I was surprised the air defence systems were deleted at the time of construction, but given the situation at the time, I'm guessing it was essential to save the project from being cancelled completely. it's a good design and glad it survived.

Yet another excellent overview of a topic. The narration is smooth and relaxed, theres none of the silly razmattaz and loud music on other video channels. Dare I say though I spot one tiny oversight (whos perfect). During the Cold war it wasnt just the USN that had LHD ships, the British navy had HMS Fearless and Intrepid. These had both a he licopter deck and a wet well for landing craft. However they could not operate fixed wing aircraft like the American ones with their Harriers.

Weapon Detective... Do a show on total naval ships of the EU. I'd like to know how they match up to the USA. Also, do it for the neighbouring countries of China, South China Sea. Top stand alone political/military in the world today is USA, EU, China, India, Russia. No Asian blocks... where one is most needed. China arbours the hornet nest. Seeing Iron Dome perform must have really scared them. Saturation attacks are a historical tactic used in China, going back thousands of years. What scares China the most is a Japan/Korea "joining of hands". Korea is perfectly placed to defend Japan. What can Japan do to defend Korea? Japan needs a lot of small carriers to adsorb the initial volleys of missiles from China. Lines of naval ships loaded to sinking with missiles. Iron dome showed the mayhem of saturation attacks can be managed. Hordes of soldiers, or missiles, or ships, or tanks... China has always envisioned mass attacks of some kind. Take away that tactical freedom and there goes any superiority large numbers brings. 50.000 small killer drones hunting for any Chinese uniforms could swat any swarm attack. I know, reverse is true... but I'm betting the Yanks have a few tricks that they ain't a telling.

It is 'believed' to assist in getting A/C ( such as Harriers [which I was surprised the Spanish were keeping for Much longer than I thought!!] and F-35Bs with a heavier weapons load out ... to get into the air on such a "short runway".
But if you look at the American class LHAs and LHDs .... They DON'T have it, and they are able to launch their A/C easily. But You also have to consider ....... How far do they need to fly to combat??
IF you are using your jets (Harriers / F-35B) for short assaults on beach, fire support..... just get the plane into the air and waste the fuel getting it UP there (in the air and over the target). On-the-other hand, if you are doing a CAP (carrier air patrol) you need to conserve fuel...thus having the 'ski-ramp' idea is adequate!
This is MY thinking as a USN Veteran of 20+ years escorting those ships of the US......does that make sense, that is what "I" am thinking, especially the first paragraph.

    • @andresmartinezramos7513

the carrier ramp assists in the launch of the aircraft, effectively increasing runway length. This means that more fuel and weapons can be carried aboard an aircraft from the same span of runway without the use of a catapult.

What's the point of building what are essentially light/Assault Carriers just to limit their ability to defend themselves project power engage with and defeat peer level aggressors? If they didn't want an LHD/LHA then they should have invested in more LzpD or LSD type vessels like the Karel Doorman or San Antonio Class,I could just be over thinking it though smh wasted money.......
