- Here we have something exciting - one of the first modern Samyang lenses to feature autofocus! It's exclusively for Sony mirrorless cameras - full-frame or APS-C. I'd like to thank Intro2020, Samyang's UK distribotor, for loaning me this lens for two weeks for testing.

Such a beautifully designed lens, love the build quality!
Just picked up an A7iii and your reviews are by far the saving grace of knowing nothing about the Sony e mount ecosystem. By far the most effective reviews of lenses I have yet to find.
Glad to be of assistance :-)
Happy that you have your hands on some Sony gear.
I'm looking forward to seeing more reviews.
yay, more e-mount reviews!!
I have been waiting for this man:) Thank you for the effort:)
keep doing sony FE lenses Chris! you reviews are so good
Regards from Chile
Thank you for the very good review, beautiful pictures and good music, too !
Yeah, finally Sony - pls do more reviews like this
Hey Chris, great video! Looking forward to a review of the 85mm 1.4 af from Samyang
I'm watching this review 6yrs later and some of your points still stand the test of time
this is something really big to say for youtubers
Please do a review using full frame alphas on this please.
finally...thanks for the review. i hope you will review more sony lens
Thanks for the detailed review!
Christopher, great reviews particularly those you make side by side. I found fantastic the one where you compared the various Teles from Tamron, Canon & Sigma. If you can I would love to see the Tamron 18-400mm
Glad to see you reviewing Sony glass. Hopefully we will see full frame mirror less soon...and Sony Zeiss. You won't be disappointed 🤗
Christopher a few months ago i I bought the sony a6000 and now see this video, what amazing surprise. Nice 10+
Hey Christ, I had this lens for almost a week now. Always shoot at F1.4 or the furthest i go was F2.8. Today i tested out at f8 and found out a problem with my lens. Not sure if this happen on all samyang 50mm f1.4 FE lens or just my copy. The highest aperture I go, the sound of the aperture blade open and close will be louder while i half press the shutter button. For instance, at F8, I half press the shutter button, the aperture blade will open wide then close up to f8 again. and the sound of the aperture opening and closing is very loud. So what i hear was the electronic focusing sound you showed in your video (3:02) + the sound of the aperture blade open wide and closed up to f8. Did this happen on yours too?
Thank you for the review! I would like to see this review with your A7R II
Does it perform well?
An eyelash short of 100k subscribers. Well done.
I'd be interested to know if this lens is fully compatible electronically with the A6300; for example, does Eye AF work?
Yes, please do more e-mount lenses review.. I think Sony 50 1.8 OSS is the best choice in terms of autofocus speed and image quality for a6300
Have you tried the new Rokinon AF 50mm f/1.4 Series II Full Frame Auto Focus Lens for Sony E (IO5014-E) version?
An updated version of this lens has just been released - hope you manage to get your mits on one for testing...
Hi Christopher! Thanks for making these videos. Is it possible to make a comparison between this lens and the Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 in terms of sharpness and bokeh quality? I recently got myself the Sony A7iii and am thinking of getting native Sony mount lenses rather than using the Sigma MC-11 adapter for Canon lenses.
You can see some sharpness results from the Canon lens on my review of the new Yongnuo 50mm f/1.4 lens
Hello Chris,
Any coming review for the Samyang/Rokinon 20mm f/1.8 ED AS UMC?
Thanks
Hi Chris, I'm a big fan of your reviews and I always use them as reference point when choosing lens. Can you do a review on Tamron 28-300mm f/3.56.3 Di VC PZD Lens.
Thank you
Mine absolutely sucks :(. I guess I did not get lucky with my copy. I’m going to try and buy the dock to update it. I have a A6100. The autofocus jumps everywhere and can’t lock on even in good light.
Hi Chris. Can you do review on samyang 85mm f1.4 af canon ef mount ?
This might sound stupid but... How do you switch it into manual focus mode? I didn't see any switch on the lens itself.
Do the sony systems have the switch built into the bodies?
It's in the menu, not on the lens.
Hi! Great video! Thanks a lot! Would you prefer this lense over the sony 50mm 1.8 with oss (which is also cheaper..)? Do you have any information that can make my desicion easier? :D Thanks a lot in advance!
As I mention in the review, I haven't tested any other 50mm lenses on Sony mount yet. Maybe one day soon
Hi, Christopher, Can you update this lens with your full frame A7R2?
I might ask to borrow the lens again sometime (when I have time - things are pretty busy at the moment)
You are the best! Thanks.
I would also love to see a review of this with a full frame Sony camera.
please do a review on a7rii!!!
@@christopherfrost I'd love to see one as well. Bought the rokinon 35mm f1.4 from your review. Want to see if this is better than the Sony 50mm f1.8
Hi Christopher. Do you have a recommendation or have you reviewed a micro 4/3 lens (G7 specifically) which is wide angle/fisheye and what would be your recommendation. To be used for filming. By the way there is a job going here down south perhaps you could apply for. Comes with a funny hat and a long selfie stick ;) Thanks
Sorry, I don't cover M4/3! And thanks for the offer ;-)
That's OK. If you are ever down south and want to just ping me and you can have a look at mine. Well I hope we get a boss who understands social media. Thanks for the reply.
Hello. Which lens has the better image quality/sharpness? The samyang 50mm 1.4 or the Sony 50mm 1.8 FE?
Nice review, thx. I'll stick to Sigma. It doesn't get better when it comes to auto focus than the recent Sigma lenses, such as the 16mm , 30mm and 56mm f1.4 e mount.
Great review! Do all the pdaf points work with this lens or only in the center (like the Sigma 60mm 2.8) ? And how about Eye-AF?
AF points seemed to work as normal for me. No idea about eye-AF I'm afraid
Great review. How does it compare to the sony zeiss 55mm 1.8? I'm a bit on the fence as to which option I should go with... thank you
As I said in this review, I haven't reviewed any other Sony mount 50mm lenses, so, I can't say
Hi @Cristopher,
Will this work on the sony A6000 camera as it is also E-mount. just called a supplier here in South Africa and the said it will not work which is just weird
The A6000 is an E-mount camera, so yes, it will work
Hey hi, great video, wanna ask u, should I go for Samyang Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 or Ziess 55mm F/1.8 for weddings. Please advice. Thanks.
If you're talking about the AF version of the Rokinon lens, of course, then it is actually a bit sharper. The Zeiss lens has slightly nicer bokeh and it's much smaller and less obtrusive. Personally I'd go for the Rokinon (a.k.a. 'Samyang')
I have bought the full frame Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 for my Sony a7 and I have regretted that. It is a cheap around 300€ and light around 200 grams.
However I should have spent some more money for the autofocus full frame Samyang 50mm f/1.4 or the exceptional Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8.
Except the Zeiss which collaborates closely with Sony, Samyang/Rokinon is the only third party manufacturer of autofocus full frame e-mount lenses. Sigma and Tamron have produced only autofocus APS-C e-mount lenses.
I hope in the future to see your review for the other one 14mm f/2.8 full frame autofocus e-mount lens from Samyang. As far as I know it isn't similar to other Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens for Canon and Nikon.
To be honest the nifty fifty takes really good photos what are you complaining? Do you that sometimes the autofocus of the Samyang doesn’t work on full frame? Even worse you have the a7 which has really slow autofocus.
Foto4Max I currently use the Samyang 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 auto focus works great and image quality is sharp in my A7II. The problem is the color it’s more yellowish but I can fix it in post.
I've only got one Samyang lense, 85mm cine lense and it's fantastic, really sharp
I think it's time for A7 III :)
can't wait for more FE lens reviews :)
I don't use mine enough tbh. It's pretty situational owing to it's size, and middling AF performance (decently quick with AF-C), but when I need beautiful out-of-focus rendering, or I expect to go into a low light shoot, I reach for this. In bright sunlight though, you really need the lens hood. It doesn't resist flaring and low-contrast well at all.
I really hope the mark II version is winging its way from Samyang to you as I'm very interested to see how it performs.
Hi Christopher. Have you ever encountered this lens not focusing properly. Mine just stops sometimes, pretendig it’s a MF lens. When I switch to manual focus, it does still focus by wire.
Huh - I have no idea what's wrong there.
Christopher Frost Photography Probably need to send it out for repair... can’t find anything about it on the internet.
Couldyou already testit ln a fullframe camera? Or could you compare it with other emount fiftys?
I haven't tested it on a full-frame camera, yet
As a Sony FF user I'm glad to finally see an FE mount review from you, but until the results are tested on a FF body it's difficult to make sense of this review, unfortunately.
One day I'll be able to get a Sony FF camera. More people should support me on Patreon ;-)
How loud is the focussing when filming video on AF-C mode?
As loud as it is normally - slightly audible
Thank you - so would your recommend this or its wider 14mm version for vlogging. The sigma art AF for example is just to loud for vlogging
How was it for video auto focus?
Love your content. Are you aware there is a AF version for Canon 85 1.4 BUT there is NOT one signal review in English. Any change you could review it?
There are certainly English language reviews of that lens - have a look on Google
I love the idea behind this lens, but there is so much internal reflection, that's why the contrast is very low. As you are showing the lens, there is HUGE amount of reflection on the glass elements, which indicates low quality coating. For example if you would do the same with a Nikon N lens, it would not reflect back nearly as much light.
Can you do the 55 1.8 Sony zeiss?
e-mount reviews FTW!
Hello Chris, i have been following you for years, really enjoying your work. Its really nice to see that you reviewing Sony e mount lenses now as well. You think that you could review also the Samyang 14mm af? Thanks a lot. See you on the next one.
I'm going to wait until I have a full-frame Sony camera before testing any more FE lenses
Ok Chris - Thanks for the reply. Keep up the good job!
Love this lens on my a6000
Hi Cris can you revieuw samyang af 35mm f1.4
Yes, I will
¿When are you going to test this lens on a full frame Sony body?
Maybe one day :-)
Hi there. how does this hold up to the Sigma art 50mm f1,4? If you have any coments Id love to hear them :-) I am about to get one or the other
The Sigma lens may be a tiny bit sharper - not sure, really
you remind me of the DIYPerks guy.
So after about 2 years, what is the satisfaction rate, of those who own this lens?
Ooh nice you got the Sony a6300, so I'm guessing no more m3 or eos m reviews in the future?
Who said that?! Plenty more Canon reviews coming in the future
Would you suggest this over the Sony 50mm f1.8 fe?
Yup
Please do tamron 150 - 600 g2 review. The dxomark put up very poor number for G2 and says it is less sharper than G1 version. It would be very interesting test. Would like to know ur thoughts. Thanks.
Sounds like doxmark just being weird again - I never pay attention to them
Amen. DXOmark is a untrustworthy site, you'd be better off watching reviews on this channel or something like The Angry Photographer.
Does lot look suitable for any AF video work!!
Hi Christopher. I like your lens review. I'm looking for buying Sony A7iii and want to buy good prime lens. Can you recommend samyang 50mm 1.4 ?
I have tight budget. Please recommend prime and Tele lens . Thanks
Sure, it should be good
@@christopherfrost hi, apart from your review, people said this lens has very loud & slow auto focus ?.
I usually photograph family, portrait, holiday etc. do you think Sony 85mm FE1.8 is better choice ?
Is there samyang 70-200 f2.8 lens, if yes then provide a preview with price tag plz.
Nope
Is this sharper than the 50mm F1.8 sony?
Thank you for the great reviews. They are extremely helpful.
Can you please review xf16-55 which many people are interested in? (or which I am interested in :D)
No plans to in the immediate future I'm afraid!
No problem, Christopher. I can wait. :D
can you recommend a reasonably priced wide angle lens for sony a7
I think Samyang are making a 14mm f/2.8 FE lens right?
Samyang makes great lenses. Love that they keep making full MF lenses as well. :)
What Is the focal length equivalent of 50mm samyang FE in crop sensor?
50mm x 1.6 crop factor
If you're working on a Sony APS-C sensor then it's 50mm x 1.5 = 75mm
Wait... at 5.19 isn't this a watch of the the SBB? :D
Yes it is. The logo is clear. :D
Hello Chris, can you review the sigma 24-60mm f2.8 for canon
Hmm I've never heard of that one! I'll look out for a cheap copy on eBay.
www.ebay.com/itm/Sigma-AF-24-60mm-f-2-8-DG-EX-Lens-For-Canon-Very-Good-Condition-/332145191394?hash=item4d556569e2:g:Km8AAOSwCU1Yuvpe
here is the link on ebay
www.dpreview.com/articles/0227139185/sigma2460 and an article on dpreview
Take note...
The samyang 50mm AF and the a6300 does not offer built in image stability (refered to as IBIS on camera body or OSS on sony lenses). If the test images was taken when the camera was not mounted on a tripod it might affect the outcome of the picture. (even if very little since it's f1.4). The sony full frame cameras (full line a7 series) offers IBIS, this is also something the a6500 offers but not as good as on the a7 series of cameras.
Dudeius Mannigast i dont think Chris is shooting handheld at low shutterspeed...
Don't worry Dudeius - I know how to take a sharp picture :-)
I bought the Rokinon/Samyang with medium expectations. The image quality is amazing, but after shooting for sometime (30 mins non stop) the autofocus fails. It just doesn’t focus on anything and you literally have to turn the camera off and back on for the AF to work again. I shoot some night photography today and I gotta say it was extremely hard for the autofocus to work how you want. Great lens but but hard to work with.
Hmm, my copy worked just fine
Happened to me with Sigma 30mm 2.8 after hour of shooting it just stopped the after few minutes it started normally.
Can you review the ancient canon 28-70mm f2.8?
No plans to really. I'd like to but there are a whole tonne of new lenses being released at the moment which I should cover first
would you test adapted lenses in the a6300?
Depends which ones.
Your reviews are generally top notch and I appreciate your thoroughness.
There is one failing however, when it comes to Sony E Mount lenses, the auto-focus capability is never mentioned. Specifically, I am talking about whether the lens can function in Face Detection and especially Eye Auto Focus. Some lenses have this capability while others (even with Sony mounts) do not!
Eye AF is one of the prime reasons I purchased the A6500 and many lenses including, but not limited to, the three Sigma DN f/2.8 lenses (designed for Sony APSC e mount cameras) do not have Eye AF capability. This is exceptionally important to me and, I would expect, to other Sony mirrorless camera owners.
Should i buy that lense or just keep the kit one
Up to you! Watch the review and perhaps that will give you some ideas.
FE lens on APS-C... the best part of the lens
Sony lens review!
if with sony fe 85 f1.8 what you chose ?
Depends whether you want a 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8 lens. Personally I prefer 50mm
Christopher Frost Photography thank you
IVAN Fe 85mm 1.8... I just got both yesterday, everything about the 85mm is way way better than the rokinon
You should update your review with Sony ff camera. This lens was designed for ff so go for it !!! ))
Hi Chris, wicht one wo
could you please do some testes for Canon FD lenses?
Bollocks! ;-)
Nope, too hard to adapt them
what is the difference between fe and e mount? can i also use fe for my a6000? And is fe especially for apcs?
It's all one mount - the Sony E-mount. "FE" is just a designation for lenses which will give full covereage on a full-frame E-mount camera
This samyang or Sony 50mm 1.8 OSS?
They're pretty different lenses in a number of ways. Personally if I had just an APS-C camera I'd go for the Sony lens
Thank you :D
You mean the FE sony?
E, not FE
well good day chris and everyone. you will give away some time a lens?
If I had a lot more money then I'd love to!
What about af in video?
You can see that in this review
please review Samyang 12 mm f2.0 for APS-C Sony
I probably will, but not for a few months yet
Christopher Frost Photography great to hear that, will be waiting!
in practice it's around 60mm on apsc
Nope. 75mm
Please review the 16-50 sony kit lens.
Sometime in the future, yes I will
Christopher Frost Photography didn't you get it with the a6300? I keep hearing lots of people say it's terrible, but I need a real review from you to judge that.
Yes, I got it. I'm just a bit busy at the moment
Christopher Frost Photography ahh ok. I'll be waiting for it.
My lens is loosing Contact with My A7II. Both new.
Oh... finally Sony E mount
Christopher, you sound like a gentleman. A rare distinction in the age of pervasive ill-breeding and its ramifications.
That aside, I have a question: have you reviewed a Zeiss Touit 32mm (on either Sony or on Fuji)?
The Fujinon 23mm?
And the Fujinon 90mm F2.0?
Nope, afraid not! I might cover the Zeiss lens sometime
Would love to see how this compares to Fujis new 50mm F2. Seems like a good time for mirrorless shooters to get a new 50!:)
Why would that be interesting? The Fujifilm lens is for X-mount only and this lens is for E-mount only.
This needs an update on a full frame camera
I have always struggle with 50 mm focal lengths and I always find them rather boring
lol during video (auto focus) you are pressing on button for focus :D
Are you aware Chris that creative film makers and photographers use distortion such as 'flare' as a creative tool. If I'm working commercially we look for cool flare effects. If we don't get them they're added in post.
That's why I do the test - for people who want flaring, too
Christopher Frost Photography
I thought as much. You're doing a great job Chris. 👍
Hi Chris.
I think I would pick up a used 55 1.8 for an extra 150 over this.
Or just one of their MF 50mm, or a AIS nikon 50mm
It's bloody massive for a 50mm isn't it??
Yup
