Light is very important in art - different degrees of illumination can radically change the appearance of the same object or space. There are many examples when lighting effects act as a key means of expressiveness of a work.
In Russia in the 19th century, a table lighting fixture called “miracle” gained particular popularity. The lamp consisted of a base with a stand for candles and an adjustable translucent screen. The oscillating flame of the candle illuminated the screen, and the picture “came to life” on it. In real time, a miracle was happening.
Miracles were often used as a table lamp for a desk. In the collection of the Museum "Collection" there is an item from the 1830s, decorated with figures of dancing peasants - a Desk set with figures of dancing peasants, with a lamp-miracle.
This item is a rare example of a “combination” of a writing instrument, a miracle lamp and a sculptural composition.
Miracles, unlike most lighting fixtures, were not made for a specific interior. The compactness of the product, combined with the whimsical light play, ensured the demand for the miracle lamp throughout the 19th century. Mobility, valued in the era of romanticism, subdued light, important for the burgher comfort of Biedermeier, and decorative motifs of bygone styles, reproduced within the framework of the "historicism" direction, for a long time guaranteed a significant place for miracles in the interiors of living rooms, bedrooms and offices.
