Marko "Marco" Hietala is true pioneer of Finnish Heavy Metal, he started band with his brother Zachary beginning of 80's called Purgatory what later became Tarot, he is "was" very much involved everything that happened in Finnish and lots of European metal music since. Man is real beast.
This is true. The European metal scene (especially the symphonic side) is a bit like the Royal Houses of Europe: there's a lot of inbreeding, as in many members of different bands (like Marco) have worked, collaborated, performed and associated with each other at least once in the past.
This is why people are so excited for you to get to Ghost River and Romanticide, because of how great Marko is in them 😅

Adding my vote for Ghost River, Romanticide, and then for a twist, Yours is an Empty Hope from Wembly 2015. Both Marco and Floor singing, with a showcase of how vocally gifted Floor is. That woman is a Viking Goddess who can do ANYTHING.

Nightwish have been my absolute favourite band along with another band somewhat similar called Epica (They are slightly heavier and you NEED to check them out too) and they do not have ANY songs that I dislike or skip over, period. Guys I’m not a metal fan in any way shape or form and there’s not a single track from Wacken 13 that I don’t love. Ok it took me awhile to get into the heavier stuff but that’s only due to the fact I’ve never been into that. You really have just scratched the surface and will not be disappointed

Hi guys - finally, I've been waiting for you to react to NW more!! I kept checking if you uploaded more already. Not knowing anything about metal at all before - I still couldn't name a single Metallica song - NW has really blown me away. That's what they do! And not just because its fun to watch other people react to NW, but there's something very healing in these depressing times in which I've struggled a lot with loneliness etc (I had to move back from Myanmar, country next to Thailand, where I lived and worked for 4 years and now I'm 'stuck' living with my parents due to covid) to see other people genuinely fall in love with their music. Even with songs I wasn't as familiar with as I did follow the recommendations out there. Keep up the good work, please upload as much asap as it really brings so much joy, a sense of 'togetherness', and an escape from reality.
My favourite songs btw are, besides storytime, 7 days to the wolves, weak fantasy, the poet and the pendulum (you NEED to research beforehand), the greatest show on earth (tampere show), and elvenjig/elvenpath as it's just so much fun! They can't do anything wrong really, even when I tend to listen to some songs less you can't but be amazed by their musicianship. When possible, I'd advise you to look up the lyrics as well as that brings even more appreciation.
Tuomas also has a band called Auri with Troy (you haven't seen him yet but will) and his wife.. Add the song Night 13 to your list as well :-).

Nightwish have quite many songs where Floor and Marko sings together and it is really joy too see/heard them together on these live performances.
Also there are some songs where Marko is leading vocalist and Floor takes care back vocals.

Love the fact you’re working your way thru Wacken. Just a bit of a suggestion, skip to Buenos Aires 2019 for “I want my Tears Back”. Wacken version is great, probably better audio, but Buenos has more crowd interaction. If already done ignore and continue on.

Start with Consign to Oblivion, live in Zenith, Paris or anything from there "Retrospect" concert with full (70 people) Orkestra and Choir. Just awesome...

"The Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" from Buenos Aires is a fantastic next step in order to experience their heavier and especially their faster side. And Marco becomes vocally Hannibal Lecter.
🤔 You want heavier? Try the band Epica and the live songs, the essence of silence, consign to oblivion, Kingdom of heaven. Epica is a Dutch band the singer Simone Simons and Floor are friends there's even a performance with the two of them together ( Sancta Terra and in the same show they also do Stabat Matar from Pergolesi!). Welcome to the phenomenon that is the genre of Symphonic metal and welcome to the Nightwish Army!!
This was the Wacken Open Air Festival Concert back in 2013, and there were over 82,000 people at this concert. the current singer is from the Netherlands, and a majority of the band members are from Finland, although the woodwinds player is from England. They released their first album in 1996.
SO WHAT STYLE OF MUSIC ACTUALLY IS BAND NIGHTWISH?
Nightwish is actually one of the groups credited with the CREATION of the Metal Sub-genre of Symphonic Metal (according to Wikipedia!). Symphonic Metal in general only borrows the hard driving double kick drums, and the hard grungy style guitars and bass from Metal. However, in SYMPHONIC METAL the guitar is not the primary focal point, it is in fact the keyboards and their movie-scorish sounding orchestral sound. The keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen (first name pronounced as Too-oh-mas) is the composer of all of the music arrangements and is the leader of the group. He is a personal huge lover of movie scores, which is where a lot of the movie-scorish style sound of the keyboards comes from (which is the primary focal point of ALL of Nightwish’s music instrumentally). In Symphonic Metal 90-95% of all Symphonic Metal bands are all female fronted. Currently only Kamelot, Serenity, and a hand full of other Symphonic Metal bands even have male singers, and they are normally referred to as Symphonic Power Metal. The female fronted bands are the ones usually referred to over in Europe as ‘Symphonic Metal’. The most popular Symphonic Metal bands are Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, and Kamelot. When Symphonic Metal first started the female lead singers used an operatic style of singing, but as the Genre has evolved over the last 20+ years in the UK since Nightwish came long in 1996, they have adopted more of a contemporary style of singing like Floor uses currently.
Floor Jansen is the 3rd and current Lead Singer since Nightwish released its first album in 1996, and she is from the Netherlands. Keep in mind when Floor did the Wacken Open Air in 2013 concert, she had not been with Nightwish for very long, she was actually a FILL-IN for this particular tour. Nightwish was in the middle of the Imaginearum World Tour when they parted ways with their SECOND Lead Singer Anette Olzen (from Sweden), and Tuomas (pronounced as Too-oh-mas) called Floor and asked her if she could learn their entire set list in 48 hours and then fill-in for them for the rest of the tour. Within the next few short months, the band posted their first Official Live Performance video since they fired their first lead singer Tarja Turunen at the end of November 2005. During Anette's entire tenure with the band, Nightwish did not post ONE single solitary live performance video on their official UA-cam channel. Hmmm? Curious?
At the end of this Imaginearum World Tour (just a few months later!), (As Floor tells the story in an interview) the Band pulled both Floor Jansen and Troy Donokley aside and asked them to be official members of the band. Floor said both her and Troy both had tears in their eyes. Troy had been a guest musician with the band on such official videos like The Islander, but never an official member of the band. The rest as they say ... is history.

• Emppu Vuorinen - All guitars (been with the band since its inception) - (His name is pronounced Ehm-poo)

• Troy Donockley - uilleann pipes, tin whistle, low whistle, guitars, bouzouki, bodhrán, backing vocals
• Floor Jansen - lead vocals (Floor is Nightwish current and THIRD Lead Singer)
• Kai Hahto - drums (NOT APART OF THE BAND YET WHEN THE WACKEN 2013 CONCERT WAS FILMED - Kai was hand picked by the groups original drummer Jukka Nevalainen to replace him when he had to stepped down for medical reasons listed below. Kai is a personal friend of Jukka’s, as well as was Jukka's drum teacher)
FORMER BAND MEMBERS SEEN IN THIS CONCERT AT THE WACKEN OPEN AIR FESTIVAL FROM THE YEAR 2013:
• Jukka Nevalainen - drums ( original drummer from 1997-2014 and is who you see playing drums in the Wacken Open Air Festival Show from 2013. He had to step down for severe medial reasons, and handpicked his replacement. Jukka nearly died from a period of 2 straight years of severe insomnia, and had to be hospitalized because of it. Even though he stepped down as drummer, according to Toumas, he is the CEO of the Nightwish Corporation now. So he is still very much a part of Nightwish.)

• Tarja Turunen - vocals (Nightwish FIRST Singer for the first 10 years of Nightwish existence from 1996-2005)

These are some songs I would recommend to listening to:
1. Poet And The Pendulum - This is one of the corner stone songs for this band. I would RESEARCH THIS SONG BEFORE REACTING TO IT. I would also not do this one right away, I would build up to this and get a few Nightwish songs under your belt before doing it. As stated above Floor Jansen is their THIRD Singer. Their first singer sang entirely in the operatic style and was Nightwish Singer for TEN YEARS. Her last concert was THE END OF AN ERA DVD concert filmed the end of October of 2005. Immediately after the conclusion of the END OF AN ERA concert Tarja received a letter called "The Open Letter" from the band telling her they were parting ways with her. Poet And the Pendulum is about the emotional heart wrenching experience of events that lead up to that decision, and the backlash from fans after ward. So this song is extremely INTENSELY emotional. Doing your research into this before hand will help you understand why the song is so emotional and why it was written in 5 acts like it was.

2. Greatest Show On Earth - I would RESEARCH THIS SONG BEFORE REACTING TO IT. I would also not do this one right away, I would build up to this and get a few Nightwish songs under your belt before doing it. This song is about the creation of the universe, the big bang, and evolution. Be ready because this is a 20 min thrill ride that only feels like 3 or 4 minutes long. Also, I think its a good idea to look for the Tampere Finland show because of a surprise during the performance I dont want to ruin for you and it has lyrics so you can follow along. Look for the one with Lyrics and Fireworks both.

3. Ever Dream - my absolute all-time favorite Nightwish song. The most high energy song they’ve ever done in my opinion. The Wacken 2013 concert is your best introduction into this one.

5. Yours Is An Empty Hope - Maybe do this one from the Tampere Finland Show off of the Vehicle of Spirit DVD because Floors back ground vocals behind Marko on the chorus is amazing. Be prepared because behind Marcos vocals on the chorus, is Floor growling. You read it correctly, yes she really CAN do everything!!.

6. I Want My Tears Back - You will get to see another member of Nightwish Troy Donokley who is their multi-instrument band member. He plays a variety of things in different songs, and in this one plays a variation of the bag pipe called the uilleann pipe.

7. Elan - (this is an extremely up beat high energy song that just leaves you feeling good). The Wembley Arena Show is a great one to react to.

9. Nemo - Nemo is from a Latin word which means no one or nobody. It is about a time in Toumas life when he felt his direction in life was aimless, and without real direction. It’s an awesome song and a HUGE favorite of long time fans. This song was originally written during the Tarja Era (the first singers era).
