Great lesson! My buddy John McDonald always told me. If you learn slide, learn it in standard tuning. It took me a year to learn, but I rarely go into other tunings now. Keep up the good work!
Great tutorial! I started playing in bands in the seventies, didn’t have two guitars and thought learning open tunings would be hard, so figured out done somebody wrong in standard (though a clumsy “fingering” I figured out later better places to get those notes) and it sounded pretty good. Later on worked on slide, open tunings, and then trying again on standard seemed harder. Also I think I lost my muting unwanted string ability somewhere, got sloppy. Working on it again, it’s hard but I’m going to make that leap to not using a pick. Your video was “instrumental” in me deciding, you did a great job, no slop or unwanted notes, straightforward instruction, and not a lot of wasted time or words at all. Excellent job! Thanks for that!
I am SO GLAD I FOUND YOU!!! Great stuff! I'm a drummer (hobby level) with a serious love of guitars. I've always enjoyed tinkering, have built & hotrodded a couple of decent monsters. I've learned a few chords ever 10 years or so, & dabble in slide, too. Your video makes more sense than most anything else I've watched or attempted. I think I can do this! Gonna check out all your stuff. Huge Gov't Mule, WH, Allmans fan! (I used to play this song on drums with some boys. Always loved it, especially the slide!)
Great playing. I think the tone of the amp your using is a huge part of getting the long sustain on the slide. Nobody ever explains that part of the slide formula. So I was wondering what is your rig set up?
Hey there! Thanks so much for the compliment. When I made this video, I recorded all guitar tones using the IK Multimedia Amplitube software using a “Plexi” setting. Just tried to dial it in as well as I could using my ear. I had to make the videos while my little ones slept, so amp emulation software was the way to go. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! No noise gate; I kind of grew up with no money, so I try to make the most out of what I have using the hands for stuff like this. Thanks for watching!
Hello! Thank you for your comment. In this video, I’m actually using a Plexi-type of sound from the Amplitube software. For sustain, I’d say that the biggest factor is that I keep my guitar’s action up pretty high. It makes standard playing a tougher affair, but I grew up with only one guitar and have used high action for about 30 years.
Great lesson. Love the standard tuning.

Excellent Job for in Standard Tuning.
Jaw dropping!! Never thought it’d be possible in open tuning, great lesson, thanks!
Just now seeing this, for some reason. Thanks so much!!
Neither did I. I'm really surprised.

butterfly bleu (live) tiene un buen slide parecido al tuyo
Hey dude I did a vid on Dickey's parts. You should check it out and see how it sounds. You done awesome at it. It's one of my favorite songs as well.
Are you using a noise gate to keep all the fret noise in check outside of hand muting techniques?
Hey there! No noise gate; I kind of grew up with no money, so I try to make the most out of what I have using the hands for stuff like this. Thanks for watching!
Nice. What are you using for the sound and sustain? Thanks.
