I've been passing through this a lot in Nigeria😂. The truth is... if the client is your relative, the client might even request for free tech support and that is very annoying

In my experience (mostly making jewellery) people have no idea whether what they are asking will be easy (and can be done cheaply) or difficult (and will be super expensive)... but it applies to software too. In the same way that you can buy a piece of mass-produced jewellery for way less than a bespoke piece, you can buy off-the-shelf software for way less than it would cost to create a similar item from scratch. So I always tell potential clients: my price depends on exactly what you want, and finding that out is going to require a lengthy discussion, which is a waste of your time as well as mine if your budget won't cover the work... which is why I need to know, before we get into that discussion, whether or not your budget is realistic.
I usually find that after explaining WHY I'm asking, they will come up with some totally unrealistic figure at which point I walk away. :-)

Great video Dennis, thanks for the tactics. I also found it helpful to start by understanding at a high-level what the client needs. Once this is known, I'll provide price range estimate to start the negotiation while also explicitly mentioning that the price depends on the difficulty of the project. Then I'll ask further questions to fine tune the pricing estimate. So far this had worked for me.

It’s all about communication for sure. I see a lot of people miss opportunities simply because they cannot communicate with their clients and get too frustrated.

All it tells me that if you ask me for budget and my budget is high you will adjust your prices so I will never answer your question. Imagine going to buy a house and rather than being given a house prive you are ask how much you want to spend.

I learned a long time ago to never mention my budget until AFTER the seller gives me a price range.
If the job would cost $1000 but you tell the seller you have a budget of $5000, they will take $5000 from you for a $1000 job.

It is different in different industries, but it seems very common in music, where artists are trying to make more based on their clients' available money and clients are trying to get the most value for the money. It often seems opportunistic and cynical, for either side or point of view.
As an example, in construction contracting, you ask subcontractors for a quote, so they give you a quote based on what it really costs them to do the job and how much profit they want to make. They know other subcontractors may underbid them, but they also know the other company also has to make money, so prices can only go so low.
To be fair, you do not go to the grocery store and ask the price of a fruit, just to be told "what is your grocery budget"?
The budget can be a helpful guide to estimate your pricing. If it is a cheap web documentary, you bust out all your VSTs and canned library stuff. If it is a big budget feature, you quote them for original composition and additional live musicians.
One video about this subject just left a very bad taste; the musician in the video is talking about how if he knew how big the client's budget was, he could have squeezed more money out of them.
Ultimately, it is about supply and demand. Be brave, tell them how much your work is worth, and if they do not want to pay that much, they move on. They can find someone else, and you will find another client.
This also brings up the thought about labor unions, it does not matter what the size of the contract is, whatever the prevailing wage is legislated, the laborers get that much. Laborers on a skyscraper project do not get paid a percentage of the construction contract.

I learned a long time ago to never mention my budget until AFTER the seller gives me a price range.
If the job would cost $1000 but you tell the seller you have a budget of $5000, they will absolutely take $5000 from you for a $1000 job.
Telling your budget first is a very quick way to get scammed / overcharged.

How to ideally decide price of a website specially in django

    • @DennisIvy
      @DennisIvy  3 роки тому +2

There’s a lot that goes into it. If you’re just starting, learn how to estimate the length of projects and figure out what that price might look like with your rate multiplied by the time it takes to complete it. This takes practice + experience.
