  • The reason your volley technique breaks down when the ball is hit hard and fast to you is that you could be swinging too much. In this video, I'm going to show you the correct volley technique for dealing with hard-hit shots at you by using your shoulders to prepare faster. by the end of this video, you'll learn how to handle those hard-hit shots and more.

Beautiful video! Finally a simple & easy to understand information on the volley! This is what I’ve been missing on volleys the whole time! Had no idea what to do, but I just keep swinging at the ball, but I knew that wasn’t how it’s supposed to be bc I get so many errors like you said.

"Load..push" will be my new mantra anytime I'm at the net. I'll work on it when next I'm on the courts! It seems like this mentality works with groundstrokes as well.

I tried your technique of holding the racquet. But when a fast hit ball is directly coming at your body...Its kind of difficult to fend it away....

    nice lesson Kevin .
To begginers i teach it according to MTM to simplify to begginers. keep your arms in front while waiting for the ball, find the ball with your hand pull the raquet to the inside (left on the forehand and right on the backhand) on the backhand point the butt of the raquet at the ball. when you eliminate all the other factors (such as turning your shoulders , footwork, etc.) you get results faster .
Although everything you said is absolutely right ! but I tell them to focus on their hands and point of contact and finish for quicker results.
    Thanks for the video!

I played this morning and one of my opponents was crushing shots from the baseline, and I just could not handle them well at all. I'm going to work on these turns at home before I play again, and I bet they help. Thanks!

Great topic. It’s hard to not hit it all the way back to the baseline, or past it. The other issue is framing the ball and it never goes over.

I wish you were my coach, Kevin! I really appreciate your positive attitude, it’s like (Ryan Reidy says), “Hey, you got this!” Okay, I wish you AND Ryan Reidy were my coaches, heh-heh.
But seriously (folks), do you think you could coach someone in a wheelchair? No no, you can stay standing, I mean... OH, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!
I am aware that there are some major differences, but at the end of the day (or hell, regardless of the hour), it’s all about what happens when the ball meets the racket. (Mr. Ball, meet Mr. Racket!)
My biggest problem is, when I was nine and I wanted this pony, see... My biggest problem is I can’t stay focused. On the court, as well as in the comment section. I am a nervous, high-strung tennis player.
I overthink and overreact, I under prepare and can’t relax on court. I’m one of those guys who hits a mean ball in practice (resisting temptation to joke), but once the chair says “play”(a talking chair!), like Patsy Cline sings, I fall to pieces!
I need to be able to calm myself and stay focused, to track the ball well, stay relaxed eand play the game the way I know that I can. That’s all I ask. Short of (re)reading Inner Tennis and/or entering a zen monastery to resume my meditation practice, is there anything you can suggest to help with my jangling nerves, my jittery eyes and my sweaty palms? I mean, it’s not like I’m asking Pamela Sue Anderson out on (yet another) date!
    P. S. I know “Sue” was a philosophy professor at Oxfords. How she looked in swimwear is unknown and irrelevant, to my tennis game, at least, and my marriage. For SURE. I can be reachz

I think this is geared to 4.0 mid to low range NTRP. 4.5 NTRP balls come much faster than this and the margin of error between long, deep floating and deep with pace is razor thin. Reaxtion times are probably 2 tenths of a second. How do you get to that level from low 4.0 level?

Good content, but I think a lot of you guys talk too much and demo too little. I'd rather see 11 minutes of you hitting volleys, full speed and slow motion, and then just having a voice over.
