Biz civ helped it a lot too because advancing to Imp costs -33% but is surprising anyway
Byzantines is the only civ that can pull off such a fast imp and win. Turks will just get outlasted if their initial fast imp push fails.
23 minutes 34 secs to get through the wall with bombard cannons - insane.
I dont get this....imp was at just over 12 min in the video, why is it saying 20min imp time then? Is it because it is a sped up game somehow and normaly the time would be 20 min?
wow watching viper play makes me realize how nooby i am. by the time he has 27 vills and clicking up im losing a vil to a boar and unsuccessfully luring deer while not having enough food for vills so i can get a lumber camp smh
just a tip. dont lure deer. you can lure deer when you got all other things down.
Watch more of his replay. He usually lures deer while eating second boar. If deer is not easy to lure, like stuck behind tree line, then just dont lure them, a mill would probably do you better. Second boar is like the calmest time, since youre tasking your 6 7 next vills to the 4 last sheep and wood, so you can focus on the scout more
Dude at your level (and mine) it's sufficient to send 4 vils to gather deer. With 4 vils you can gather all the food in one trip and while it's not AS efficient, deer luring is considered a very advanced tactic and the food is still worth it.

Viper i have an idea for a CHALLENGE: use siege ONAGERS to CHOP AROUND the edge of the ARENA map and hit him from behind inside his base!!! I think that would be legendary and glorious!
He would need to smurf to do that as a good player would be castle dropping him by then.
Well, no reason why he wouldn't be able to defend from the attack of the other player in the meantime.

Some say he can drush and castle drop at the same time; And that he can go full camels with Aztecs... all we know is, he’s called TheViper.
For extra chance to win, have three villagers building palisade gates and walls to protect the monks and bombard cannons. 400 HP = 9 extra monks, for 20 wood cost.
I think TaToH would have done better in MoA5 final, game 1, if he had used the 1k gold he spent on Heresy to make monks instead, as he already had atonement. If he had ungarrisoned monks, they would have been next to yours. But he also neglected to attack with villagers, as your opponent did in this game.
One castle-age strategy against this is to put some units in rams. Monks can't convert rams at range. A siege tower could even be appropriate here as it's faster, and so can dodge bombard cannon rounds more easily.
He doesn't really offensively quick wall, it might be a manners thing, since it is one of his many trump cards.
In this case he was having fun running them away. He was curious if his opponent could stop even his casual cavalier monk rush in this game. He was fully prepared to slog it out with the first attack just being a big eco hit to his opponent.
You are likely to see this tactic again though, as with his "mint imperials" it is a safe and powerful play, that cannot be copied by his "rivals"
Here's an idea for a challenge video: play on a laptop using the trackpad instead of a mouse.

Yep. Viper's youtube channel is basically a filter on his twitch to get the best/most interesting games. Both are great though.

Damn I remember when this game actually looked like this.... so glad I had this in my childhood and so glad I didn't understand it to the extent I do now. It's made the game age so well for me and my fellow generation.

i was asking myself the same question.. especially when he started to talk about cataphracts.. why go for cataphracts in a few years, when you can just add handcannons easily, since you already have chemistry

Man, in small engagements the Byzantine monk healing bonus seems to have a significant effect.
And I have problems with moderate AI, man in pvp you would smash me in 15 min xD

I love watching it, he teaches how he does it in one of his videos, he has the best monk micro in the world. There are some handy tricks he uses.
I literally cried when you ungarrisoned from the boar lure and perfect farmed... You are unreal Viper. That was incredible. It is a triple efficiency, you already have it selected, you want it on farms anyway from low HP... ahhh... perfect.

How does he cycle through individual monks when he's converting? I can see that hes not using the mouse to select each one. Is there a hotkey for this or something? Maybe he control groups each monk?

So, the only thing this tactic needs is a way to afford a castle at 25 mins or so. Absolute insane tactic, that largely comes down to luring even the impossible deers you had.
The fun thing is i watch this with no skip to learn the little eco-tricks, hopefully, and then I end up learning nothing, and when I would do it myself it would probably be 24 mins :D

he used quick groups 2 to 9 for individual monks. you can see their numbers at the bottom-left corner of each unit.

You saw the triple scout but you tried monk rush :) and you win. You have to be viper i guess :)
If you are already fast imping as Byzantines, Monks + Spears would work well against the scouts. And that is what Viper went for.
Breaks into enemy civilization with some monks and sone dudes pushing cannons and starts building houses while converting everything

he puts every single monk on a control group, so he hits 1, clicks conversion, hits 2, clicks conversion, hits 3, clicks conversion etc...

Only possible with Byzantines for one. and you saw, absorbing every ounce of food, and only in arena. He is the best player in the world though.

it really confuses me
One reason is he is slavs so he had food for days. I imagine originally his plan was to make use of Druzhina, plus the slavs get full inf tree.
No thumb ring, no arbalest, no bracer,
and that each archer costs more than double a sword. (45 gold vs 20 gold) Meaning there is only half the units, which means viper can pretty much one for one convert them.
Skirm is obvious, countered by bombard cannons, and are the weakest for their investment. plus they are wood intensive which would not be possible time wise as he is trying to mass barracks (or archer ranges)
Slavs are weak to conversion, not really sure what he could have actually done vs viper here.
I feel like he almost fought it off with his approach, I don't think he could have resisted like he did without going swords.

Archers would indeed have been a decent option, but he was Slavs, and Slavs are better with infantry than with archers. I think that is why he went for swordsmen instead.
No, he already researched for swords, and you get less than half for the same gold cost, which with vipers monk micro is suicide.
Also slavs, his benefit is food, so cav and swords are the easiest to spam at this point, which he did very well doing.
Archers would have left him dead.

Why does he destroy his walls?
The rear walls are in the way of expansion, too micro intensive to clear it up later, needs to do it when he has time, also needed the gap to lure boars and deer more quickly.
There is no downside to it as it is safe.

I feel like on steam HD viper should have lose this one, I am not sure if I feel wrong. On voobly we must do patrol on mele unit and they suck regulary, instead of attack move who is better.

Attack move is cool except that sometimes it glitches and units stop attacking after their third attack. Wathc Spirit of the Law's video where he compares patrol and attack move

I think that the difference would be small. Byzantines save on slightly more resources overall, but Italians save on more food.
Malay, Khmer and even Ethiopians might have fast imperial too, but the ethiopian bonus seems a bit weaker.
The Malay civilization bonus is an interesting one. If you don't idle your Town Center, I don't think being Malay will improve your Imp time, but if you do a fast imp, you will have a stronger economy. The reason for this is that the faster advancing bonus means that your Town Center will spend more time creating Villagers.
I don't think that the Khmer bonus plays a big role if you want to fast imp. If you do a fast imp, you'll need some buildings to *do* something with the fast imp anyway.

only at the back which is inaccessible to the enemy, he might have to build and retreat there later and it needs to not be in the way. also he needs to lure faster.
