@@SwedishMeattball Good point. I have one too. I did the R100 mod. I mean, I like it. The cleans are actually really good. The high gain stuff is not bad. If you put a TS9 or overdrive in front, you can get very useable tones.

This amp is so similar to the XXX as well as the 6505 (namely the Plus 112), in reality. It was voiced a bit deeper though, and it has only four gain stages in the preamp. However, it has a cathodyne phase inverter, which allows for a 5th gain stage to be placed right before the PI. This is one of the tricks of the VK... as to why you can get so much gain out of it.
Anyhow, the VK is a great amp, imo... even stock. I think it becomes even greater when you perform a few simple mods on it. There’s a ton of mods documented for this thing.
As for the mods that are easy and improve the amp significantly, there are a few. The easiest one to do is the “R100” mod. This disengages the “noise gate” circuit and cleans up the tone quite a bit. You can either just remove it completely or jump the resistor to remove it from the circuit. You can also bridge or remove one of the diodes next to the resistor, and this will clean things up a bit more as well. The two diodes and the resistor make up the circuit.
The next mod I would do is I would change the tone stack to have a 47k slope resistor (R4) and change the treble cap (C2) on the tone stack to be 470p as opposed to 270p. This is part of the “Mesa Mod” that is popular with this amp. You could also mod the cold clipper portion of the circuit, which is part of said “Mesa Mod,” but this will lower the gain a bit. Just depends on taste. I’ve tried 37k (Soldano), 10k (Marshall), and 4.7k (grid clip). All are nice in their own ways. Just know the higher you go, the “lower” the gain will be.
Another nice mod is to remove the Texture knob... which involves just removing that knob and board and then taking C1 off of the Texture board and then soldering it between pin 8 of the phase inverter and C144.

+1 to this. I only got partway through modding my vk100 before an unexpected move sent it to storage where its been ever since. I got as far as replacing resistors with pots and adding varicaps so i could experiment with the mesa/soldano "spectrum" and some of the tones i got with my cab were quite on par with posh gear I'd borrowed prior.
My intention was always to find values i liked the best and then replace pots with fixed values etc for reliability, but i honestly considered leaving the "added knobs" functionality as there were a few sounds i liked, not just one. (I believe the amp cost me a dollar per watt thanks to bad internet reviews, so I had no compunction drilling holes in the chassis).
If you're a tinkerer, this amp could very well be the perfect project: no resale to ruin, scope to find an awesome sound. 9/10, would butcher again ;)

Certainly underrated and prob stacks up well against many of those UA-cam hyped lunchbox amps. At often half or a quarter of the price.

I think I had Digitech Bad Monkey as boost and I was very happy to play with it. As a fan of the old Crate Blue Voodoo, I bought one of these on a lark about 7 years ago. I still have it. To me, it's very similar to those old BV heads in many ways. But I really do love this head, which I currently have connected to a 4X12 cab with Celestion G12M-65s in it. It rips. Period. I run just the head distortion most of the time, but I also have an old-school TS-9 that I use to drive it over the edge. I know, not these are not things most guys use nowadays. But its what I play and I love it. Old-school thrash tone at its finest!

6:37 for anyone curious about how to fix the channel switching delay on this amp, all you have to do is remove the “C124” capacitor. It’s connected to the channel switching relay with the intent of alleviating any pop that might occur during channel switching, but it’s not necessary at all. Without the capacitor there, there isn’t a noticeable pop when switching channels.

I had a Valveking a while back that I got for really cheap, and actually really liked it especially considering the price as it's a full 100W tube amp. Makes a great backup/touring amp that you don't have to worry about banging up and such. I did end up selling it but not because I didn't like it, I just didn't really need it at the time.

Dude. I bought a 50W combo used for $150 bucke... freaking steal. I like playing a wide array of styles, but also wanted to make sure it could do high gain. This amp is a sleeper. Gain at 6 and boost the front end with an OD or clean boost - freaking rips. Reverb ain't my favorite reverb but it is a true analog spring reverb. It doesn't seem as obnoxious as in this video. Could be different generations. I don't think I've ever set it past five... seems like you died it there.

I third this, jumping the fx loop with a quality connector cable makes a big difference. That plus trying some different tubes in V1/V2 slots turn this amp into something that punches way above it's price point, maybe an MXR 10-band if you're feeling saucy. Connecting the send and return engages the loop buffer and boosts the signal going into the power section. It definitely improves the sound. That combined with a good boost and some high output pups, and this thing is gold. It's not like a 5150, it's like a jcm800... that's why it has a fizzier kind of high gain sound which I prefer.

The 50 Watt combo version of this was my first tube amp. It sounded pretty good, but I got bored of the stock sound pretty quickly, so I had it modified into a more Marshall-like, “classic rock to 80s metal” voicing by a local amp tech.
I remember the reverb being just as obnoxious and the clean channel just as boxy and clanky on mine as the one on yours. The reverb tank also rattled like crazy during every drive to a gig or a band practice. It had many quirks like that.

After getting one myself, I learned very quickly that Peavey has the power tubes biased a bit too cold, only about 40-45% of max dissipation. If you want to make it sound a bit tighter, I highly recommend putting in adjustable bias, or changing the bias voltage reference resistor to a lower value, so the power tubes will bias up a little hotter. I recommend 55-60% of max dissipation. It took some of the "fuzzy" out of the highs, and the "flubbery" out of the lows and tightens it up a bit, takes some of the "harshness" out of it. For the money, with proper biasing on the power tubes, it's really not a bad amp at all.

I owned several valvekings and what really helped was running a eq pedal..like a boss ge 7 in the effect loop to really have better control of the frequencies.. That gain button really acts as an overdrive.. So I don't really see any reason to put an extra overdrive in the front.. Because once that button is in you can't even really crank the gain even past noon.. it gets to out of control of loud volumes.. And it's tight enough on its own in my personal opinion..the tone stack is passive. You can bring out some pretty intense tones playing with a looped eq..especially pulling up a bit in the upper mids to get some sizzle.
Also try pulling a little down around 200 to 300 hz to clean up the bottom end just a bit..A little goes a long way at high volume...The funny thing is I prefer The completely solid state Peavey Supreme over everything by Peavey I have tried..It is absolutely stunning..And sounds killer at any volume.

This was the first valve amp I owned, got it for 500€ new back then. It performed ok but it never really grew on me. A bit to dark and muddy. Reading the comments with people saying you have to mod it or put some OD or distortion before it to sound good support my lukewarm memories of it.
We rented a rehearsal room from another band back then and I always wondered why I didn't manage to sound as good as them. The first time they let me play their amps (Engl E650 100 Watt Ritchie Blackmoore) I was blown away! Way better sound and feel/response. I saved up, sold the VK and bought my very own E650.
Not only did I enjoy playing much more, but I constantly got great comments about my tone since then.
Sold my beloved E650 a while ago, because it was just to cumbersome to lug around constantly. Got an E606 Powerball SE and am extremely happy, because it can sound like the E650 but is way smaller, lighter and has great new features like an IR loader or direct out.
Still like to think back to the VK from time to time though, because it was a time of great changes in my life back when I owned it. All in all I think the Bandit is the better amp from Peavy of that era, because it was even cheaper, more versatile, sounded better and the combo was still lighter then the VK 100 Watt head.

I have the 112 combo version, after a speaker upgrade it's a keeper.
I say that not using the reverb onboard very much though.

The VK gets overlooked because of the other Peavey amps, Ultra and 5150 amps have so much gain compared, but it does the job!

The dirt channel is ok for rock and blues with the right speaker(I've had the 112 combo for years) but I use it as a dead ass dry clean slate pedal platform ...it's got a good bare bones clean channel that can be sculpted to whatever you like with pedals...that's how I use it anyway with excellent results...I don't ever intend on selling it.

This amp is peavys best kept seceret for affordable metal amps. I’m not sure how the new mark 2 fairs like if it’s made in China now or if it has clone components like the the 5150/6505.
I have active high gain pickups so i actully don’t use any OD I just use the on board boost with a cable in the loop send and return to open the pre amp, the cab speakers is a little cold sounding tho so if you get say a Harley Benton cab with the v30s for 200$ your all set. It’s also worth it to put the presence to 10 then the resonance to 1, my eq is highs -8 mids -5 and bass- 6, gives me that 2010 metalcore sound

With its onboard boost, it does sit in the same ballpark as a 5150, and if people want other options, an external boost and EQ are always on the table. Many have an assortment of pedals to shape their tones anyway, making this a great and very cheap high gain amp on its own, but especially when paired with a few inexpensive pedals.

      >5150
No, where are you getting this?
Tonally, it's way closer to a Laney or Marshall.
A 5150 is basically interchangeable with a Recto, where does anyone hear a "recto" with this?

I bet it sounds really good when the high frequency buzz gets eq outed a bit. Remember this amp being shit on in forums back when it was sold lol so sounds better than expected for sure. Wondering how they made that reverb and thought "yep that sounds fine" though.

Also like a month before that we were downtown begging for $ to pay for studio time and Jaime and either you or Kyle walked up and gave us your demo on a burned CD. You guys were always really cool. Everytime we played with you guys, y'all always showed up and hyped up the crowd even though we didn't know what we were doing. It was cool as a young musician to have such positive energy from way more proficient musicians.
Anyways, I haven't thought about that for a long time and just felt like sharing

I'd say the only downside of the Peavey VK100 is the EQ itself. It's somewhat unpredictable & has some strange resonances at more extreme settings.
I've found that swapping in some higher quality preamp tubes helps this, but they are pretty much tanks as far as amps go!

I tried a VKMH once and I was super at how much I liked it, it had more than enough gain especially with a boost or overdrive, I wondered how much gain the 6505MH had if the VK had so much, but I guess the VK is more vintage voiced high gain. I sorta like all the VK demos I’ve heard and they are cheap. I think a person could do a lot worse than a VK .
I think Kyle Bull has a demo of a modded VK .
He was able to get his tone out of it and I think Taylor pretty much got his tone out of the VK it in this video.
Come to think of it I have to add Taylor to my list of You Tube guitarist who get “their” sound out of just about any gear they demo, Ola, Euge, KB , and Taylor know how to dial their tone in .

  • @mccloud273
    @mccloud273 Рік тому

If you turned the reverb on that amp into a pedal and renamed it to something like the "Penis Shitverb" Ola would probably make a fun video with it
I like how the gain switch tightens up the low end a bit, unless that's just my headphones. I'm not a huge fan of having a lot of muddy bass, but I know it's a staple in Death Metal (if I'm remembering right), which is a forte you excel at!
Also when's that IR pack coming? I know I bring up a lot of things out of nowhere, but I am curious about your projects that may currently be on the backburner. Great video, hope you're doing well!
