You did a beautiful job with my wife’s old car. We had no idea how rusty it was underneath . With the cat converter out of the way, the engine will probably last forever. Great video.
@bakedbeansgarage116 you sure will, you have a great personality the quality is great for starting, the edition is very well done the jokes are very nice, its success from here on, and I'm sure one day you will get your collab, rob seams a very approachable person, maybe some day im rotting for you
I did a Jeep XJ headliner the same way, rainbow striped fleece and 3M spray glue. Thanks to the lack of sunroof I was able to do it without actually removing it from the car!
Fantastic stuff, fleece headliner to give you the feeling of coziness while waiting for the engine to get up to temperature in winter, complements for the color choice.
-permanent and switched +12v are swapped by factory on vag cars iso connectors so that's just an extension. They often have connectors for easier changing. -The red wire is the antenna amplifier feed it should be connected to a switched +12v. - 24:20 Those are water heater glow plugs giving you a LITTLE bit of heating if it's below ?5°C?when the car gets started.
The stock vw antenna has a rf amplifier at the base that needs power. The stock vw radio powers it. An aftermarket radio needs an adapter that converts the connector and provides power for the rf amplifier. That is what that extra wire is for. Connect it to switched ignition power.
Man, I miss my Beetle. It was a 2.slow and had a lot of problems but I got it for cheap and beat the hell out of it until I got too lazy to put a new cam sensor in it, paid a shop to do it and they put it back together out of time. Shame it went out like it did. Really makes me want to get on the classifieds and find another to screw around with.
When talking TDI, personally as a Scandinavian, I love the 1.9 TDI engine. For everyone I know who've owned a car with that engine, it was never the engine that died, it was either rust, electric failure or just a crash that finished off their car. But, personally, despite of the engine being reliable enough to out live yourself, I just love the sound of it, especially in the Volkswagen Touran.
Pro tip: use a coarser bristle brush attachment with your shopvac. Instead of foam everywhere, you scratch it off with the bristles and the vacuum sucks it up right away
I never liked the beetle before but I love your work on it and I love your video keep it up 👍 You are a perfect presentation talking super funny youtuber👍
I have the same cheap Android head unit in my Volvo 940, the top lines up with the aftermarket radio surround perfectly, so you can set your phone on top in the groove and have 2 displays in your car.
Wow! The headliner looks so pretty considering it's a beetle! Great job, now it only needs a nice paintjob and optionally some nicer rims... idk if you guys in the US get the Audi A1 but it has the same wheel mount as the MK4 platform, with much much nicer and more elegant wheel designs. These are the wheels I got to replace my Polo's steelies! SIDE NOTE: I don't agree with the radio choice solely based on the fact that those chinese units feel really cheap and don't sound very good, but worst of all, the one I got died after 10ish months, and many people on forums think that. If this car really is your daily and you want to keep it for some time, I'd invest in some sony/pioneer 1-din units that have a pop-out screen. Again, congrats! Now I really want to see what happens to the other one :)
Haven’t gotten to the end yet, so you may correct yourself eventually. But the “three coolant temp sensors” in that pipe under the vacuum pump? Those are not sensors, they’re basically glow plugs. Only equipped on manual cars, supposedly they help warm the engine up more quickly? Not entirely sure, but they hardly ever fail, so I’ve never experienced what it’s like without them.
@ I mean, to be fair, who would expect glow plugs in the coolant? And they look like they could be sensors, so I definitely get it. I don’t think those circuits are even monitored by the computer, so even if one of them ever fails (which, again, never happens, unlike the glow plugs in the engine), you would have no way of knowing. My Jetta has 334k on it and is still rocking the factory units, and last I checked with a multimeter they all still had continuity. Excellent video btw. You are a lot better about actually executing on the aesthetic stuff than I am… many of those end up in my “maybe someday, but in reality never gonna happen” pile. Currently mine is parked due to split axle boots, and while it has been sitting, it spontaneously dumped all its coolant out, so add that to the list. Sigh. It’s an outrageously reliable drivetrain, but at the end of the day it’s still a 22 year old high mileage German car built in Mexico.
Interesting to use isoprpopyl alcohol to clean those god awful plastics.👍 Cool to see some Mk4 stuff on here.😎 I have a mk4 golf wagon, 4wd, tdi wich I've lifted and added some classic off road attributes to; brush guard, wheel arch flares, aux lights, roof rack and so on... It's my winter beater here in the dark north of Sweden and performing flawlessly. Cheers!
For whatever it's worth, an ebay stereo wiring adapter harness had the constant and switched 12v inputs the wrong way around when I installed one into another similar era VW product. 03 Skoda Superb.
No chiptune to for engine? Quite nice to have 120hp or so. Some say the fuel efficiency increases as well. Anyways. New to the channel. Really liked this. Subscribed!
I literally have that exact same head unit in my silver 2000 Tdi beetle mine has 390k on it the radio works great but it has overheated on me before and frozen up but i use it daily for gig work I use the apple car play side of it tho not android auto
Hello, I just subscribed to your channel. I have a vw shop in OKC. Feel like the only guy out there working on the Vdubs. Have a 99 new beetle mk4 2.0L 5speed with 291k . 2003 Vw Jetta GLS 2.0L 5spd with 244k doing timing belt and all front suspension again. And a 2001 VW new beetle tdi 5spd with 70k. If ya need any parts let me know.
As soon as you drove in the 2nd big and mentioned the first one is in worse condition(rust) than the latter… I just assumed “shell swap” But apparently you’re just fixing the rusty one…..? I’m confused
You talk just like the car wizard. Your delivery and cadence is just spot on.
Also a hint of AvE
13:05 oh boy my favorite sound
17:57 this video is awesome
19:50 it only gets better
Finding FranzJ here was not on my bingo card
I may have found a new favourite car channel, praise be the algorithm
praise the code!
You did a beautiful job with my wife’s old car.

Great video.
I love the new aging wheels alike channel, subscribed
Thanks man! That's very flattering! Rob is one of my personal heros. I hope to grow the channel enough to maybe collab with him eventually.

@wuiss__._Thank you for the kind words. That really warms my heart. ❤️
Wonderful another upload. Thank you Mr Garage
That one missed fastener at the hatch got me.
I noticed that in the edit too, all the clips are there, that panel is just warped.
I did a Jeep XJ headliner the same way, rainbow striped fleece and 3M spray glue. Thanks to the lack of sunroof I was able to do it without actually removing it from the car!
The beetle looks so much better, especially the front/rear badges 👍🏻

The CEO of Twonger?
In MY little 'ol comment section?!?!
I think the bug could use a Nuggetopolis sticker.

3:55 Volkswagen doesn’t like going much into that history either

I don't know why always loved this gen of beetle, and as a taller guy, these things are actually incredibly roomy!
I'm an ALH JettaWagon owner who inherited a Volvo 740. I'm in SE PA. Love the content! Tx!
13:52 reminds me of aging wheels :D
Yeah, he's been copying my style since 2014.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 :D
Happy Mary ding dong Bean man!! 🙏❤💪
This video made me realise how much I miss my 2001 2lt petrol beetle, drive it to Scotland once and it never missed a beat
This video made my miss my ALH Golf even more. That car was a tank. The 1.9L TDI is the most durable motor I've ever seen. Nice save! Subbed.
Great Video Sir! Keep up the good work!

@9:13 What really needs a backup camera? It is a comfort feature just like a GPS sat nav which you actually don't need, either.
Apparently even one in the US needs one since 2013.
I never liked the beetle before but I love your work on it and I love your video
keep it up 👍
You are a perfect presentation talking super funny youtuber👍
I honestly wasn't the biggest fan either until I had one. Thank you for the kind words!
Id love to see if that faded yellow will buff. I think it might
It won't I have tried :( it's the base coat that fades, not the clear.
@ ah thats a bummer. Sounds like a food ole case of delaminating
Great video! I will stick to this channel for sure.
Again, with the sound effects and visuals. Top notch. Makes me chuckle. Thanks.
24:06 They aren't temp sensors but heating elements (like glow plugs) to heat up the water going into the heater core
Love these videos.
Another great video!!
Thank you for that :D 27:44 .... And merry christmas :)
Great vid. I’m concerned the sandals may be a safety hazard, best to go barefoot
you are now a moon roof professional

You can only obtain this kind of humor by huffing adhesive aerosols
Good video!

Idk why I assumed they were sensors, I'm used to older stuff. Good to know!

OEM always knows best.
The 1.9tdi is bliss, hope she does you well. How did you damage your back?
No big injury, just degenerative disc and bad luck:/

When you say fleece, it's really just fleece, it's not backed with foam?
Yup, just regular fleece from the craft store.

Nice Bug...
That's 3m vhb tape. All at once wonderful and awful depending on whether you want something stuck together or taken apart.
how did you fix the rust holes?
0:20 that’s considered totaled????
Yeah, at least in the US, pretty much any unibody damage is a write-off.
Bets engine 1.9 - my brothers caddy is on 273,000 miles
As soon as you drove in the 2nd big and mentioned the first one is in worse condition(rust) than the latter…

Are you going to sell the 740 wagon??
