@xom400 the power amp is the last step in the amplification process before the speakers. you can plug this pedal directly into a speaker cabinet as long as the amp can handle the specifics of this pedal. it would have to be an 8 ohm cabinet i believe.
It'll have a little trouble really pushing a 4x12, depending on the wattage of speakers you have in there. You'll definitely have to crank it a bit running into a 4x12 to get gig volume. But right now I've got it running into a custom 2x12 with 50 watt speakers, and it gets plenty loud. I don't have to crank it as hard with the two lower-wattage speakers, and I get great volume, and great clean tone.
If you plugged your guitar straight into the fx loop return (direct to power section) on any amp it would sound darker like that too cause there's no preamp section, he only uses a preamp in the later part of the video
It´s a reallly tiny and surprisingly light power amp. I use with the AMT V1 as pre amp and a 1x12'' cabinet. By the whay, the AMT Legend Series has great amp simulations with a lot of possibilities. Nice demo! Thanks.
Just a note: Looks like TTK accidentally took an out from the CAB SIM out of the B1. (He's plugged it into the top out. The bottom out is the one you want to use with the power amp. The top one has cab sim.) It sounds super killer with the preamp out into a power amp. I have an E1 and the 44 mag.
@xom400 A power amp is just the volume, sound producing, part of a amp, for the most part. The preamp is where the tone comes from, mostly. Your Peavey has 15 watts that the poweramp produces while your tone and amp models come from the preamp, a dsp one at that. -PK
@plinkytx You need at least 8ohms, 16 will work but ideal is 8ohms. If you already have a 2x12, look up stereo speaker wiring, do it and your speaker cab will run at 16 ohms, which is safe for the EH. Another option is dummy load or weber ohm matcher. -PK
@diabeticmonkey he does. when vht changed it's name to fryette, a new company called vht started; they're a different company from fryette/old vht. the special 6 is one of the new vht's amps
They should make a smaller version for bedroom practicing and call it the 30-06! With a switch for 30 and 6 watts... just an idea. I love that "Plexi" power tube saturation!
Ok... i dont understand what power amps do (from what i can tell is they will boost the power of a amp)...so if i put my peavy vypyr 15 watt amp through this then this through my 4X12 cab will it be gigable
Nice review. I just bought this bad johnny to use with my Grindstein. Apparently, the EVH 5153 line of amps dont have master volumes, therefore the preamp pedals in the loop are LOOOUUUUUD. Unusable even. This should work nicely though.
@xom400 No it will damage one if not both amps because the input of the EH is not a load bearing one, if the amp had a slave out you could do this. It would be better to buy the Magnum and a multieffects unit then put the Magnum into a 4x12. The Peavey you have is somewhat gigable if it is miked. If the Peavey has a speaker out or a way to connect itself with another speaker cab like a 4x12 the overall volume will increase do to more air getting pushed. -PK
i have a soldano sp77 connected di to my sound card focusrite. When I turn up the preamp button on it, i just listen noise, that increase with turning up the preamp button. It's a problem. Could be useful to me getting one of these power amps to solve my problem ? thanks if someone will answer to my question.
In the event i don't have an amp (or preamp) or mine breaks down, obviously an electric straight into a PA will sound like garbage. So I'm asking if this pedal works going right into the PA, the idea being that this will simulate the signal going through a guitar amp.
Nice Review!!!! You should checkout the VHT Amp Special 6 and maybe the Special 6 Ultra. They seem to be a bargain. And I don´t mean Freyette, I mean the Chinese build VHT´s.
+jarne vreys From experience, in a rehearsal room with 'hit it like you're trying to kill it' for a drummer, bass and lead guitar all going off, it more than held its own.
+jarne vreys I use a behringer [1] VT999 as a front end . Through the 1x12", it sort of becomes a modular, very loud Micro Terror but with effective 3 band EQ and noise gate. I tried running into the front of my Hotone Purple Wind, then using the FX send into the Magnum. Delicious but unwieldy. [1] Replace the 12ax7 with a 12au7 and this is a very good pedal indeed, despite the name for some.
I have a Fender Bassman 100 watt. the cab is tall (about as tall as I am) I want to use this so i can use amplitube and my tech 21 California preamp with my bassman cabinet. the only thing i worry about is, is this pedal strong enough to work with my large cabinet in a band or live setting?
Is there any way of putting this after a Champ 600 (5 watt amp) to a cabinet, without messing with the champ tone? Just to give the champ more volume, 'cause i love my champ tone but i want to play with it in higher volumes...
This reviewer accidentally answered my question about the 44 Magnum; is it a true power amp that will cleanly amplify what I put into it without coloring it, or is it a 44 watt distortion pedal, and the answer is clear.
I have a question. I bought a nice old "His Masters Voice" Radio case that's just begging to be turned into a retro amp. I was wondering if I could use the guts from a Magnum pedal via a simple reverb pedal as an amp. It still has the old speaker in it or I have a nice Cambridge works 4ohm speaker. Would this work do you think? Obviously a valve amp would be plush, but that's beyond my electronics knowledge. Any thoughts anyone? Cheers Gary
+SONGSTICKS Neat idea. A one knob combo amp that screams. Note that it does kick serious firepower, so whatever speaker you choose should be able to cope with 25Wrms/50Wpeak[1] and it does need to be 8ohms. EHX specify 8-16ohms, but some suppliers advertise it as 4-16. They stutter/fart out/cut out at 4ohms when driven. Well, mine did until I made a serial connector. I was using the cab link, which is parallel. The serial link made the cabs present a total impedance of 16ohms. Much better. The stock EHX supply is wholly adequate and quiet in operation. Stick a reverb in the box too and you're onto a winner. I look forward to the video. [1]Speaker spec from the EHX instruction leaflet.
+VintageSG Pucker, I have a nice old Cambridge audio works speaker that should fit the bill nicely :O) I was thinking of adding a Mooer shimverb into the equation. I recently bought an old National Panasonic T100D radio for £5 which has a phono input on the back and makes a fantastic little portable guitar amp, especially with a touch of reverb ! Keep an eye out for one. It looks the part too !
+SONGSTICKS I was just hacking an amp, as you do[1], when I remembered this. How have you got on?. I've scored an old radiogramme cabinet. Small, upright, suitable for a 5 watt valve head up top and a 1x15" below. I haven't started the build yet, but did think about using my Magnum instead of the valvie. [1]Adding a magic eye. I'm a sucker for a magic eye
Right on. Just buy some kind of preamp pedal and a speaker cabinet...you're rollin. Or you could just plug straight into this thing by itself, run it out to a cab if you only want to play clean and crank it up to get the power tube saturation effect for some old Black Sabbath type stuff.
Hey tone king...question could I run like...effects before this or after this.. like a dealay pedal a chorus and a reverb before..and an eq pedal after going into the cab?
Yes, in the early days anything that sat between your guitar and the input of an amplifier was considered a pre-amp. That said, some are better than others. Personally I'd use something with as many knobs and switches as possible with something like this. I've got a Boss OD-200 that works great in this regard, it has some dozen different dirt box and boost models, plus a 3 band EQ.
This would be an easier way to run a stereo rig especially with a stereo 412. Maybe use Two Notes Le Clean and Le Lead preamps with some wet pedals and let er rip.
Not really. The best solution for the Champ would be an attenuator that has a line out which you could then connect to a larger power amp which is then connected to a speaker cabinet. Or, you could connect the line out directly to the PA.
Hey, great video. Thanks! What about the Magnun stage level at half volumen ? seeking for a clean sound that has enough clean headroom at stage / gig level. And then add a pedal OD or a gain Pre amp to drive the signal. Thanks again!!!!
I’ve had the Mag. .44 for years. You need an EQ to get what you want. Other than that it’s more than enough for anything. I use it for my fly rig when I can’t take one of my Supros.
question would it work if you placed a volume pedal between the amp and the cabinet then adjusted your tone with the amp output and your volume with the volume pedal?
This kind of power amp could be use as a acoustic amp. You can plug your acoustic into some reverb or chorus fx and then into power amp. Sound will be much better then rough electric because of the preamp in acoustic (impedance issue). Peace :-)
Interesting pedal. Just occurred to me though that you can get a Joyo zombie guitar amp head for around the same price with extras. By any chance have you tried that amp head Tone King?
What do you think about using this with software like bias fx/amp coming from an iPad or laptop? What would be a good speaker or cab to use? considering you would be modeling amps/cabs already on the software....I would imagine something neutral would be best....would this work with a pa speaker or maybe something I'm not thinking of....I think it could be a cool use for this pedal/amp and you'd probably be the guy with the answer being the "tone king" and all lol. Maybe modeling isn't your thing and its def not mine but i thought it be something fun to play with...
You said at least twice that you can plug your guitar straight into the Magnum 44 but this is not really possible if this is a "power amp" because it needs a pre-amplified signal as input before it can power drive it thru a speaker/cabinet. Everyone I know who has this device they run their guitar thru some sort of preamp, booster, or simply a pedal rack first and THEN send it to the Magnum 44. Now Electro-Harmonix says that you can pretty much use that with any other instrument, e.g. electrical piano/keyboards by keeping the normal/bright switch to the normal position (but imho that is a personal taste). Just keep in mind that an electrical piano output has already been preamplified that's why it works plugged in straight in to this ...gizmo. Just to help those who are clueless about such gear and more confused by this "review" here's what's going on: If you are a guitarist/bassist you need something to shape your sound BEFORE you use this Magnum 44 to drive your speaker. Basically, in its purest form, this gizmo removes the need to haul a use big amp (or amps if you play in stereo in which case you need two Magnum 44) at gigs where there is no in house PA. Just your guitar/bass ---> pedal board ---> Magnum 44 ---> speaker/cab. Simple but not for everyone.
The Ohm's do not matter, because it is a digital amp. As long as there is some load on it, it will be fine and you don't have to worry about it crapping out like a tube amp.
It will make it fine. I rehearsed with mine first time today and when having the level at around 10 o'clock it well was loud enough. I suggest to put a some kind of clean preamp pedal infront of it or maybe an eq to get some control over the sound. .
With people as ..."bright" as you, it's no wonder why our society is drowning in darkness. I mean, assuming you have one, do you ever use your brain before you ask such stupid questions?
Been considering picking one or two of these up to power my Helix into my 4x12. Would I be able to run 2 of these together in the chain to give me 2x the wattage output?
From the instructions: "NEVER CONNECT THE OUTPUT OF THE 44 MAGNUM TO THE INPUT OF ANOTHER AMPLIFIER, AN EFFECTS PEDAL, MIXER, COMPUTER, COMPUTER INTERFACE OR OTHER SIMILAR DEVICE."
Ok I just had a great idea. Modular amplifier. Use the magnum as a power amp, get a pre amp, and have a loop. instead of buying a new amp, just buy a new preamp. make it sound exactly how you want
sooo... Do you think I could take a low wattage tube amp and in between it and the cab put one of these? So kinda like using the amp as pre amp and this to make it louder. I have a 12 or so watt fender princeton that sounds fantastic but it just needs little more juice to cut through when it's not miced
+Abe Thedrummer If you put the speaker out from your Princeton into the input of this, you'll fry it. If your amp has an FX loop or line out or headphone out, use the FX send or one of the other outputs and you're golden. Don't connect the speaker out to the in of this though. You still need a cab. If your Princeton has the speaker on a jack plug, good to go. hope that helps.
Well, it took 12 years,,, but here I am!!! Another great vid, TK.
fully didn't understand this 44w mag power amp product until now! thanks man!
I love this channel... thank you Tone King! You always have a review of the gear I'm considering and they are well done.
@xom400 the power amp is the last step in the amplification process before the speakers. you can plug this pedal directly into a speaker cabinet as long as the amp can handle the specifics of this pedal. it would have to be an 8 ohm cabinet i believe.

It sounds super killer with the preamp out into a power amp. I have an E1 and the 44 mag.
sick review. straight to the point. I should buy you a beer
Holly smokes!!!!!! 6:12... huge sound!!!!! man love this mini rig!!!! BTW TK... love that Randall cab... Cheers!
Thanks... very good demo... am about to order one...

Not so hot on the 44 by itself, but when you bring in the pre-amp then we're really open for business. Pretty cool concept overall.
-PK
I'm guessing that Seymour Duncan Tube classic + 44 magnum can be a pretty good solution.
@diabeticmonkey he does. when vht changed it's name to fryette, a new company called vht started; they're a different company from fryette/old vht. the special 6 is one of the new vht's amps

I've have a power noise hum when I pug mine in I live in a really old house how are you getting such a clean and clear sound
i have a soldano sp77 connected di to my sound card focusrite. When I turn up the preamp button on it, i just listen noise, that increase with turning up the preamp button. It's a problem. Could be useful to me getting one of these power amps to solve my problem ? thanks if someone will answer to my question.
can you use this 'amp' with pedals in front of it like on a normal amp ?
so if not mistaken, you could potentially use this setup instead of a twin channel amp head?
great vid as always.

Would I be able to get over a drummer and bassist with this infront of a 2x12?
Thats a great Question ! Drummers are louder that most speakers ..
What if I put a pre amp pedal infront of it?
+jarne vreys From experience, in a rehearsal room with 'hit it like you're trying to kill it' for a drummer, bass and lead guitar all going off, it more than held its own.

is it loud? how many db would get at noon?

Hi! I am looking for a compact poweramp to use with my POD HD 500. I wonder if the 44 Magnum will do this job. Thanks!
Hey guys sooooooo. How is he running the preamp and power amp together? Guitar ->Pre amp -> 44 mag -> speaker cab?
A bass version?
Is there any way of putting this after a Champ 600 (5 watt amp) to a cabinet, without messing with the champ tone? Just to give the champ more volume, 'cause i love my champ tone but i want to play with it in higher volumes...
hey tone king :) wich one is better/louder the 22 caliber or the 44 magnum?
I got mine today...great sound, really loud....a very good deal! ;)
@pastorkev777 so if i put the output of my peavy into the input of th power amp could i power the 4x12
@cardsfan3 8ohm or 16ohm
I have a Marshall MG and it sucks kinda :D Is it worth buying the 44 Magnum and a 1x12 cab and drive it with some distortion pedal?
does this get louder than the jca20h?
how loud would it get pushing bass freq on a 115 cab or 212? enough to contend with my tc elec. bg500 on decibels?
If I were to run a Boss ME-80 in front of this, would it work?
is this pedal only designed to go into cabs? is it designed to also run into a PA system?
TK do you ever respond to questions posted concerning your videos?

Neat! :) Great For taking on an airplane to do an out of tone gig without toting 300lbs of gear! Great Demo! You are the King \,,/
Combined with a preamp does it add distortion on clean sounds at higher volumes?
those rackmounts are obviously not quite as portable as a pedal. i just discovered the Carl Martin Rock Bug - that was more of what I had in mind.
This reviewer accidentally answered my question about the 44 Magnum; is it a true power amp that will cleanly amplify what I put into it without coloring it, or is it a 44 watt distortion pedal, and the answer is clear.
If it can output 44 watts of power then clearly it is not a distortion pedal.
Sounded better on its own without the preamp!
Cheers
Gary

I was just hacking an amp, as you do[1], when I remembered this.

Or you could just plug straight into this thing by itself, run it out to a cab if you only want to play clean and crank it up to get the power tube saturation effect for some old Black Sabbath type stuff.
Do you think this is loud enough to practice with an metal band when you turn it all the way up?
@lmsjr
can i plug this into my computer speakers instead of a cabinet
You might be able to do that with the preamp pedal, but not the 44 magnum. That has to go into a speaker.
Hey tone king...question could I run like...effects before this or after this.. like a dealay pedal a chorus and a reverb before..and an eq pedal after going into the cab?
when you say "pre-amp device" does that apply to any distortion pedal?

Not really. The best solution for the Champ would be an attenuator that has a line out which you could then connect to a larger power amp which is then connected to a speaker cabinet. Or, you could connect the line out directly to the PA.
How loud is it?
Will it sound good if I use Diezel VH4-2 through Magnum44 to a Peavey 2x12 classic speaker cab?
@OliOsbourne try it man, remember to post back results!
u should try that with a line 6 hd ...maybe next video
But there's specific Pre-amp pedals too :D Like the AMT Electronics M1 and E1 and B1 Etc.
@rampage222555 how is 150 dollars for a 44 watt amp pricey?
what if i put this pedal like this :
guitar>preamp>MAGNUM44>cabsim>PA
what do you think?
Its sounds surprisingly good, but its a little too pricy, it has a nice clean tone
Are there any other "pedal amps" made by different companies?
Hey, great video. Thanks! What about the Magnun stage level at half volumen ? seeking for a clean sound that has enough clean headroom at stage / gig level. And then add a pedal OD or a gain Pre amp to drive the signal. Thanks again!!!!
I’ve had the Mag. .44 for years. You need an EQ to get what you want. Other than that it’s more than enough for anything. I use it for my fly rig when I can’t take one of my Supros.
can you run this into a passive PA for vocals? PS do you need a mixer for a pa?
could you use it as a pedal?
They have a 22 version.
come on man! give me one of your amps! I'm poor but love sound!
question would it work if you placed a volume pedal between the amp and the cabinet then adjusted your tone with the amp output and your volume with the volume pedal?
Does this thing achieve the same volume levels a good 44 watt tube amp would? I guess what I'm really asking is, could one gig at a club with it?
Can I use a standard intrument cable between Magnumm 44 and a 4x12 cab?
Diego Montoya Menéndez no, you should use a speaker cable
I noticed it's very clean. No noise or did you use a limiter on the mix?
This kind of power amp could be use as a acoustic amp. You can plug your acoustic into some reverb or chorus fx and then into power amp. Sound will be much better then rough electric because of the preamp in acoustic (impedance issue). Peace :-)
Is this a analog amp in class D???
How it work with pedals? ...thanks :)

Steel String such a small, light and efficient power amp would be digital. Analog fet solid state amps are quite heavy and inefficient
I think you'll find impedance mismatches will kill a pedal like this, if not kill it, it'll certainly damage it.
You need to spend some time at EHX.com and read up. It is designed for 8 to 16 Ohms load. No less/more.
It will make it fine. I rehearsed with mine first time today and when having the level at around 10 o'clock it well was loud enough. I suggest to put a some kind of clean preamp pedal infront of it or maybe an eq to get some control over the sound. .
@MeFFF You do know that fryette is the company of vht's original founder, right? Guess not.
yo, how loud is the magnums clean signal before it starts to break up? would you say its loud enough to rehearse/gig with? cheers
i was wondering the same, i guess its 45 watts but idk wattage is not a great indicator for volume.
I love mine!!!
What is that "hook um horns" thing you do every video mean?
What about impedance? Do you run a speaker cable or an instrument cable.
Robert Herkert Instrument cable. And it can drive 8 and 16 ohm cabs.
Roald Koger You need a speaker cable from the 44 Mag to speaker just like any other power amp to speaker.
Brad Meyers No, you can't. It has to be connected to an 8 or 16 ohm speaker cab. You could use two in parallel for a stereo configuration.
I'm using the Seymour Duncan powerstage 170 with my helix, fucking awesome!!
From the instructions:
"NEVER CONNECT THE OUTPUT OF THE 44 MAGNUM TO THE INPUT OF ANOTHER AMPLIFIER, AN EFFECTS PEDAL, MIXER, COMPUTER, COMPUTER INTERFACE OR OTHER SIMILAR DEVICE."
So the output should use a speaker cable?
@@MarcassCarcass yes
For all intents and purposes, this is a power amp. Its Output should be connected to nothing else but a cabinet.
So I can't put 10 in a row?
@electropopriot i guess it would work good, although im not sure, i was asking the same question.
Ok I just had a great idea. Modular amplifier. Use the magnum as a power amp, get a pre amp, and have a loop. instead of buying a new amp, just buy a new preamp. make it sound exactly how you want
so many people actually do it already, but mostly in a rack format
After research, i discovered this
Liam Hogue yeah, I understand)

@ace69er They are. But it's a super portable amp solution!
sooo... Do you think I could take a low wattage tube amp and in between it and the cab put one of these? So kinda like using the amp as pre amp and this to make it louder. I have a 12 or so watt fender princeton that sounds fantastic but it just needs little more juice to cut through when it's not miced

If you put the speaker out from your Princeton into the input of this, you'll fry it. If your amp has an FX loop or line out or headphone out, use the FX send or one of the other outputs and you're golden. Don't connect the speaker out to the in of this though. You still need a cab. If your Princeton has the speaker on a jack plug, good to go.
hope that helps.
I hate it when I click on one of your videos without noticing.
Sounds great! Not to pricey either!
alrighty. thankyou
