You are probably well aware of this, but I think it's worth pointing out that the build quality of Shure's headphones needs to be proven with this new series, given how very well known it is that the SRH940 and related non-A models experience frequent headband breaks.

    • @Jason75913

All except the SRH840, it looks to me like that one probably came out _unintentionally_ more durable. Not the best in its class, but far better than every other full-sized can they make that isn't SRH1440 and 1540.

@@metal571 440 not breaking? I'm impressed, actually, I used to see broken ones on eBay pretty often, and I've been told they are fragile
I bought a broken one just to get acquainted with the sound at a big discount some years back, then I later removed the drivers and installed them in a broken Creative Aurvana Live! that I couldn't repair, the CAL! had a dead driver. Fun little project, I still have that "Shure Aurvana Live!", it sounds really good.

awesome review. i've heard a lot of fellow electronic music listeners using shures because of the good bass. ive been looking for closed headphones with actual subbass for affordable money (no more than $200). the 840s definitely are definitely in my wheelhouse

I got the 840a recently and like it a lot. I did change the pads to Dekoni Velour Shure-specific pads, which cut the high treble a bit and are more comfortable, plus the timbre improved. I love the lack of grain in the treble at this price. I do have the K371 as a reference. The 840a is very basic headphone, but very good at this price, but I think only with the pad swap would I for "SHURE" recommend it.

I decided to give these a shot after this review for gaming because I wanted the audio quality and don’t chat during my gaming sessions. With my sound blaster AE-7 these things sing. There’s plenty of bass without being overwhelming. And the mids and highs are in full force too. I’m love the V shape sound. These might be the best I’ve own. I think Shure put the focus where it belongs in the drivers. Not that the comfort is lacking they feel good. But I take great sound with plastic any day as long as it holds up. Sound is subjective. But I would try these you might like them.

I also just tried these with the ZMF Universe Solid Hybrid pads. They fit around the outside of the cups, but fit well that way. With the ZMFs, the mid-bass is reduced, but the sub-bass is maintained. Still V-shaped, but a "wider" V-shape. Wish I had a measurement rig, but anyway, unless you're completely averse to bass, I think these headphones are worth experimenting with, particularly because the treble has no grain or sibilance. And, they are almost certainly going to be more rugged than the K371. Hard to pad roll on the K371 as well. Overall I'm happy with the purchase.

What about the older, "non-A" SRH-440? Crinacle described it as "the closest thing to Harman thus far" and metal571 described it as neutral and flat. So I'm surprised DMS finds the SRH440A so "boomy" and V-shaped. Are the two models so different?

I mean that is what it's called but the cause of it is not following the 1/2 shutter speed rule for video making. Would you guys consider doing a headphone round up/comparison within a certain price range of use case?
For example you could do closed back headphones around £50 - £150 for enjoyment or professional use or open backs around £300 - £400.
I know logistics and the time/effort would make it a harder video to make but it would be interesting to see the comparison of popular or hidden gems with a similar price bracket and use case.

The much applauded k361/k371 is not even close to neutral either. The treble is all over the place with a massive dip around 3-4 and a weird spike further up that, I presume, is why the low mid sounds extremely hollow making the whole can sound thin and weak. It sounds analytical, but not good. The only neutral part of it is the bass. It's probably good for checking a specific range but definitely not good for mixing either.
The shure is a monitoring can where the airiness makes sense. It's not meant to be a can worn at the desk. It's for tracking.
There's nothing wrong with a V shaped sound signature in professional use, that's a misconception. DT770 is V shaped and everyone and their mom wears them. HD600 doesn't have low bass whatsoever yet it's a classic because it does other things well. It's a matter of knowing your headphones. There is no headphone that you should use as a reference. The reference is in your head and you use reference tracks for that.

I brought the Shure 440a and I must say that the build quality is really bad. I broke mine because of my big head after around 1.5 months of using the headphone. Considering the price it was not really a good deal but maybe for smaller head it will better.

I hear you repeatedly saying "Shure has been making headphones for a LONG time" (emphasis yours). I'm having trouble finding any kind of factual information about how long Shure Bros have been making headphones. I was in the Hollywood studios in the 60s and 70s and I have never seen a pair of Shure headphones on any engineer's (or talent's) head. Do you have any kind of reference to that cites the history of Shure cans?

Not bad. Personally, removing mid bass (200Hz to 125-ish) and treble (4k and up) bloat by 4-5 dB reduction kills the life in music.
2-3 dB of said regions might be enough apart from the need to knock sub down by 5 dB.

The problem with DMS here is what causes most people to flock to certain brands because some popular person uses it or recommend it, without the people really looking at the reality.
Everybody raving about HD600 but here is the problem, when it comes to mixing, which is the greatest speakers of all times, is it not the Yamaha NS10?, yes but they were not even studio monitors. and were not flat at all.
But all the mixes done on it translate greatly.
Now with HD600 which many praise as the God of reference.
the SRH has the exact same frequency, but where the HD 600 falls off without just there The SRH 840A kind of corrected it, raised.
Also where it rolls off the treble, and there the 840A raised them.mmmmm
Now that is perfect, but people have these folly that is must be flat to be for studio use, without realizing what we do in studios.
We look for stuffs to fix and stuffs to beautify.
Now if you mix with a headphone with little or roll off bass, you will be tempted to add more till you feel the bass, but you hear that mix in most speakers, it will turn out too much...hmmmm so go your theoritcal flat reference monitor.
Also in the high frequency if there was a slight sibilance in a vocal, a slightly harsh shakers, it would sound fine, but maybe other speaker system which rarely roll off highs like that, it will be harsh like a bad recording.
So you see why practicality beats just theoritical speaking.
if it has enough bass yes you better off having not too much, and not too much high because your monitors system almost maxed out in the high, yes you could have mix less bright but that is better than mix too bright.
So you need to know what happens during mixing, than just saying...studio need a flat response.
studios maybe a reference monitoring system to check something if everything is neutral as it really is, if you have over done or under done something.
That is why you check in other system or even use reference tracks.
To me if only there was a little more mid range would be perfect with the 840A but none these headphone are perfect, in the a flat response ruler flat is actually wrong in real life. hence the Haman s curve is the natural neutral but its never flat.
This is why music gets worse and bad today, still till now their are 10 headphones better than 20 years headphone because people dont look at reality, they look at specs or fluff response and theory that little bearing with reality.
To me this is best headphone SRH80 and I can learn its sound easy.
all these sound stage people talk about will make what you hear a little distance which will mask what you want to hear clearly and adjust things or add effects the perfect way if it was close.
Use cross feed left to right and vice verse to get a speaker like experience and a closeback headphone is great enough.
No open back gonna give you a speaker like listenning experience.
The world is full of folly of people when it comes to what is good, they all just follow a crowd.
Look at the sony mdr 1706 many say they are horrible, but just because sheeple see it every studio he automatical think it must be wonderful.
This is how we all been lied to that Earth is a ball water and land flting through space and also spinning at the time like right now, 666 thousand miles per hour.
And I believed it, till I did serious research and behold, what a big fat huge lie.
People living in lies and illusions and really thinking they live in reality of truth.
How come there is no headphone that perfect, why is it so hard to make.....with all the technology.....only the older things are till better.
Nuff said. wake up people wake up

No, no, and no. This is the newer production run. You get the NON-A older version.
I assume they added the " A " for a reason. This is tuned differently and you're led to believe that this is the same headphones as the original run. It's not judging from your description alone.

Dude, they're reviewing the A because it's a new headphone that just came out and there are no other reviews on it. Why would they review the non-A versions which everyone knows about, which there are plenty of reviews and is decades old, he's basically implying that the non-A version is still better. It doesn't mean you can't review a new headphone that sounds worse. We want to know.

    • @JStefanA

@@miks_w8945 Shure should've named it differently.
Just look at what Sony did with the MDR-7506 and the MDR-CD900ST.
Essentially the same, but sold differently because of the difference in tuning. These A ones destroy the reputation of the SRH 840. I guess Shure thought the A would suffice. But Shure Should have approached it differently.
DMS on his part should have also had a non-A version with him.
I'm SHURE glad as hell I didn't do a blind buy to replace my aging SRH840
