  • Ann Blyth was inexplicably dubbed by Gogi Grant when she made "The Helen Story," but here she is in her own voice singing "Can't Help Lovin' That Man," proving they should have let her do her own singing.

She scared me to death in those Hostess commercials back when I was a kid.

I must say I’m impressed with Ann Blyth in this video but the studio must have had their reasons for dubbing her in the film.I recently
purchased the original “Show Boat” on DVD and Helen Morgan’s magic was certainly impossible to replicate ; the perfect Julie.Thanks.

I don't think they had a very good reason, however, as this clip testifies.

@@bangbgood , Whatever their motivation for the dubbing, the soundtrack L.P. featuring Gogi Grant was a big seller,
even down here in New Zealand while the film flopped badly with no interest shown in Ann Blyth once her operetta
days were over.I liked Ann Blyth too but there’s no escaping the fact that her last few films were all box-office flops.

Ann Blyth s voice was neerer Helen Morgan. Gogi Grant was popular but not the right singer for the role .Ann should havr sung in the movie the right voice for the role

Ann Blyth's beautiful voice was much closer to Helen Morgan's style of singing. But Polly Bergen garnered praise for her portrayal of Morgan with a much deeper voice. So Blyth was dubbed. Sad since Blyth was the better actress and singer.

It was Gogi Grant not Polly Bergen who dubbed Ann Blyth in.the movie.
I agree Ann should have sang in the movie. She did this program at the same time the film was made showing another Warner mistake.Because of it she wasnt nominated for an Oscar best actress for The Helen Morgan story .

Actually, Polly Bergen did do a TV movie version in the mid 1950s of the Helen Morgan story. She acted and did her own singing in that TV version. It was so very successful that wb then made a big wide screen lavish version. Judy Garland was first offered the role later by them after making "a Star is Born". However, for some reason she declined the role... As she also did with "the three faces of Eve".
