    I took the Canon EOS R3 and the Sony a1 out into the Real World to a College Football game to test out their Autofocus. I used the Canon 400 2.8 RF and Sony 400 2.8 E and recorded both EVF's with the Atomos Ninja V so you get to see the focus working...or not working. The big question here is, did Canon surpass Sony's amazing Autofocus?

Given that stickiness was a recurring discussion point and you showed the nicely intuitive Canon menu for controlling this, I would have liked you to have shown us the Sony menu and the settings you chose. Your videos are so much more relevant than those from other photographers. And I agree with you, make the effort to fill the frame. Heavily crop only when you have no choice.

    Good compare and shows how close they are, i think what we are seeing is that the canon has about a year more of training (no pun intended) we know they for example trained the detection for helmets while the sony A1 was not (yet?). Both the canon R3 and nikon Z9 are trained on more subjects and use-cases as the sony. As a sony A1 user think sony got a little slow in updating their eye-af and tracking since the other 2 where well basicly 2+ years ago. We notice that in the quick adding of bird detect mode on the sony that seems a little rushed. Now the good news is that this is all software base and after about a year we can expect sony to react with a software update to also add some of these more wide detection modes (like helmets) and maybe even a 'unified' focus system like the nikon has. One thing that will for sure help the A1 vs R3 (not Z9) is using the 'crop' dial on that lens where it jumps right into crop mode the reason is that the tracking system works on the image it gets and eyes/birds are detected much faster (and stay) when they are bigger in the image. Hope next test we see a compare of what you guys call soccer since i think they will match up better. But again as a sony A1 owner i fully see and feel both the R3 and Z9 are better trained for subject detection then the A1 at this point... Your move sony in the area of machine learning and showing what the new cpu's inside still have left and what the software developers have been able to optimize over the last year to give more of the cpu cycles back to that part of the camera. Lastly i noticed the A1 seems to remember the last subject somehow between bursts so say you zoom in on a bird and it gets the eye and you move away from it stop shooting and go back to it it finds the eye quicker not tested this fully but this might be helpful at times not 100% sure how it works yet but clearly it seems to remember 1 or 2 subjets back. Now lets see once the R3 and Z9 are fully shipping if sony announced the A1's first software update and if the area of subject detection gets tuned.

    I am curious to see which direction Sony will take with the A9III after the release of the A1 (Top of the line).
    I think Sony will probably never go to a full body like the R3, but keep the 24MP, but a new sensor for speed,...
    Do you think the R3 is in the same category as the A9 series?
    A comparison like this, probably better?
    R3 - A9II (A9III later)
    Z9 - A1

      @pgulysse1 2 роки тому

      @@chanjeff4406 You are probably right. Unless they want to make it cheaper and keep it 24MP. But as you said, what's the point? A1, even with its big MP count is great, the Z9 as well (as per the reviews to date). Probably Canon was kind of forced to mention the R3 not a flagship after the release of the A1, and now Z9. Great products for professionals who really need and want them, and can afford those for their job(ROI, they are not for everyone). Let's wait and see... thanks.

    Sony A1 is sitting on BH, Adorama, and other major retailer shelves...seriously doubt the same will hold true for the R3 and Z9. Also, if you add Sony's grip and two slow CF-A 160 cards, the price is closer to $8K.

    I shoot Canon DSLRs so I was hoping for good news from the R3. However, my personal preference aside, I enjoy the competition among the big 3 (Canon, Nikon, & Sony). I, too, thought the Canon was better with autofocus performance, but I was concerned that my personal bias was clouding my thoughts. It was nice to see that Jared's words matched my thoughts about autofocus performance. I understand why the A1 is such a difficult camera to "dethrone". It's wonderful. So is the R3. Very good video, very helpful comparison even for a hobbyist such as myself.

      From what's been said from several sources, Canon will be tweaking the Eye Control during a good few f/w updates! I suspect many will try it initially then not use it - it's not the headline feature of the R3 - it's AF selection sounds good without it. The AF tracking on the R3, A1 & Z9 are all pretty damn good. How each handle bird's eye reflections on water will be interesting but the difference in distance therefore focus will probably be insignificant anyway.

I agree that it'd be kinda cool to have a buffer-bar like the sony or something similar tho.

I just can't afford these mirorless cameras. And I prefer having a battery that holds up to over 2000 photos on a charge as a bonus :D. Reviewing the EVF footage is like watching a painter paint instead of looking at the final painting. The only reason to do it is to appreciate the work of the painter/photographer. What really matters is that the final image is in focus. The box on the eye doesn't actually matter, as long as the camera is actually tracking the subject and is staying in focus. Thanks for the view of the EVF though, it's amazing to watch!

    The box doesn’t 100% correlate to where the camera is actually focusing, If the sony on the images acquired the same amount of images as the Canon it doesn’t really matter if it’s slightly off as that is just software, Nikon also acquired more images then what you would think out from the box, so I really think we should be careful with over estimate the box and it’s meaning, obviously we prefer to be as precise as possible to where the camera is actually focusing but being slightly off isn’t a huge deal breaker.
    Also in my experience these brands tend to do better at different sports, so while one might slightly edge one in one, the other might do it in another. It’s simply has to do with how long, how much and how many different subjects it has been trained at. Canon is well know for their abilities with sports with helmets. Sony generally doesn’t seem to have much of a foothold in American market compared to in Europe and in Europe helmets aren’t something you see much in major sports.
    Also I would kinda expect a lower resolution to potential be faster at focusing with the same technology, when Sony release the A9iii I would expect it to actually outperform the A1 in AF-C

    Still shooting a 1Dx and see how far the AF has come, while it seems just yesterday the 1Dx AF was king and warranted $6500. I'd imagine the R6/5/3 will have a ten year shelf life easily compared to say how short the 5D/2/3/4 lifespans were. The short time I owned a 7D MK II showed me the future with on sensor dual pixel AF - if only that had translated into FF DSLR bodies for a reasonable price as the 5D4 is still overpriced when the R6 is so near in cost.
