If you are away from the vice for more than a couple of weeks a review and practice of skills like whip finish. Even just six times on a hook will refresh your muscle memory. Same with any material or technique that you use infrequently. Say it’s upwinged drys. Fore you start just set up a hook with a bed of thread a few practice attempts before starting a batch will save time in the long run.
The whip finish is the best way to secure the thread. It is not only secure. It is reliable and repeatable. Consistency is a major part of quality control. Twelve flys identical in every way except for size and shape of head. Is simply not acceptable. A half hitch is just being lazy.
