GOLF - HOW TO HIT YOUR IRONS STRAIGHT and LONG

  • I have always been obsessed with creating a huge amount of lag and then having a lot of shaft lean at impact. The problem was that the harder I try to retain the lag and lean the shaft at impact the more I would throw it away! So annoying!
    Even worse, wheni would feel that my lag was really good and I was compressing the ball nicely, BAM. A case of the shanks would him me like a bitch slap to the face.
    I had a golf lesson with Monte Scheinblum the other day and I was finally able to retain the lag and have great shaft lean at impact without cheating it by lungeing my head towards the target and I did it all by changing my swing intention to the polar opposite of what I had been doing!!!
    Monte had me only take the club back with a no shoulder turn wrist set and then from the top, only feel like I was dumping the lag as hard as possible, just flipping my rigt wrist to a bowed condition. So I gave it a shot, it was simple to do but it feel different, gross feeling really.
    But the proof was in the slow mo and OMG I was retaining more lag by trying to dump all of it than I ever had by trying to sustain it.
    The key is that trying to flip it speeds up the right hand to keep up and in front of your body. Yes, the hips go first but that will happen naturally.
    I made my swing shallower (which I desparately needed) and my 7 iron flew oly about 20 yards further with a smoother feeling swing.
    A game changer for me!
    Since the lesson I have been to the range 4 time and I am proud to say I have been disciplined enough to not let myself take 1 single "old swing" every swing was with this new feel of "flipping" on the way down.
    There is still a lot of work to do, especially when it comes to direction control and the driver but the good shots are so much better than my good shots from before so I know I'm onto something.

    My coach has been telling me to "throw" my right hand at the ball for 3 seasons of golf and I never understood. I was too busy doing what Brandon was doing....trying to copy the pros swing without having all the components. I got up from my chair and did this drill... Just concentrating on "flipping the wrists and the strike was everything I've been looking for. Maybe it took this long to be ready to understand or maybe it was seeing the before and after of Brandon's swings to believe that doing or should I say thinking of doing what I've read NOT TO DO could actually getting me to a better impact. Thank you.

    Watched this video and it Changed my LIFE! Monte has really helped me turn the "lightbulb" on with this. It makes so much since now. I went to the range and hit the ball more consistently, with more distance, better contact, more draw....I not only impressed myself but was asked to hold a mini clinic for some guys at the range. I didn't tell them I've only been playing for 3 months lol. I was dead on at 100 yards. Surgical with with pitching wedge. 5 iron was hitting the back of the net. Driver was sending balls over net into the neighborhood for sure. Confidence is through the roof. BEST VIDEO ON THE INTERNET. PERIOD. This needs a million hits like yesterday. I can't wait to go to the course with my new and improved swing. This concept of "intent" is the freakin holy grail of golf lessons. Thank you!

    Thank you so much Monte. I was practicing this drill in my room at 1am last night. Today I went and shot my lowest score ever a 93. 5 pars, the most I've ever shot in a round, and generally just hitting the ball so clean. I maybe only duffed or shanked one every now and again, but I was around 8/10 iron shots being really great shots, and this is after about an hr of practicing this drill. This drill really worked for me and the change was unbelievable. Can't wait to see what results more hrs of practice bring me. Thank you so much I've subscribed to your channel and have started watching some of your other clips.

    Brendon, you are a smart student and got yourself a great teacher. I do teach but at different field hence encounter similar condition of clients who need adjustment and or proper instructions. To me, convincing many of students to follow the instructions to make them better can get tough especially when they already have built incorrect muscle memory and info but caring teachers never give up and Monty hasn't gave up on you ; ). Monty, I have watched many videos on youtube and read many books for few years to figure out my flaws on long game but almost none of them were useless except this one although recently I found myself extra few yards by tinkering this and that. This video instruction particularly, similar to fly casting, that I never tried and will apply to my golf swing next time. You guys a great pair to making better golf for everyone!

    I also did this drill and completely was floored by video results. Just try made a backswing without turning (feels like I set wrist and lift arms)and on downswing I just try to throw my right wrist angle at the ball. Incredible results. Monte, I live in Orlando and have followed your videos for a couple of years. I tried to go to the 2-3 day school you did in Tampa last year or the year before cause I liked your style and you seem to be teaching very differently to all the other instructors I've gone too. You give me hope that I can become a good golfer. I've learned since that the faster I swing my arms the more unlikely I will flip and instead the more likely I will hit the ball to the right. If you come back to Florida, please let us know. I can't repay you enough for your help and if you come to Orlando would love to meet you. Your the best!!

    I am 49 years old and have been playing since i was around 25 or so. I have read tons of books and wasted tons of money on lessons and purchased videos. I am constantly thinking about my golf swing. (Or was) I spent a lot of time trying to swing like the pros. I was trying my damnedest to become a swinger(left sided ). I could do it and I got really good power, but I really had to concentrate on every swing. I have an es12 at home. Not quite a flight scope,but It does give ball speed and distance. I was averaging about 120 mph ball speed swinging that way. But like I said, a lot of concentration had to be put on my swing. I decided it was time I went back to becoming a hitter because it didn't require nearly as much concentration for me. I start out with a little lean , and let my hands set at about my halfway point. The only thing I try to do is throw from my trigger finger on my right hand. Takes a little timing, but the power I get from it is effortless . It may not look effortless , but to me it is. I can get the ball speed with my seven iron between 128 and 132 ,mph. I think what I am doing is what your drill has you doing. Keep up the good work.

    Had watched this when it first came out and thought it was interesting but had kind of forgot about it. Had a little breakdown in the swing recently and was rerunning some of your vids and hit this one again. Tried it on the range. It worked for me. Then took it to the course. It seriously works. Made a huge difference to clean solid strikes with seemingly less efforts than trying to "hold lag." Probably the best counter intuitive piece of golf swing info I've ever watched that actually worked.
    Thanks Monte and Brendon!

    I don't think he's got a proper take away , his wrist sets on the upswing which i was taught to keep the handle pointed toward my belly button. This alows for a more consistant take away in my opinion.

  • @JJ_TheFitRecruiter
    @JJ_TheFitRecruiter 4 роки тому +1

    This is really interesting. I think I understand a big part of golf is what you feel you are doing is not what is happening in reality. Hence why golf instructors do drills to exaggerate a movement to condition the body to feel a certain way. However, when Monte ask you to set your wrist early...isn’t this counter intuitive to all the instructions on creating width and setting your wrist late? Are you setting your wrist early as part of this “exaggerated” move but in reality your wrist was set at the perfect time even though you feel it is early? When I look a the slow motion, i feel your swing looks pretty narrow...

    Love you guys. Say, check this out and see what you think?
    This slow motion: ua-cam.com/video/6dG9hb3_blo/v-deo.html shows something quite different than how golf is taught. All the instructors almost to a man or woman insist you strike irons down, covering the ball first and then take shallow divot. A friend of mine (he's a scratch) showed me last summer, insisted that I hit before the ball by an inch to 1.5 inches to begin skimming the grass, then hit the side of the ball. I humored him and it worked, but when he was gone, I laughed and went back to a descending blow. Tonight I looked at this video above and it shows conclusively that my friend was right. I went out to my mat in the garage and hit every club like a pro into my net, clean, explosive shots! Trust me, this is for real!

    I've never felt so similar to a player in my life. For 2 years I've been working on this, I have a great fluid swing and I look at it face on and it makes me sick. The obsession with getting the lower half moving forward leaves the hands behind (lagging) completely wrong. I care more about forward shaft lean than scores and I can still shoot pretty well. If I can get proper impact, who knows what can happen. I'm going to try this today...

  • @jdunkftw2404
    @jdunkftw2404 9 років тому +2

    My swing looks a whole lot like the "before" swing. Tried this on the range today with pretty good results. The most noticeable thing was that it felt easier to hit good shots. I didn't have to sync my lower body with my shoulders and hands like I used to. As long as I swing my right hand/arm out toward the ball (so I don't pull it), I don't have to worry about anything else to make solid contact and hit the ball straight.

Ive played golf my whole life and recently had a swing analysis at Golf Tec which was very helpful and I learned how I was working way too hard with very similar faults as yours. Monte basically gets you into the correct position with much easier swing thoughts. Its going to take work for me to really just concentrate on just hinging my wrists to prevent overturning and getting too long but thats what I need most. BE BETTER GOLF I don't think that the flip "feeling" phenomenon predisposes to rolling through impact (which is non-DH hand release action) while you are seemingly using a drive-hold (DH) hand release action through impact.

I tried this "no turn- cast" drill and I'm now sliding less (about two inches at my shoulder level) but I am still flipping at the bottom. Could you make a suggestion that would eliminate the flip and produce forward shaft lean instead? Thanks in advance...

      BE BETTER GOLF Okay, well I decided to toss out all the tips I have seen on UA-cam and start over. I went to the range yesterday and my only swing thoughts were 'balance' and 'loose grip', which I think Monte stresses as basics to key on. Also I slowed my swing down. I managed to get back all the distance I had lost these past few weeks. Was hitting my 5 iron 200 yds, which is good for me as it was 165- 170 just last week. Even so I booked some lessons with Monte to get his feedback. Thanks Brandon and everyone else for posting your tips.

    Perfect video for me. I have been working hard at ball first and then divot contact. Could not keep my head from going forward either. I found my way to setting my hands by my self and hit a lot of better shots but my bad misses would be shanks. It felt like I could not release, The idea of the release in this video was the magic key. Results were straight shots and 18 yards more distance per club. BTW the head moves down slightly and back slighly at impact. It was a great lesson for me.
    Thanks

      Doug Morrison You saying I should feel my head move slightly down and backwards at impact?

    • @dmvault215
      @dmvault215 9 років тому

      BE BETTER GOLF No, I am saying that I am seeing my head staying inside the box but moving about an inch backwards and about 2 inches down. The ball flight is a tad higher but considerably longer, I have been using this for a week and the video is similar to your results.

    I'm not so sure yet about this "No Turn Cast Drill." I've tried it indoors and while the Trackman numbers are better than with my normal "pretty" swing, slow motion video shows that I'm still unhinging my wrists too early in the downswing. I've been fighting this malady for years and while I score well (6 hdc'p) my iron distances are lacking so I've bookmarked this video and will watch it again and again to see if I missed something. Maybe the thing about moving the arms through? Or is it my transition? I dunno...this is such a hard game!

    I tried this in my game on Thursday. Set the wrist and try to cast the right hand as fast as possible. Despite 1 quad & 5 doubles, still managed to shoot my best score since April 2019. Also my spinout disappeared and proper weight transfer resulted. Best ball contact for a very long time. Looking forward to future improvement as I become more used to this swing routine.

    This could have been a lesson for me! I'm a 4 handicap with the same swing flaws outlined hear, and I was shocked with monte's advice.....then I went to the range and tried it!!! I couldn't believe the results! Shallowed out my divots and strike was more consistent . . . . however, I still get chunky contact sometimes which shakes my confidence in the no turn cast drill as, I agree, it is totally counter intuitive to most golf instruction . . . . any additional insight or advice to buoy my resolve? Thanks for a great show....love the vids!

    I always wondered why some of my best shots at the practice range were coming during my first few "warm-up" swings. This video clearly shows that I was closer to the ideal position at the top using what felt like a half-swing than my full swing. Then I added the "flip" Monty talked about on the downswing and felt even more solid contact. Because there is little excess body or hand movement everything is in balance and the swing is easy to reproduce. One of your best videos, Monty, and look forward to more practical advice like this!

    It looks like to achieve the 'new' swing, you aren't taking as full of a swing as you're 'old' swing. Did the ball go as far? Straight?

  • @AtEboli

    It's hard to believe that he hit a 7 iron 194 yards. The average tour pro hits a 7 iron about 175 yards. Even factoring in a tail wind, that doesn't seem likely.

    Question for you Monte and Brendan. If this is a drill. How do you implement this into a full swing? Or is this a feel for how a full swing should feel like? Maybe I am getting confused on the "drill" part. This is great stuff.

    Tried this on the range today. Shocked to see amazing results. Completely different feel what impact was so much better. Hitting an eight iron 160 plus yards. Are you kidding me. Lol Question is your grip strong or neutral ? I've experienced so many problems in getting stuck with my right elbow on the downswing with my right hip. This eliminated all of my swing thoughts. The important part for me was on the way down letting the hands go. Thank you so much for sharing.

    I've seen your lessons with Mike and now also with Monte. Just wondering what methods/principals you are currently using Mike or Monte's as they are considerably different particularly where the hands go on the way down as Mike wants them in tight to the body and Monte want them more forward out in front of you. Love to get your thoughts.

    Brendon watched this video a long time ago and really did not focus on it. I was way to into trying to get more distance with lag. BINGO now I'm realizing how much this lesson might have been the moment things started to change for you. This has made a big difference in my ball striking as well.
