I'm looking to do basically the same thing, but I'll likely pour a slab and screen it in. My question for you is about debris falling through the deck boards. Are you experiencing any issues related to this? Any comments on that now that you've lived with this for a while? I have large oaks over my deck so they drop a lot of "stuff" that I'll have to consider. I don't want it clogging up between the deck boards and soffit ceiling. (I'm thinking of stapling high strength screen material directly under the deck boards between each joist to minimize this.) Oh, also, how is the black waterproofing material integrated in this system? Is it just right above the soffit pieces?
there are so many tutorials on how to build something like this and so few tutorials on how to clean/maintain it! i bought a house with this and it's full of leaves and mosquitos like to breed in the water that pools up. if anyone knows how to clean it, i would love to see it! ty
What spacing were your deck joists? 12 or 16 on center? I see that the soffit material is 12. Based on your description I assume your spacing was 12 to be able to use the 2x4s in the way you did? Thanks and looks great
Hey Ryan. Deck joists were 12 inches apart. In order to put the soffit material up, you need to put planks across the joists. Don’t forget to pitch them to make sure the water doesn’t either sit there or run back to house. You want the pitch enough for the water to travel into the gutter away from the house.
Thank you. No, not at all. It’s been up for several years now and looks good as new. Remember this is soffit material used for roof. It’s cheap and works great.
Sorry for late reply. You need to make sure you pitch it so that water runs away from house. In order to do that I ripped some 2x4 on a diagonal creating pitch and tying them to joists. Then I added 1x2 across the span of the deck ever 16 inches. This is what I attached the soffit to. Let me know if that’s not clear, I will try to explain better.
What is the name of that roll of black material you used for the outer portion of the deck? My deck is very similar and I'd like to see if it will work for me, too.
Hi. Are you referring to the material used to guide the water? Drainage? Goberco Under Deck Drainage System -Z/50/16- 50' Long Roll, for 16'' Joist Spacing, 30 Mil Thick Black Trough, Create Dry Below Deck Storage www.amazon.com/dp/B00STPXKLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_YBP1WFFKA9B7DCCS3X4Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Great question. The junction box is actually higher on the rafter. I added a 2x6 in between the rafters. And brought just the cable down. I added lots of silicone to the screws and wire hole.
Nice job. I want to do this. I'm concerned with leaves and other debris that get caught between the deck boards. When using a leaf blower in the fall do the leaves and helicopter seeds etc. Flush through and out your under deck gutter?
Hi, yes, the little that make it through the seams will flow right through the gutter system. It’s not like a roof where it’s completely open. Only a limited amount of debris get through. We’ve had several large rain events and have enjoyed our time while staying dry. One of my most favorite projects.
Looks awesome! What did you use for screws to hold this up? We have the exact same deck and i am going to do this. I had no idea how to waterproof that front overhang, until this video. Thank you!
Totally awesome project! Could you let me know what kind of trims you used for the edges?

Question that curtain on the balcony is very nice it doesn’t get wet when it rains
Question do you have any problem with it sagging? How far apart did you attach the soffit… Kinda confused on how you did this.

Question
Did you use j channel or f channel to install the soffit on the celling porch.
How do you make sure the lights don’t get wet? Does the water go straight through the deck and onto the vinyl?

Looks great . On very hot days does the vinyl bubble or warp at all … I’m deciding between vinyl or aluminum

Thank you for the reply !
Looks amazing! How did you secure the soffit material to the joists? I don’t see any screws or nails?
Thanks!

Hey how did you ensure the lighting fixtures didn’t get the wet? Did you just use a junction box?

Any issues with leaking?
