Fun anecdote about compost bins: I put compost in my grandparents garden a couple of years ago and found two knifes my grandma threw in there with food scarps almost 8ish years before. So moral of the story, buy Solinger knives they will not rust after years in the compost bin and if you’re lucky, you’ll find missing cutlery too!

I love that Alex pretty much perfectly exemplifies the beauty of the cycle of curiosity, leading to learning, leading to attempting, leading to errors, leading to more learning, leading to improving, leading to pride of ownership and acquisition of knowledge! I absolutely feel like the social media has robbed a good portion of the next generation of the enjoyment of going through that cycle for themselves, and instead feeds them whatever the algorithm makers think will get companies the most engagement and ad revenue.
Keep going Alex! You're doing amazing, sir.

I once had a 4 acre small holding for almost 20 years with veg plots, chickens, bees (30 hives), a few pigs, a small orchard and two huge compost heaps, lost it all when my landlord died and his kids sold up, I really miss it all so much, so it's great to watch a young person such as yourself with such passion👍

I’m sorry to have read there.
Sometimes something like this happens tho when someone dies and passes it on to multiple people, they probably had to sell due to splitting it up between them. Probably some needed money and maybe no one knew how to work/ live off the land.
Again I’m so sorry as you have lost it all. Shame you haven’t been able to find somewhere else, but it could happen again… I hope you manage to get somewhere where you can at least garden and maybe have bees. Good luck

Just had a good old laugh at myself - only an hour ago I'd posted a somewhat lengthy comment on one of your earlier gardening videos about the virtues of compost and growing how you would've seen nature doing on your foraging expeditions, and here you are echoing everything back to me! It's wonderful that someone who professes to know so little, knows so much, and obviously does a heap of research - 10/10 and a gold star young man! But the best heat composter is Charles Dowding, u should visit him, he’s the compost king. I love what you’re doing, the bees, the gardening, the cooking, it’s skills that are lost on current youth, you’re doing a great job! I look forward to watching u grow! 🤩 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

You can really make a change on the way the past practices in gardening were done. I have gardened all my life but in the last few years I have learned so much about soil health and no- til gardening. I'm 64 yrs old and I actually think these techniques make planting so much easier. I feel we have come to a time where it is also important to grow some of our own food. Great job Alex. Having a compost pile is a great way to recicle nutricions from waste to grow things. I really apreciate you made a video about this. I do have similiar setup in my garden and it works just gerat. Only thing i did different is screewing all the walls that I wont be moving together leaving wired entrance only. It gives a better stability to overall of construction. Puting a cardbord into a pile also will give earthworms quite a load of celulosis that they will use for cocoons while reproducing so this is also very beneficial. Great job mate!!!

Great Video Alex!!! I've missed your super FUN videos.
Now I just want to hang out and garden with you. Spreading Compost,, tilling it into the native soil, and plant up as much as possible. I love being a Farm to Table Grower, and watching all the lovely food that comes up from little seeds, or stock.
I am embarrassed to say that I have 8 Compost Bins that each are so large I can get the front loader on my John Deere, to scoop out buckets of it at a time, to spread everywhere. Mine are made out of Cement blocks. All 8 bins are in stages of breaking down.
[2] Alex,, you can also make paper compost. I would go nuts without making paper compost. You make it out of cardboard boxes, all kinds of newspapers, all the mail from the post, etc. Anything paper or cardboard is a fantastic organic compost. Any kind of paper we get I run it though a micro paper shredder and in the compost it goes. Super great for houseplants and for seed starting. All foods that come in boxes, papers, etc from the market, I tear it up, shred it, etc. and compost it all. Paper compost is a little more FINE in texture than the vegetation compost.
[3] If the Compost Bins start to get a bit on the smelly side, just sprinkle some sawdust in there and mix it in. You can usually get it free from woodworking /Carpentry shops or Job sites.
[4] Recycling/Upcycling all products is a good thing. Anything that can be reused is a great thing to do for the environment. I've made many things out of Pallets. Benches, tables, and plant stands, and even a garden shed out in one of the fields to keep buckets, shovels, and other tools. It has a Water cooler of fresh spring water to drink if our bottles run empty.
[5] In my 3 fields I also grow Barley, Hops, and Rye for the smaller micro-breweries. The rest of the fields are just Vegetables, fruits and nuts.
It is a great thing to participate in such a POSITIVE appreciation for the Environment while feeding and developing sustainability.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have any farmer/gardening questions. I've been on a farm my entire life and enjoy it so much.
THANK YOU again for the video. Can't wait for the next one.

Ha ha ha ha. 🤣 I could've done with your dad's crowbar over the last couple of days as I was trying to make a compost bin on my allotment out of six of the very strong palates the manure and stuff gets delivered to the trading shed on. Like your reject palate and then some. If I tried breaking them up with a claw hammer the wood splintered, using a normal saw was hopeless because of the nails, and even using a small reciprocating saw took ages and was absurdly exhausting. !!!!!
I'm interested to see that it took someone far younger and fitter than me, armed with the correct sort of crowbar, hours and hours to break up 7? palates, and that you looked really knackered afterwards. It's not just me being feeble! 😁 Maybe I'll buy myself a crowbar.
I will check the pallets to see what markings they've got on them. That bit was very useful indeed. Thanks! 🤗

I used to have a transport business. We only ever used some of the pallets that came in to us to send stuff back out on. We had a ‘pallet man’ that would come around and collect them and pay us 50p per pallet, he then sold them for £3-£5 to other customers.

Super as usual, Alex. I wouldn’t have broken the pallets down myself though… just used as-is with the larger openings facing inwards where you could wedge the cardboard. ❤

You'll probably find that you haven't got enough compost there. It did look well rotted though.
I suggest getting a sieve/riddle to help you make your own fine seed sowing compost. Also worth getting some perlite and vermiculite to help with drainage on your baby plants. Get some quality tools if you haven't got any already (more expensive but buy cheap, buy twice). You don't need many but you'll quickly know what's most important.
Get a bit of wood or a replacement fork/spade handle to use as a dibber in your beds. One more thing, it's so easy to get carried away and sow seeds for EVERYTHING in your first year. Pause and have a look at what you do eat already and pick some things. that fit with the amount of space you have, the climate you're in and your facilities (greenhouse etc). Also remember that a few seed trays soon pot-on to being a lot bigger potted-up plants so try not to overdo it.
Looks like you could use your gardening gloves when doing your bees too.
