    Good video. A note for those without a "punch"....The SKS and AK were designed for take down in field without tools. A 7.62 cartridge tip is used to disassemble the trigger group in the field.

    Nice video. When you first started recoil spring was in backwards, curly portion goes forward. You did it right at the end. Critical thing with cleaning is that the firing pin must be free moving. Shake the bolt to make sure that firing pin moves. SKS are known to slam fire if firing pin not mobile and very dangerous. These are great rifles. The one you are showing is a beauty. Borescoped mine and not pretty but still shoots well.

      True on the recoil spring, this isn't my rifle so I'm not sure who cleaned it before me but thank you for watching and your advice, too!

    Beautiful weapon/work of art. Btw before bolt install shake it and listen for fireing pin rattle. The rattle confirms you are good to go to install bolt/bolt carrier group. The rattle indicates the pin is free floating and so the risk of slam fire is very low. Awesome video.

    I only did part of the cleaning because I was unable to get the trigger group out. But I cleaned everything on the bolt and recoil spring with rem oil (only stuff I have and i think it preserves it well). The bolt is so much easier to pull back. The previous owner didnt clean up this black stuff (assuming it was carbon buildup). I'm new to guns as my parents never got into them. But this video was very helpful. Thanks a ton.

    • @travisp11
      @travisp11  3 роки тому

      To get the trigger group out try using a screw driver with a bit in the end of it that allows you to press down with some force. The trigger group is a pain to remove but once you have done it a few times it is easier.

    Looks like the recoil spring that was pulled out was installed backwards. The curvy part of the spring should be facing towards the front of the rifle.When you pulled it out the curvy spring part came out first which was facing towards the rear of the gun.

    Good job. I'd just suggest you start wearing gloves while using oils & solvents..to protect from your skin from absorbing bad stuff, that may end up in your bloodstream.

    Very good demonstration! I just got an sks and the guy I bought it from told me he cleaned the cosmoline off it and never shot it, when I got it I stripped it down it looked to be in pristine condition however I was mainly looking for carbon residue that would indicate if he shot it or not, no carbon residue was found but a little bit of yellow grease, would that be cosmoline?
    One more question, my magazine has a bit of a hard time releasing, it takes some force to pull the lever back and let the mag open, would I need to replace any springs or is that normal? . Thanks!

    • @travisp11
      @travisp11  2 роки тому

      I think the amount of spring tension would be normal as they used some strong springs in the build of these firearms. If that grease you mentioned before is sticky, it may be whats left of the cosmoline.

    • @MaxWray111
