Gracias.
Alfredo Krause was the first Tenor I was ever exposed to as a young boy my brother would play his records I am glad my brother introduced me to this fine elegant suave intelligent singers singer.
A masterful forty-five-year-old lirico-leggero tenor here. Not a falsetto: when you ask for mezzavoce, he makes mezzavoce. And what a final note... the Tokyo public is raving.
Bravo Alfredo
Always elegant, always effortless. Nicolai Gedda really has my heart in this aria (when he sings the top C it's like the sun comes out) but this is really marvelous.
Elegante, composto, musicale senza eccessi!! Uno degli ultimi Signori della Grande Lirica
Nice to hear the solo violin part which is normally mixed so far back in recordings to be almost inaudible - a pity the applause drowned out the exquisitely scored ending. The high C was a bit yelly for me in this aria although I am normally a big fan of Kraus’s singing.
Hard to judge the high note, as the recording quality isn't good, which means the note is a bit distorted. I think it's thrilling, and I imagine in the house it would not have sounded "yelly". Though, I do prefer Di Stefano's approach with his sumptuous diminuendo... Those who went to the opera between 1950 and 1980 really were spoilt for great Fausts!
Technically great but expressively quite cold. This is one of the romantic arias in the repertoire (my personal favourite tenor aria) but it all sounds a bit aloof and doesn't ooze any sort of longing and passion.
I saw Kraus do Faust at Covent Garden in June of 1983 (he would have been ~56). I recall that performance as being better than this clip in which he relies on his superb breath control & phrasing to make up for any missing brilliance and resilience in the timbre. As to the interpretation of this Kraus performance: if you feel Faust should ooze warmth and starry-eyed passion then imho your view of the character is one-sided. Faust is more complex than that ( operatic understatement of the year!! ) even here in the Garden Scene. Go back and re-think what happens in Act I; what's motivating the title character?
@@user-bc9mn7gq2c I also heard a Covent Garden Faust with Kraus, but in the early 1970's (with Freni and Ghiaurov). He did a messa di voce on the C5 (starting pianissimo and opening to a crescendo and then back to pianissimo). Must have lasted 20 seconds. The normally stiff upper lipped CG audience went totally apeshit. Full disclosure, so did I.
A full force tenor! Sublime to listen and watch! One of the greatest and unsurpassed til nowadays! What a lucky audience!!!!

One of the few excellent AND clever singers who knew exactly which roles suited him and his voice… ✨✨✨
Thank you for this wonderful post! 🙏🍀

Belleza.
Perdon, de todos
its not bad, but did you ever listen to Giuseppe Sabbatini? Live in Japan
Alfredo Kraus is the great idol of Juan Diego Flórez, but Flórez is more expressively 🎶🎶🎶 from which year was it recorded?

@@bernardlowe7191 Thanks so much for haring -- these bits of perf. history are priceless. In 1983 he was moving on stage like someone 1/2 his age!
