One of my favorite parts of this game is all the different characters you race against. There's a menu full of little bios for every single racer and their backstory, and once you beat them you even get a little blurb explaining their driving style. And this game *does* give each racer their own unique AI- after having trouble getting past one of the Rolling Guys I noticed in his bio that I wasn't crazy, he actually was trying to block me off! Granted, as this video demonstrates the AI is still pretty dumb, but I feel like that just sums up TXR as a whole. There's a lot of jank, the campaign can be pretty grindy, and the hardest races rely almost exclusively on luck, but it's still a really charming experience that you can't find anywhere else even in its time. Glad to see this game popping up again! I'd love to see more, a sequel video focused on hunting down the wanderers might be fun. They're another part of this game's odd charm with the utterly demented requirements for finding some of them, especially Coffee X3.
I agree, I don't think there's anything which comes close. Its shortcomings are obvious, but there are a lot of unique elements to be rescued here. One can wish people make games taking a few clues from TXR.

The "peculiar body kit" of Red Devil is actually supposed to look like the Zaku II, a robot from the Gundam series. In red, it specifically resembles the villain Char's personal Zaku, which was also red, and was said to be three times faster than a normal Zaku.
Red Devil himself is usually a reference to that character (nicknamed the Red Comet). If you buy that Skyline, the car will have its model code as "MS-06S" instead of "BNR34" (MS-06S is the Zaku II's model number)

Wanderers are an absolute nightmare, specially on 3. The requirements can be absurd at times and the fact the currency system is broken in NTSC doesn't help at all!
