just wanna say that you've got some perfect tutorials and you're amazing at explaining everything. thanks for doing what you do....this stuff has got me back into playing my guitar again
Yeah the song is amazing! Definitely one of my favourites from Coldplay, and one that I listen to and play a lot on my guitar. Very glad to hear you enjoyed the lesson btw, it lets me know I'm doing a good job (,")
Hey man, I'm glad you're finding the lessons helpful. I don't normally do requests, but Proof is a really cool song and I don't think there are any tutorials for it on UA-cam, so I'll make that my next Coldplay lesson. The chords are pretty straight forward (only 4 to play the whole song) but the tuning is quite obscure so that's the only tricky part. I'll give you a shout when it's up, hopefully by mid next week (,")
Awesome tutorial, man. I love being able to play this song, now! Thank you. I learned it the way you teach it, but I wasn't comfortable with wrapping my thumb around. I play those chords as bar chords instead. For those of you who are having a hard time with the thumb, I recommend it. It works and sounds the same to me :)
Got to say this is one the most instructional and well done videos I have seen. I've been trying to learn the song for years, and every time I feel like coming back to i always come back to this video and I finally got it down! Appreciate it man.
If your guitar has a thicker neck or you simply can't get your thumb around, tune your G up 2 frets to match the 2 position and then play the second fret on the second chord for the verse piece
Awesome! Thanks for the tutorial, I checked some of your other stuff and it's all very useful and well explained, I subbed and liked some of the videos I watched :)
Cheers mate, great song great video best tutorial. For anyone who's string snapped during detuning it's best to tune down a bit before up and make sure the bridge is free from obstruction or sticky as that's what causes the string to snap and they can be lethal take it from me lol
+Noskeal You're very welcome Noskeal. It's a pretty tricky song so I had to deliver the lesson in an organised way. I often play it without changing the tuning & it still sounds ok, the open E on top is just an octave of the route so no dissonance to worry about. Thanks again for stopping by (,")
+FundamentalGuitar Yea, this is really tricky haha, my thumb is like dying right now. But this is a good challenge. English is not my native language, so i'm not really sure about your following sentence: "the open E on top is just an octave of the route so no dissonance to worry about." Do it mean that the "real" tunning that coldplay use is Open E? Thanks a lot :)
I love your tutorials, I love the songs and I've been subscribed for many years. It's definitely time to sign up for your Patreon. Thanks for your lovely tutorials Dean.
Thank you for supporting the channel - The Patreon is growing and has quite a few benefits included - bonus breakdown vids via the Discord server, and free lesson giveaways.
Thanks for another great lesson, added this and Sparks to my Coldplay playlist for guitar playing, but I was wondering and just making a suggestion, would it be possible for you to do a lesson on Proof by Coldplay? Thanks!
+Teddy Sundin It's a technique that requires an awkward hand postion so not suited to all players. In fact the great BB King laughed when Clapton gave him an acoustic & asked him to play rhythm while on tour, BB laughed and said "I don't do chords". Moral of the story, even the greats have areas that they aren't good at!
I want to take the time and say that this was a very good tutorial indeed ! Very informative and we all see instantly you know what you're talking about. Thank you @FundamentalGuitar for this tutorial !
Hey Dino, Great video, you are easily the best teacher on youtube! quick q, what guitar is that? and Which guitar do you recommend for an intermediate guitar player? Thanks and keep up the great work! Tots
Thanks for the positive feedback T - I'm trying my best to be a good teacher so that's great to hear! The guitar I'm playing is a Seagull Coastline S6, hand crafted from Canada. Sounds lovely & very easy to play! I don't think I can recommend a specific make/model, but when I bought my 3rd guitar I looked for the following features: spruce top, built-in tuner, cutaway, electro acoustic... The sound though was most important so you have to play different models and you'll know what is good. The price generally increases with the quality so compare different ranges i.e. £150 vs £350 vs £600+ Hope this is useful (,")
The use of the thumb is tricky but manageable. The fact that you’re doing it on a Seagull is really impressive. I had one but sold it because the neck was too wide for me.
Yeah the Seagull is definitely not the best choice for thumb over techniques - if I could go back in time I probably would have chose a Taylor,. Fortunately my hands were big/strong enough to manage, so I stuck with the gull. What guitar did you replace yours with?
@@DefinitelyDean Taylor 114ce. Decent guitar and easier to play. Looks nice and has a bright sound. I actually preferred the seagull sound. There’s always a trade off. I think I’m going to look into a Martin later on.
@@karmatologist That's a nice model 👌 ...there's definitely a trade-off! Having both would be a great solution, but the Taylor's are so expensive. I looked at a few Martin's back I'm the day but I always preferred the Taylor's. Now things have changed and I play the strat 95% of the time - lol
I am currently mashing up melody, base, harmonics, and the chords (Thanks For the tutorial!) and make it into a whole song (Sparks by Coldplay). I am thinking about doing it again for this song after I am finished. BTW I will mention you in the comment for the chord tutorial! xD
This was an excellent lesson, thank you. This is going to keep me busy for awhile. The only thing I would like to see is you play the whole song at the end of the video
Glad it was helpful. The vid is already nearly 15 minutes so not practical to play through at the end. The song structure/arrangement is in the description though so play along with that and you should be fine (,")
Nice, thank you! I was struggling with the exact rythm pattern, well you gotta feel it right. Listening to you with earpads and trying to find the rythm - still strugglin hehe.
andrew zuniga cheers bro, much appreciated. I learnt all these songs after receiving a Coldplay songbook as a birthday present. I never had any formal training or lessons but with a lot of determination & patience I succeeded in learning & understanding how to play the songs. I’m glad to be able to help others via an audio visual medium, as these songs had a tremendous impact on my musical journey.
i'm really having trouble holdin the E string with my thumb... i think my guitar neck it's slightly wider than yousr and that would be the problem. can you tell me, if you don't mind, the width of your first fret? mine is 3.8 cm. i'm really curious, maybe it's only my thumb that needs some more practice, thank you !
I'm playing a Seagull S6 Coastline - really nice hand-made guitar from Canada! The strings are D'Addario EJ16's. Seagull's are not as popular at the Taylor or Martin acoustics but the sound & playability are top notch.
I dont think this song is as popular as some of the others, and it's probably one of their more challenging ones to play on guitar. Over time the views should creep up! How did you get on with learning this one?
If you're new to guitar then this might not be the best song to try n' play. It's quite a tough one so maybe try something more straightforward like 'Yellow'
hey man is there any way to adapt these to standard tuning? I love these songs but I'm just a beginner and it's much easier to keep my guitar tuned to standard to practice what I do know
For this song you can get away with playing in standard tuning, but the other Coldplay ones just won't sound right. To try and make an easy version with the capo won't really work either, as the chords are all weird & unusual.
Such a pretty chord structure. I’m pretty sure I could nail this, but vocally it’s hard to get anywhere near Chris Martins vocal. I sound like a strangled cat 🐱 thanks for the video
You dont explain where the middle finger is supposed to go in the f minor chord and you say index finger on first string second fret but the index finger seems to be on the third string
+Lemon Grab Not 100% necessary. I often play it in standard tuning, but if you want the exact sound from the recording then the option is there i guess.

@@333_studios It is an uneducated statement to say that guitar is easy to master, I don't know about snowboarding but I have played guitar for quite some time now and I can tell you that it is just like most other skills very hard to master and very few have done so. This is the BEST Coldplay song imo
