I'm a bit surprised that there was a hail cloud above their heads, because from what Mirabel says, the more negative the emotion, the more intense the weather. Hence the cyclone surrounding her when she stressed about Antonio's ceremony and the hurricane on their wedding day. And last I checked, hail is not a pleasant experience. It hurts, it causes damage, and the size of those hailstones can vary from the size of a pea to the size of a fist. But you can clearly see her and her husband dancing in that hail storm with smiles on their faces. Bruno said that she can feel whatever she feels, but her weather is still affected by her mood. (Luisa may shrug it off as if she was just caught in a kids' snowball fight, but it's no picnic for everyone else.)
I always saw Pepa’s Rain cloud at the end of the movie to be a symbol of her finally being able to express her emotions which actually allows her to control them.
People made connections with the triplets and mirabel and her sisters. Isabella and Pepa which tend to have to be perfect. Pepa usually being seen trying to change her storms instead of dealing with them and even getting criticized if she starts clouding up seen by abuela similar to isabella who tends to hide her emotions and does what she thinks is best for the family. Luisa and Julieta because both are strong and tend to bear all the weight. You see Julieta stand up to Abuela the most and Luisa is just holding onto the family and trying to keep it strong. And lastly the obvious Bruno and Mirabel. Both are outcasts in their own home because of some difference. Mirabel’s lack of a gift and Bruno’s gift being very unnerving to people. Idky I brought this up but I guess my original intention was to connect the symbolism of pepa? I definitely see her being able to dance in the hail storm is as you said. Her being able to freely express her emotion without being criticized and being able to manage them instead of simply avoiding it and trying to be perfect.
i see it as she doesn't seen hail as an inherently bad thing anymore, she grows to like all weather so they all become something for when she is happy, which makes her less anxious
Felix calming her down is SO sweet! I kind of see Pepa's power as a symbol for anxiety, so it's so nice to see someone (Felix) try to help her calm down :')
I love this character so far,because she has to control one of the hardest thing to control which is her emotion to keep encanto's weather in the good condition. She has to work hard all the time and she loves everyone in her family as well.
@jf k I think Isabella has quite a powerful ability too, she already has so much control over her plants and we don’t know the range that she can grow them (plus it seems like she can grow any plants, possibly including the most dangerous, poisonous ones in the world). I think Dolores probably has the weakest gift, since it doesn’t cover anything for combat.

A detail I love is that throughout the entire beginning of Bruno’s song, Felix is making it a CLEAR fact that despite the weather he absolutely enjoyed the day of their wedding and looks at it as a “joyous day” he was just happy to be married to Pepe? He doesn’t just calm her down, he comforts her and adores how emotive she is? it’s an incredibly loving and pure relationship???
This is why this movie should just be expanded into a series. There's so much potential in these characters and their relationships. I know, "don't milk the series" and "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but c'mon now
Why does part of me feel like she really didn't learn how to cope with her emotions. Like seriously, every time she weathers around her mother she just says something about the cloud or to "Calm down". When she was in the nursey she kind of just pushed the cloud away, kind of like ignoring how she's feeling. No wonder why she's so anxious. Idk maybe I'm looking too deep into this Also Camillo is very sweet. Like seriously, the boy is there comforting his mom with a cup of tea. How cute is that?
The cloud in the nursey is because she was startled. She does control her emotions, I'm pretty sure she can start a tornado if she was truly out of control. She acts like a typical Latina mother to me.
I don't think it was a mistake that in The Family Madrigal song, we see Pepa dancing in front of a corn field. If she doesn't think positive and vent regularly, she could damage more than her own mental health.
Poor Pepa she became neurotic from her power having to bottle up her emotions like that! she can't easily "Let it go" because she never given the opportunity. For me I need to work through my emotions I can't easily let it go or make clear skies. I like how supportive Felix and the rest of her family is minus Abuela. 1:44 Calm down?! Really she is allowed to be upset and Felix has her back he knows how hard it is for his wife and has his niece's back. No Spoilers but When near the end of the video u can see she worked on herself and able to work through it as did the rest of the family
You know after seeing the backstory of Alma and the older townspeople/villagers and how powerful some of the gifted could be you could say of the 8 gifts could be used to not only help the people but also also be used as defensive and offensive against those that would attack them again. Example Bruno's gift to see into the future would be defensive as he could look into the future and see if there was an attack coming. Pepa's gift to control the weather as both offensive and defensive, by using rain and snow and wind and lightning to go against the attackers as well as helpful in keeping the weather good to help grow plants. Julieta's gift to help heal those that got hurt if the attackers got through. Isabela's gift of creating/controlling plants both as defensive, offensive and helpful to the villagers in that she could cause plants with different foods to grow, and as for defensive and offensive well she could grow plants to prevent anyone from getting into the valley and to attack the attackers. Dolores' gift of hearing used to listen for people who would want to cause harm and warn everyone to be quiet. Luisa's gift of strength she could create barriers to stop anyone from getting into the valley and throw boulders at the attackers. Camilo's gift well apart from helping the villagers as was seen well he could change into the lead attacker and send the others off in a different direction. That being said Antonio's gift could also be used in defense and offense as he could have the animals warn if they see any of the ones that would attack them and offensive in having the animals defend them.
Given the circumstances from how the miracle was received it could be inferred that the gifts did serve that purpose if they came in danger once more but seeing how the movie played it it’s safe to say that they most likely use it for bettering their town
Healthy relationships in Disney is something people should pay attention to because it's really sweet how Pepa and Julietta husband's coincidence with their abilities. Pepas husband helps her calm down and sometimes encourages her to let the storm pass which is really sweet, and then Julietta husband is accident prone which means he's always their trying out her dishes which is cute. Even the way he tries and plays it off is adorable, I love them.
If Pepa was like this during the movie, trying to keep her emotions in control I can only imagine what she had to go through when she had 3 kids, now THAT'S one of the hardest times to keep your emotions in check

I love how in We Don't Talk about Bruno, Pepa's like "married in a hurricane" and Felix is like- "What a joyous day but anyway" Like he is just so in love with her that he was happy to be married that even the sour weather (That she controls) couldn't sway his emotions of happiness to be with the woman he adores. If he doesn't love me like Felix, I don't want him.
I want a short exploring the rooms! I imagine Julieta might have a test kitchen, Pepa might have a room that changes with her mood like a beach when she's happy, or a forest when she's upset, etc. I can't imagine what Dolores' room might look like. And I am curious if Abuela has a super magical room too, or a more normal one like Mirabel
Agreed, they got so much potential for any series or short continuations, either a prequel series exploring the youth or growth of the other characters, or a sequel series exploring the Madrigals after the movie.

I feel like Pepa gets a lot of crap for blaming Bruno cause he 'ruined her wedding' but she really can't control her powers especially when it's tied to her emotions. Blaming Bruno for singlehandedly ruining her wedding wasn't ok but weddings are extremely stressful and he really should have known better than to make a weather joke to his already neurotic sister even if he did have good intentions. Pepa already seems to have anxiety issues and people expect her to be happy 24/7 is tough.

She thought it was vision and got stressed losing control of her power( in her eyes he put the idea in her head that bad weather was coming and because she thought it was a future vision, then it was unavoidable)

The scene with her pacing in circles, causing a hurricane of wind is such a beautiful, well-composed shot. And very Gabo, straight out of his writing almost.
Pepa has the perfect character design... Look at her model, she looks like the one who would usually be the sun of the family, always happy and cheerful, her design says that but her actitud just shows that she tries to be a sun ti the family but her powers (over everything else) really stress her out as she needs to stay good and happy to keep her family safe, which means she has to fake how she feels constantly which reflects on her model, her smile reminds you of a summer afternoon, but her eyes tell the story of a thousand stormy nights.
I always wondered what her room looked like but the way she pushes the cloud out ( 0:37 ) makes me wonder if her room is full of clouds that just comes out depending of her mood
Id imagine her room would be full of clouds which represents her gift of weather controlling. But also the clouds are a representation of her being calm. And whenever shes unhappy the clouds just become darker or go away

Someone pointed out that when she’s angry it thunders, when she stressed she causes a tornado, and when she’s sad it rains. So when meribel starts talking about Bruno in depth and it raining, Pepa was actually sad
Given what we find out about family pressure, it does make me wonder how Julieta and Pepa felt growing up and needing to fill expectations. We can already assume Bruno got the worst of it, but given Pepa’s unpredictability, she probably didnt have a good time either. I’d like to think that Felix was the one who finally got her to calm down or at least gain control of herself.
The fact Peppa is seen throwing the clouds away and straight up told by Abuela to "Calm down" makes me think the expectations put upon her were to ALWAYS be happy no matter what, causing her to push her emotions away instead of dealing with them in a healthy way
I’ve noticed that Felix actually tries to help get rid of Pepa’s cloud rather than just telling her “You have a cloud, get rid of it yourself” like Abuela does. Whenever Felix is around, her cloud either naturally dissolves or he helps her shoo it away, and he totally doesn’t mind her forming a cloud when necessary (like at the dinner table, he probably knew she’d be stressed with the news but he felt like he had to tell her)
K, but may favorite part of the entire movie is after “maybe your power is being in denial” and your can hear pepa faintly say “I made a rainbow!” Because she just has! She also does one in the family picture
A Colombian here, we don't know either, we just put nicknames like that, my grandparent's name was Efraín and we called him Pacho, and I had aunt that was called Josefina and my grandpa called her 'Pata de cama'. I don't think we follow a logic lmao
I think Pepa's gift is like the worst one. I mean, nobody talks about it being such a burden. I understand it that her mood affects the weather in *whole* Encanto. It's alot of responsibility. She basically it's not allowed to feel certain things in certain times. Yes, it's great she got emotions under control in the end, but nobody can 100% control them. Sudden scare or bad news and boom - there's rain. Hard gift to bear.
So my two cents here because each is a different subject. 1- I love how pepa is the first character that clearly demonstrates how stressed out the Abuela gets her AND openly confronts her all the time instead of just walking on eggshells and hiding emotions like everyone else. 2- Camilo didn't get startled nor hit himself on the wood before shapeshifting randomly . HE TOOK LIGHTNING TO HIS FACE. That oughta both hurt and mess his brain at the same time. But still so lovely him taking care of his mom
Whats interesting to note is that we can see Abuela often times telling Pepa to get rid of her clouds rather than helping her work through her emotions. Basically Abuela is telling Pepa to shut down her feelings, which can cause the feelings she does have to feel much more intense, which makes the weather more intense. Felix provides a good counter balance by trying to help Pepa express emotions in a balanced and healthy way, by telling her its ok to have these emotions and working with her to express them in a healthy way. As a result, when bad weather does spring up, it's not as intense, so rather it being golf ball sized hail, it turns into small hail you can dance in!
I really adore Pepa's animation, her facial expressions are a flippin delight, and over the top that it fits her perfectly. It makes sense too, i mean can you imagine getting rained on or electrocuted every few seconds during your day if you're not bouncy off walls happy? I'd get freakish about it too, she has her coping mechanisms, such as her husband, and her clear skies thingy which I really like and almost makes her seem a little unhinged, but shes really just trying her best. Having your emotions on display would make you rather vunrable and it would be crazy, which only ties all she is into one adorable yellow dress and awesome eyebrows. I love her character
1) I know how she felt, having to hold in all of your emotions even though you are close to a break down. 2) I'm so happy she can feel what she feels and express it and it still be okay and special. 3) ... Never pause a disney movie. I caught some weird frames LOL

There's a moment later on when she finally tells off Abuela "YOU'RE LUCKY THIS ISN'T A HURRICANE!" And Abuella had this shocked look on her face as everything was turning to chaos around her. I love Pepa.

The look of concern on her face when she accidently zaps Camillo, I feel bad for Pepe. Not being able to express her emotions with causing complete chaos. She can't hide her emotions either, so if she is angry EVERYBODY would know.
Maybe the house also gave them an increased lifespan or better health? Maybe Maribel's mom's gift has some unintended anti-aging properties. Could make for a cool bit of world-building.
i think her powers represent far more than being a hidden metaphor for the present. We see a journey of acceptance in her emotions, allowing herself to feel rather than hide, discard, dismiss or overthink how she feels. A lot of women, especially in Latin America, are taught to be calm, rational, never let emotions dictate you, to hide how you feel and push yourself to care for others. Throughout the film, we see Isabella realise perfection should be a marker of identity and value, that Louisa shouldn’t have to carry the burden of being the strong, eldest daughter, and Pepa- she doesn’t need to hide her emotions to be happy, she clearly takes control of what would be a ‘negative’ weather condition (the hailing) at the end of the movie and finds joy in it. that’s what i think at least

Honestly I find her ability one of the most troublesome and stressful ones. Imagine if you were stressed from work and then the whole village becomes a rainy day. And u cant do anything about it but calm tf down since it all lies on your emotions so u have no full control over it. I can imagine the consecutive rainy days on the village from her 9 month pregnancies and heavy typhoons and lightning when she gave birth 3 times lmao

As someone with a girlfriend that's easily stressed out just like Pepa, Felix is who I strive to be in our relationship. I used to be a nervous wreck too which is why I pride myself on comforting people and diffusing stressful situations. I love my girl. Im proposing next year after three years together. And I do what I can to make her life less stressful.
Ok but I LOVE the detail of when the cloud suddenly struck lightning on Camilo, you can see that Pepa's bangs were floating upward from the static. Like UGH the attention to detail on such a little scene added so much life.
I love the little details especially with Pepa. She shows how unhealthy it is to keep your emotions bottled up. She is constantly having to keep her emotions under control in order to please Abuela, but because she can’t properly express them she is an emotional wreck. The moment she seems most at peace is when she is making it hail.
Felix is such a wonderful husband. Not once in the entire movie does he chastise her whenever her mood is being inconvenient for everyone else and every time she is upset he can easily calm her down. He really loves his wife and doesn't mind her mood swings changing the weather (even on their wedding day), he actually wants her to freely express her emotions like a normal human being. Such a great character!
honestly out of both Julieta's relationship with Agustin and Pepa's with Felix, I love Pepa's and Felix;s a little more. Don't get me wrong they are both cute, but I love how Felix is trying to help Pepa. He is supporting her and helping her. In there wedding he still said it was a joyous day even though the weather turned into a hurricane. You can just hear how much he loves her.
Felix being such a helpful and loving husband to Pepa is such a sight. You can tell he knew what he was in for when he married her and it shows. In the scene Pepa has a snow cloud and Abuela tells Pepa to calm and she tells she is trying, Felix nods in agreement and he is visibly upset; it is a great contrast between his understanding of his wife's character and Abuela Alma's ignorance of it. And the best is: it bleeds into their children. Camillo is very caring, trying to calm down his mother and worrying about his brother Antonio after they lose their powers; Antonio himself always seems to have an eye on Mirabel during her quest, trying to help and protect her in the adventure; Dolores also is there there for Abuela once the house falls down and doesn't seem to really have many criticisms of her uncle Bruno in the song we all know, just that he was a bit weird and scared her. It is not only a great way to flesh out their characters, but also tells a story of how Felix's supportive behavior influenced his kids for good. It's not everyday a movie is so sharp when it comes to characters and their stories and I love this movie for it.
Tia Pepa is so relatable! Her mood being expressed by the weather was a clever idea to describe her feelings as a mother, sister and aunt! She is one of my favorite characters in Encanto!

Why does part of me feel like she really didn't learn how to cope with her emotions. Like seriously, every time she weathers around her mother she just says something about the cloud or to "Calm down". When she was in the nursey she kind of just pushed the cloud away, kind of like ignoring how she's feeling. No wonder why she's so anxious. Idk maybe I'm looking too deep into this

You know after seeing the backstory of Alma and the older townspeople/villagers and how powerful some of the gifted could be you could say of the 8 gifts could be used to not only help the people but also also be used as defensive and offensive against those that would attack them again. Example Bruno's gift to see into the future would be defensive as he could look into the future and see if there was an attack coming. Pepa's gift to control the weather as both offensive and defensive, by using rain and snow and wind and lightning to go against the attackers as well as helpful in keeping the weather good to help grow plants. Julieta's gift to help heal those that got hurt if the attackers got through. Isabela's gift of creating/controlling plants both as defensive, offensive and helpful to the villagers in that she could cause plants with different foods to grow, and as for defensive and offensive well she could grow plants to prevent anyone from getting into the valley and to attack the attackers. Dolores' gift of hearing used to listen for people who would want to cause harm and warn everyone to be quiet. Luisa's gift of strength she could create barriers to stop anyone from getting into the valley and throw boulders at the attackers. Camilo's gift well apart from helping the villagers as was seen well he could change into the lead attacker and send the others off in a different direction. That being said Antonio's gift could also be used in defense and offense as he could have the animals warn if they see any of the ones that would attack them and offensive in having the animals defend them.

Healthy relationships in Disney is something people should pay attention to because it's really sweet how Pepa and Julietta husband's coincidence with their abilities. Pepas husband helps her calm down and sometimes encourages her to let the storm pass which is really sweet, and then Julietta husband is accident prone which means he's always their trying out her dishes which is cute. Even the way he tries and plays it off is adorable, I love them.

I feel like Pepa gets a lot of crap for blaming Bruno cause he 'ruined her wedding' but she really can't control her powers especially when it's tied to her emotions. Blaming Bruno for singlehandedly ruining her wedding wasn't ok but weddings are extremely stressful and he really should have known better than to make a weather joke to his already neurotic sister even if he did have good intentions. Pepa already seems to have anxiety issues and people expect her to be happy 24/7 is tough.

Pepa has the perfect character design... Look at her model, she looks like the one who would usually be the sun of the family, always happy and cheerful, her design says that but her actitud just shows that she tries to be a sun ti the family but her powers (over everything else) really stress her out as she needs to stay good and happy to keep her family safe, which means she has to fake how she feels constantly which reflects on her model, her smile reminds you of a summer afternoon, but her eyes tell the story of a thousand stormy nights.
I always wondered what her room looked like but the way she pushes the cloud out ( 0:37 ) makes me wonder if her room is full of clouds that just comes out depending of her mood
Id imagine her room would be full of clouds which represents her gift of weather controlling. But also the clouds are a representation of her being calm. And whenever shes unhappy the clouds just become darker or go away

Given what we find out about family pressure, it does make me wonder how Julieta and Pepa felt growing up and needing to fill expectations. We can already assume Bruno got the worst of it, but given Pepa’s unpredictability, she probably didnt have a good time either.

The fact Peppa is seen throwing the clouds away and straight up told by Abuela to "Calm down" makes me think the expectations put upon her were to ALWAYS be happy no matter what, causing her to push her emotions away instead of dealing with them in a healthy way

I’ve noticed that Felix actually tries to help get rid of Pepa’s cloud rather than just telling her “You have a cloud, get rid of it yourself” like Abuela does. Whenever Felix is around, her cloud either naturally dissolves or he helps her shoo it away, and he totally doesn’t mind her forming a cloud when necessary (like at the dinner table, he probably knew she’d be stressed with the news but he felt like he had to tell her)
K, but may favorite part of the entire movie is after “maybe your power is being in denial” and your can hear pepa faintly say “I made a rainbow!” Because she just has! She also does one in the family picture

I think Pepa's gift is like the worst one. I mean, nobody talks about it being such a burden. I understand it that her mood affects the weather in *whole* Encanto. It's alot of responsibility. She basically it's not allowed to feel certain things in certain times. Yes, it's great she got emotions under control in the end, but nobody can 100% control them. Sudden scare or bad news and boom - there's rain. Hard gift to bear.
So my two cents here because each is a different subject.
1- I love how pepa is the first character that clearly demonstrates how stressed out the Abuela gets her AND openly confronts her all the time instead of just walking on eggshells and hiding emotions like everyone else.
2- Camilo didn't get startled nor hit himself on the wood before shapeshifting randomly . HE TOOK LIGHTNING TO HIS FACE. That oughta both hurt and mess his brain at the same time. But still so lovely him taking care of his mom
Whats interesting to note is that we can see Abuela often times telling Pepa to get rid of her clouds rather than helping her work through her emotions. Basically Abuela is telling Pepa to shut down her feelings, which can cause the feelings she does have to feel much more intense, which makes the weather more intense. Felix provides a good counter balance by trying to help Pepa express emotions in a balanced and healthy way, by telling her its ok to have these emotions and working with her to express them in a healthy way. As a result, when bad weather does spring up, it's not as intense, so rather it being golf ball sized hail, it turns into small hail you can dance in!

I really adore Pepa's animation, her facial expressions are a flippin delight, and over the top that it fits her perfectly. It makes sense too, i mean can you imagine getting rained on or electrocuted every few seconds during your day if you're not bouncy off walls happy? I'd get freakish about it too, she has her coping mechanisms, such as her husband, and her clear skies thingy which I really like and almost makes her seem a little unhinged, but shes really just trying her best. Having your emotions on display would make you rather vunrable and it would be crazy, which only ties all she is into one adorable yellow dress and awesome eyebrows. I love her character

It's such a big responsibility to be Pepa, you must always have a happy mood otherwise the weather is going to reflect a bad mood.
There's a moment later on when she finally tells off Abuela "YOU'RE LUCKY THIS ISN'T A HURRICANE!" And Abuella had this shocked look on her face as everything was turning to chaos around her. I love Pepa.

i think her powers represent far more than being a hidden metaphor for the present. We see a journey of acceptance in her emotions, allowing herself to feel rather than hide, discard, dismiss or overthink how she feels. A lot of women, especially in Latin America, are taught to be calm, rational, never let emotions dictate you, to hide how you feel and push yourself to care for others. Throughout the film, we see Isabella realise perfection should be a marker of identity and value, that Louisa shouldn’t have to carry the burden of being the strong, eldest daughter, and Pepa- she doesn’t need to hide her emotions to be happy, she clearly takes control of what would be a ‘negative’ weather condition (the hailing) at the end of the movie and finds joy in it. that’s what i think at least

I love how Pepa has that crazy look like she’d be your average Disney villainess but she’s just an intense human and relatable character.
As someone with a girlfriend that's easily stressed out just like Pepa, Felix is who I strive to be in our relationship. I used to be a nervous wreck too which is why I pride myself on comforting people and diffusing stressful situations.

I love the little details especially with Pepa. She shows how unhealthy it is to keep your emotions bottled up. She is constantly having to keep her emotions under control in order to please Abuela, but because she can’t properly express them she is an emotional wreck. In the scene Pepa has a snow cloud and Abuela tells Pepa to calm and she tells she is trying, Felix nods in agreement and he is visibly upset; it is a great contrast between his understanding of his wife's character and Abuela Alma's ignorance of it.
And the best is: it bleeds into their children. Camillo is very caring, trying to calm down his mother and worrying about his brother Antonio after they lose their powers; Antonio himself always seems to have an eye on Mirabel during her quest, trying to help and protect her in the adventure; Dolores also is there there for Abuela once the house falls down and doesn't seem to really have many criticisms of her uncle Bruno in the song we all know, just that he was a bit weird and scared her. It is not only a great way to flesh out their characters, but also tells a story of how Felix's supportive behavior influenced his kids for good.
It's not everyday a movie is so sharp when it comes to characters and their stories and I love this movie for it.

Tia Pepa is so relatable! Her mood being expressed by the weather was a clever idea to describe her feelings as a mother, sister and aunt! She is one of my favorite characters in Encanto!
