There are holes in the bottom of each leg and corresponding holes in the top of the lower headboard and footboard. The bed comes with 4 steel dowels that drop into the head abd foot board and go up into the upper bunk legs to hold it in place while allowing it to be easily removed.
Hey Janey, thanks for the question. The manufacturer claims capacity of 400 pounds per bed. I would say that number (or even a little higher) is a safe estimate for occasional guest use. 2 guests at 200 each on the bottom full size and 1 guest at 200 on upper twin should be fine. I would probably not recommend going this heavy on an every day regular use. Now from a practical standpoint, two 200 pound people are going to be a little crowded in that full size bed. Additionally, whoever is headed to the top bunk needs to be agile and flexible enough to climb the ladder. You can also remove the top bunk and set it on the floor if you have enough extra space in the room. I hope this helps answer your question. Good luck.

Did you use bunker boards under your 8 inch mattresses?
The bed comes with several support boards but I also layed a 1/4" sheet of hardboard (Masonite) under the entire mattress.
