Thrilled to hear this learned, though all too brief, discussion of the artistry of the great Mary Lou Williams, a vastly influential pianist, composer, arranger, mentor and educator of the Swing Era and beyond, and one of my idols.
🎹 I love Mary Lou and love Marion Mcpartland as well. I got 2 give props 2 the woman piano players. And there are many more. Good job I love watching and listening 2 u. U play great.🎶💜
Helen's "Piano Jazz" with Marian McPartland remains one of my all-time favs (12 years on, clearly). Such a player, true connection with the music, brilliant mind.
Helen I dont think Marylou would have so matter of factly stated that swing in a such and such finite depiction as You ,Authority is not the Nature of this Music even at its most intense offerings, but Grace and tender Heartedness is a shared quality of this Music by its very nature
I saw Helen and her band at The Jazz Standard with guest appearances by Cecile McLorin Salvant, Carolyn Leonhart, and Ingrid Jensen about 4 months ago. It was the third time I'd seen her. A great young pianist, a beautiful woman, and an even better person. This is a treat for me.
Helen, I love the history of music and how you teach us this lesson, specially the overview on the piano.
Short but so enlightening, this should be hour-long.
I could listen to hours of this style of piano! What a sound!!!!
So refreshing!

I'm in tears too, Helen Sung. Tears of joy.

I love Mary Lou Williams! There always seems to be more to learn about her influence on the genre.
I love Helen Sung. Discovered her fantastic-ness while seeing her perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center - several years ago...

Thanks so much Helen. I've known and enjoyed your work for a while now and then you introduce me to Mary Lou Williams - somebody I should know.
Really excellently put together, and very well spoken.
Great information, Thanks!

Swing is created through the tension of triplets played against fours. The proverbial shuffle. It really is magical.
My Baby Brother & Sisters Godmother.... Hamilton Terrace, New York... always asking me to wash her Cadillac when I was a Pre-teen...
I wonder what classical pianists like Bach and Beethoven would think of these compositions if they were to hear them
