  • Is Frieza becoming an anti-hero or an anti-villain? #DragonBallSuper has reinvented Freeza a lot since his debut in DBZ. What will his time in Dragon Ball Super Broly tell us about his character arc in the future. Has King Cold's experiment failed or was this all part of the plan as Freeza matures and grows older. Will he TRUST Goku and the Saiyans as well as the Dragon Team? Let's discuss.

Many believe that Evil has a tangible form in some regard; or may be used to describe someone's/something's nature(or behavior.) While there is some truth in my latter statement, philosophical bias, and collective superstition led many to misinterpret the proper terminology of the adverb. Evil can be used to describe the intent of (an) action(s) undertaken by an individual, or a group of like-minded people. For Frieza, this is the norm. He is selfish, and seeks retribution from those who humiliated him in the past. I believe that there is good in him, but he lacks the desire for absolute redemption. On a smaller scale? Perhaps.

Anti-villain. He still does endlessly evil things but at the end of the day, if the universe is about to be destroyed, he'll stand up...mainly because he lives there but still. Also, being 100% honest I actually like this maturing of Frieza from just "evil emperor" to a villain with multiple dimensions to him. Let Cell be the unashamedly evil one, Frieza having an army to back him and an entire empire at his beck and call is *far* more interesting.
At least that's my feelings on it, really depends on how they swing it at the end of the day.

I love Frieza as a character in Dragon Ball Super. I think it was completely one hundred per cent the right decision to bring him back and keep him into the series. The way Frieza’s character was written throughout the Tournament of Power arc in Dragon Ball Super and the Dragon Ball Super Broly movie was sport on perfect. The writers need to keep a villain in the show to keep it interesting. I want Frieza to stick around for quite some time in the Dragon Ball series, he has earned his place.

  • @CassidyShadewing

I definetly see him as evolving into an Anti-Villain in the likes of Magneto or Dr Doom from Marvel. A villain you can like, even respect, but also knows where the line is... usually. I doubt he'll ever go as far as Anti-Hero like Vegeta (or where Magneto has kinda gone in comics); but he's likely never gonna be the main villain again. He's still potentially a threat, but more then likely he'll try to avoid getting on the wrong side of the Z fighters or Gods.

    • @King-mg7vy
      @King-mg7vy 4 роки тому

Magneto was never a villain....not really. Sure, he was "portrayed" as one, but why...because he has a more blunt, direct approach to dealing with the humans who, on every possible occasion, prove him right, that humans just....won't...leave them be, they gotta push, until someone who will push back...pushes back. Hell, even now, in the new X books we can see how, despite having basically an entire country to themselves, not bothering anyone, humans just can't leave it be. Dr. Doom is just an asshole with a MASSIVE superiority complex.

That'd actually be a good match up given the nature of Saiyan Zenkais seeming to scale to the immediate opponent's strength. Goku would need to spend a little time getting Frieza's power up to Cell saga levels, but from there, the pair would improve at a frighteningly fast pace, and not only that, Frieza will actually have a proper, competent training partner, proper training methods and even an instructor who knows what he's doing, instead of whatever ramshackle workout program he threw together in RoF, because his rapid improvement aside, Frieza, while cunning, is still very much a brawler, no real skill or martial arts system, just raw strength, speed, crazy durability and a few cool techniques. I'm not a Dungeons & Dragons guy, but one of the things I really like about the game is their alignment system. Lawful, Neutral and Chaotic set against Good and Evil. So when set against that backdrop Freeza is Lawful Evil and always has been. You sort of have to be in order to organize, grow and maintain a galactic empire. His M.O. was enacting his evil through the rule of law, whereas Buu was Chaotic Evil and destroyed for the sake of destruction. I wonder if I could make an argument for Cell be Neutral Evil? Hmmm...

I thought it would have been an interesting step for Frieza to be shaken by the prospect of the Tournement of Power and to use it as an excuse to continue the expansion of his empire under the guise of "increasing the level of civilisation throughout the universe". After all, whenever we saw scenes of his controlled planets they all incorporated the Cold/Frieza Force's Technology and he does arguably bring all races under him into a state of peace (albiet using an iron fist). I think this Justification would make for an interesting growth for the character and almost embolden him that his previous actions were justified beyond a basic desire for power and dominance.

You can't bring back a character that's been long outgrown by the heroes without giving him some kind of development.
Forcing him to develop physically (which according to R: F, is something he never had to do) and reckon with the fact that there are still other that can and will beat him means he can't be as one-note as he was.

Things that remain static or revert to their undeveloped selves are casted out of the narrative because they no longer show a need to improve- leadings to their fall to obscurity or death.

Not sure if the DBS crew will go this way, but Frieza has some great potential to remain a Villian. During Namek, Frieza was not truly a Landshark. He was a Gang Boss. His authority derived from his physical power, "Rule of the Strong." His death(s) changed that he can't be a Gang Boss anymore. Landsharks (Japan and elsewhere) derived their power from POSITION (of wealth). Buying the Strength of Governments and their "Laws".
Frieza only ever really knew Physical power. He wanted more of it to secure his place as unchallenged authority. It would be interesting for him to discover and use the other levers of power. Emotional and psychological manipulation. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the play he's getting. Trying to steal dragon balls to increase his physical height, because of his vanity.... While correct to his character, the execution still feels like he isn't growing as a Villain.
Which sadly is moving him toward Anti-villian Comic Relief. Of all the Villians of Dragon Ball, Frieza really had the opening to be a Lex Luthor but Dragon Ball style. Taking cruel enjoyment from fights of the mind, as much as physical fights. A villian we'd love to hate because he's constantly subverting the expectation that Might alone wins all. A true despotic Landshark, using all the levers of power against the heroes. In both grand and petty ways.

There is something I've wondered about since I was a kid. I remember seeing on the show about villains claiming to sell entire planets to the "highest bidder." I've never seen a Dragon Ball Z episode where Frieza or the Saiyans were shown being paid. Kinda curious who does that as they could make interesting villains themselves.

He's a straight up villain. Frieza has literally done 0 good aside from hanging from a tree listening to happy music. Self preservation is not a good or bad trait. Self preservation is outside the bounds of good vs evil or villain vs hero.
Frieza kills his own troops, kills troops from other dimensions, kills humans, Namekians, Saiyans, Cerelians, his own race etc. Frieza is sorta like a galactic ancient emperor. No villain or hero is good all the time or bad all the time.
    Not even Mickey Mouse.

Have to agree Frieza is definitely an Anti-villain and I hope he stays that way it's a far more interesting dynamic especially as its one not done that often.
I'd really like to see his character evolve more into being a ruthless and evil leader, but who has more of a positive attitude towards those he keeps around him but will still eliminate them should they outstay their welcome.

I personally think Frieza will always be a villain, but one who doesnt just destroy everything. He showed in the Broly movie, he allowed his subjects to talk to him and it surprised them. Well except Berryblue, she knew she was safe.

I would argue that freeza was less about chaos or evil, but rather pure greed. Sure, he had a sadistic streak, but before he wanted to cause pain, he wanted everything he could take. I would also say that his cruelty is a consequence or having the power to get what he wants however he wants, including the dignity of those who would defy him. This can be seen in how he takes planets, races, and attempts to steal immortality from the dragon balls. In general, he wants material possessions. However, once he gets humiliated by Son Goku, he begins to want something else, satisfaction, or rather, revenge. Then he gets humiliated again and gets basically gets tortured for several years. He still wants satisfaction and revenge, but has been forced to confront the truth that he needs to be stronger in order to get his revenge. So he trains, fights goku, and manages to humiliate the saiyan in return by dealing a critical blow through a minion, but then dies again. At this point, being in hell, he still dislikes the saiyans, but can at least stomach fighting alongside them at this point. Also, as he should be aware they are willing to allow him to do as he pleases, he can create a greater force over time with which to destroy them, so he'll test out a new soldier on them, but he won't risk being sent back to hell by fighting them himself. I would also say that the majority of why his demeanor has changed has to do with being in hell for so long and with being forced to work with goku and the others. He now dislikes not having fun, and has grown to understand that it can be enjoyable to act informal with others. Rather than joining the "good guys" he's simply began applying what he's learned to his own life. The biggest change since the Namek saga being that he knows he enjoys fighting. In short, he's become a person who wants to have fun, doesn't mind being extremely informal with those he surrounds himself with, who loves to fight, who is preparing to defeat the strongest person he's gone up against.
Tldr: Freeza has gone from reflecting some of Goku's Traits to most of Goku's traits

I still get confused on the definition of anti-villain vs anti-hero. I just looked up the definition too, and for some reason I still can't put my finger on it. Seems to me, at it's core, it's about two polar opposite roles. One does good thing for bad reasons, and the other does bad thing for good reasons. If that is the definition, which one does Freeza fall into? Well in the tournament of power, he defended Universe 7 from a bad fate, so he did a good thing. The reasons he did it was to protect himself from being erased from existence, and he wanted to be resurrected. He did a good thing for a selfish (I.e bad) reason. Is that an anti-hero or anti-villian?
Beyond this, however, seems to me he's still a pure villain, doing bad things for bad reasons. He's gone back to his evil ways of conquering other worlds that don't want to be conqured. Although this is relegated to the background, we see worlds fighting Freeza's forces back in an attempt to protect themselves from being conquered, and while that is going on Freeza is just chilling on his throne and talking about whimsical stuff like wishing he was a few inches taller. Evil is being wrought in front of him and he's so chill about it that the suffering he brings doesn't even enter his conscious thoughts AT ALL. He's still scheming how to get around this "Goku" problem, but this time he's being patient and calculating about it. He's no longer underestimating his opponent, and instead seeks out ways to more safely undermine his nemesis. "Nemesis" is a key word here that puts him clearly in the antagonists role, and that role is reserved for anyone against the heroes, which means villain. Just straight up villain. No anti anything. He's still a pure villain who occasionally works with the heroes if he has to. Freeza will do whatever it takes to further his goals, no matter the cost unless the cost scarifies too much from himself. As a villain, he is always looking after number 1 (himself) and must always come out on top no mater what, period. Freeza is no longer working with absolutes, however. He's flexible in his approach to solving problems. The problems he deals with and the options that seems available dictate his actions. If doing what others consider a good thing furthers his agendas, then fine. Whatever. Whatever works, works. If doing an evil thing fuhrers his goals then he'll do that too. I even think he prefers that options because it makes him seem like he doesn't compichulate or seem weak in any way, according to HIS definition of being weak.
Freeza can now respect his opponents, something he didn't do before, but that doesn't mean he's anywhere near true friendship levels with the other characters. I have always saw this as a calculating and manipulative character. He used to have a massive ego and thought himself invincible accordingly, and yet he sought out ways to make himself immortal as if he was terrified at the mere possibility of failure. None of that stopped him from being occasionally diplomatic while at the same time subtly or overtly insulting whomever he's talking to. All of this he did for fun.
In the new Brolly movie, I'm honestly still confused why Freeza doesn't seek immortality. In my opinion, he should be more determined for that wish then ever before. Not only would that make him truly invincible, but it's another safeguard against a fate far worse that death, and that is returning to his personal hell. The only reason I can see for his actions in that movie is maybe he no longer fears hell because he calmed his mind enough to ignore such distractions, which is another reason he's so calm now.

Not to mention where the hell were his two advisers Kikono and Berryblue in all of this and why didn't he contact them when he got revived the first time around? It's like Toriyama just put them in to make the Galactic Frieza Army look interesting and deep with no clear thinking and because of that it creates more plot holes in the story when you think about it. I swear Toriyama needs to abandon his writing by the seat of his pants approach and actually do some long term thinking.
