginists within the Catholic community (Timothy Gordon) have made it a dirty word. Why not get an actual self- proclaimed Catholic Prolife Feminist on your show? I was fortunate enough to encounter these women when I went to the March for Life in Ireland Summer 2019, and one of the speakers who was a politician at the event defined it perfectly: "Real Feminism isn't telling women they only have two choices, get an abortion or live in poverty. Real feminism is telling women they can have this baby and still have other options " she then went on to talk about how, they won't be alone, we as the prolife community will help them (she worked with a prolife agency that assisted women with unwanted pregnancies.) She also emphasised that true feminism fights for the rights of women FROM conception to natural death, so by nature abortion is anti-feminism. Please have someone like this woman on your show (I'm so sorry I can't remember her name) and not ignoramuses like Timothy Gordon who are mysoginists (which is taught against in the Catholic Catechism along with racism, etc) or women who are "ambivelent about the word" as opposed to actually understanding its true definition. (Modern feminism has ofcourse been twisted into advocating for "reproductive rights etc" ) but this is another twisting of what femimism actually stands for. It stands for the anti -oppression of women, which Catholic Prolife feminists understand that there is no greater oppression in our society than the multi -billion dollar abortion industry. However, another oppression we face is from certain individuals within the Catholic community who try to tell women that they must be married and have children by a certain age. God calls women to (and men) to different walks of life. (Prime examples, St. Joan of Arc, St.Catherine of Sienna). Furthermore some women are unable to have children so imagine how they feel in response to this rigid gender ideology, that their worth lies solely in motherhood and marriage.
Timothy Gordon isn’t a misogynist. He’s an orthodox Catholic who understands the political underpinnings of feminism better than you do. Do you really imagine that when Marxism completely takes over in the West that claiming to be feminist will save you? Real feminists see Christianity as patriarchal. Therefore it has to go. Hard core feminists are all about abortion and by trying to squeeze Catholicism into feminism you’re killing the Catholic part, except more slowly than abortion. They reject the Virgin Mary calling her the most vile things or seek to make her a goddess.
It is not the males who made feminism a dirty word. It is the thousands of feminists out there who have hijacked the movement and used it to fight for such lies as abortion and even gender ideology.
Feminism is a totally anti-Christian ideology. This ideology only brought harm. Feminism is responsible for the destruction of families, for the objectification of women as a sexual instrument through the sexual revolution, for the death of millions of children in abortion. There isn't any saint in the Catholic Church that you can say was a feminist or that represents something of this perverse movement. Where are feminists fighting for women's rights in Islamic countries? Have you ever seen feminists attack Islam the same way they do Christians? You don't want the truth, you want to hear something you like. It is entirely possible that there is any connection with Christianity and feminism. If you read books by feminist authors you would know this.
So, what's your take? Can someone be a Catholic feminist, or, given what the term feminism has come to mean, is it incompatible with being a good Catholic?

Because we all deserve to be treated with respect regardless of gender, age, race etc. The issue I see is that theres so much chaos and sin in the world and gender is such a sensitive topic that’s it’s difficult to speak about. Even this comment section is fired up on the subject 😅
Feminism is the idea that men and women should be treated with equal dignity and respect. Perhaps the question should be “can one be a Catholic and NOT a feminist?”
@Matt Blaise Feminism isn't just about legality. It's about social equality, as well. Please sit down, in person, with a feminist and let him or her explain to you the places when women are seen as "less than" socially.
Feminists fight for abortion and sexual degeneracy so no. Stop with your twisted definitions to make feminism seem righteous. Feminism and liberalism are inherently anti Catholicism.
Garrett hey Garrett, some feminists are pro-abortion, just like some Republicans are racists and some Floridians are murderers and some priests have done horrible things. All are not and have not. And I’m not going to stop my anything. But thank you for your take. Check out the Catholic Feminist Podcast. It’ll blow your mind.
Erica - your definition of 'Feminism' is totally at odds with reality. Feminism today is evil, it comes from Communism and is anti-Catholic, anti-life and anti-God.
@@erica708 - You are pushing a hidden agenda. You know that all feminists stand for abortion ; the Feminist never speaks against Mohommadons atrocities against women; Feminists con women into thinking they should work like men until it's too late for them to reproduce etc. Feminism is evil. Go peddle it on Mohommadons sites. Catholics are true women !!!!!!!
No Catholic Feminism. Stop trying to reclaim that word and make it into something good. It’s been wrong since the beginning. There’s no need to try to save it. Be CATHOLIC. Period.
amen
Since the beginning? Idk, I like to think Jesus would have supported women voting
@@smcjohnson first wave feminism was about way more than just women voting. You also have to understand what the right to vote meant at that time in history. That’s why many women opposed the feminists in that struggle.
Answer: never
No you can't it contradicts patrochary which God instituted, wives submit to husbands and husbands likened to christ
What an excellent answer she gives!
Being catholic gives a person all the dignity he or she could ever imagine. I'm more and more convinced that feminism is contrary to the Gospel

Lord God loves traditional family: man working woman looking after the children and the whole family to love one another and adore Lord God

I don't understand this talk about feminism, you don't hear men calling themselves a masculine, I don't get it.
N O, easy answer.
Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent
The Duties of Married People
The more easily to preserve the holy state (of marriage) from dissensions, the duties of husband and wife as inculcated by St. Paul and by the Prince of the Apostles must be explained.
Duties Of A Husband
It is the duty of the husband to treat his wife generously and honourably.
Duties Of A Wife
On the other hand, the duties of a wife are thus summed up by the Prince of the Apostles: Let wives be subject to their husbands. that if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word by the conversation of the wives, considering your chaste conversation with fear.
Ben Sira 26:1-3,16-19,24
[1]HAPPY is the husband of a good wife: for the number of his years is double.
1 Timothy 2:9-14
[9]In like manner, women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire:
[10]But, as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works.
1 Timothy 3:4-5,11
[4]One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all chastity.
[5]But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?
[11]The women in like manner: chaste, not slanderers, but sober, faithful in all things.
1 Corinthians 11:3,7-9
[3]But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man: and the head of Christ is God.
[7]The man indeed ought not to cover his head: because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man.
[8]For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
[9]For the man was not created for the woman: but the woman for the man.
Titus 2:3-5,9
[3]The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well:
[4]That they may teach the young women to be wise, to love their husbands, to love their children.
[5]To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands: that the word of God be not blasphemed.
[9]Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters: in all things pleasing, not gainsaying:
1 Peter 3:1-7
[1]In like manner also, let wives be subject to their husbands: that, if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word, by the conversation of the wives,
[2]Considering your chaste conversation with fear.
[3]Whose adorning, let it not be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel:
[4]But the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit which is rich in the sight of God.
[5]For after this manner heretofore, the holy women also who trusted in God adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:
[6]As Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters you are, doing well and not fearing any disturbance.
[7]Ye husbands, likewise dwelling with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the female as to the weaker vessel and as to the co-heirs of the grace of life: that your prayers be not hindered.
Ephesians 5:22-24,33
[22]Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord:
[23]Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body.
[24]Therefore as the church is subject to Christ: so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things.
[33]Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular love for his wife as himself: And let the wife fear her husband.
Colossians 3:18-21
[18]Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord.
[19]Husbands, love your wives and be not bitter towards them.
[20]Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
[21]Fathers, provoke not your children to indignation, lest they be discouraged.

Would Joan of Arc be considered a historical Catholic feminist?
No!!!! She was obeying the Will of God. She had one task and she never once mentioned women's right to kill their own unborn children, for instance.😀
@@tabbycat9701 Today's feminists have twisted and evil ideologies but you can't compare Joan of Arc or other historical women with today's standards. Joan of Arc stood strong in her faith and didn't back down to society's pressures. She's a national heroine. I believe she's a true feminist. I am not comparing her to today's twisted and evil idea of feminism.
@@marcihf9763 - St Joan of Arc would never wish to be labelled "feminist". She was a true servant of God. Feminists are against God and refuse to submit to the role He gave them. St Joan of Arc was utterly obedient - even to death - just like Her Saviour and His Holy Mother.
@@marcihf9763 same!
@@tabbycat9701 ofc she'd never wish to be labelled Feminist. But oh well. I suppose you mean well.
Catholic feminism has a bad connotation, call it “women dignity and her calling “ the term feminism takes away from what the concern is.
Did the much forgotten corporal punishment removal movement from schools and society actually lead to the birth of feminism.
No it did not
This lady talks about obligations!!...How non PC is that in today's western world?
Frank Emanuele Why no just call yourself Catholic?
Koolyococo because not all Catholics are feminists. Also, why can you not call yourself more than one thing? Would you ask the same thing of someone who said they were pro-life?
Lol nah feminism in any sense is dumb
Erica Being pro-life does not contradict being Catholic(all Catholics should be pro-life). Calling yourself a feminist absolutely contradicts calling yourself a Catholic.
Koolyococo your idea of feminism does.

To anyone who thinks it’s ok to be a feminist and a Catholic please read Genesis 3:16-19
@@brendabrenda6782 you're so correct.
Wrong. The correct answer is read scripture. Read Saint Paul and stop taking a sinful outlook. Feminism is Antichristian.
The answer is no.
Just be a catholic woman.
