I remember when my grandmother, Sadie Bockman, used to take me shopping on Market street. Our routine was to park at the south end, walk on the left and stop at all the shops there, then eat lunch at the Woolworth's counter and finish our shopping on the other side, as we walk back to our car. I used to feel so special when we went to get our new school shoes from Buster Browns!
My Mother's family goes back to the 19th century in Wilmington and my family has a lot of stories and wonderful memories that have been passed down for over six generations, as well as photos and some familial heirlooms.
Wilmington growing up for me was the annual spring bus ride to AL's sporting Goods. My brother John And I would by new Athletic socks and of course brand new chuck Taylor Converses
I understand. Wilmington will never be what it was in the 70s, when I was growing up there. Small town atmosphere. But, at least all my "block" long time neighbors and I keep up with each other online, usually. We grew up together from day one to off to college days, and beyond, through deaths, divorces, and other events. In many ways I seem so far removed from the area now, having lived in Virginia, Minnesota, and New Mexico since then, plus a few places in between. Still my native home.
Has anyone out there ever heard of "HAPPY HOUSE"? I found an old article that mentioned that it was in Brack-Ex {Elsmere area} in particuraly in the 1957 era. {The article I have was from Dec., 1957}. It was supposedly a place of some kind {or home} for mentally challenged children or anyone. Any info would be appreciated, especially exactly where it was located.

The woman standing in the bank lounge could be related to me. It was like time traveling to see this. She worked there then.
I think I miss the paper outlet and the bakery the most. I was too young and tomboyish to really enjoy the dress shops.
I'm from Wilmington Delaware 59 years now
right now I cannot look at this because my mom just passed.
I hope time has helped heal your heart.

Sadly the only place that survived is the Hotel DuPont. Its almost constantly under construction which takes away from its majestic presence
