Another great and honest review. Thanks! A buddy of mine was at the concert for Trilogy. He was holding popcorn, soda and candy but when Emerson played the horn synth sound after Fugue he threw everything he was holding in the air and yelled EMERSON! Music is indeed powerful😀 Keep up the good work Justin!
Thank you for reviewing this gem, Trilogy. The next thing by ELP I would like to share with you is Works, especially Their " Fanfare ft or the Common Man", I another Copeland piece. Also, "Pirates", maybe their best work. "Exchange your rags for the velvet coats of kings!"
I agree it is an overlooked ELP album. I love the Tarkus track, but this album feels they worked together seriuosly trying to make the best of the three
Great, great album. Probably my favourite of all ELP's. The first fews tracks, The Endless Enigma 1, especially Fugue remind me a beautiful summer's day.
I love ELP and most of their albums (I can't deal with Love Beach). However, there is something about Trilogy which makes it my favorite. Maybe it's the mix of acoustic/electric, there is a feel about it. Great review, thanks!
Probably ELP's most underrated album and a Great one !! With of course one of their Best Classics epics, "The Endless Enigma" and Prog favorite "Hoedown" : D
I agree totally with your ranking. They used the bolero track as an audience warm up when a mate of mine went to see them. As it built in crescendo their names flashed up intermittently and briefly on a screen behind the stage. As it crashed to its end, all three names were projected, and they appeared. I tried to get tickets for the show but failed. Mate was up early in the queue! Glad you are going to do Pictures. It's possibly my favourite. There are a couple of live versions on you tube, including a filmed concert, but the released album version is the best!
Re: Palmer's drumming on the Trilogy cut, which I thought was _stand out_ throughout, I want to point out that it featured the best "Cowbell" element of all the great songs that featured the use of the Cowbell sound. One man's opinion...
Trilogy is a great LP. I listen to it often. And have done so for 45 years! I agree the The Endless Enigma Pt1- Fugue - The Endless Enigma Pt2 are really amazing. There is hardy anyone who would even try this song now. This Album is a great way to experience the ELP roller coaster they have so many facets to their music and they are always so well done. To me living Sin is so well connected to the Trilogy song because after a break-up the living sin phase can follow. The Sheriff is just good fun and I always enjoy it as do many ELP fans. I can very highly recommend you look for The Endless Enigma - An International Collaboration, that virtual group including Rachel Flowers do a really good cover version and this is the only good cover version I know about. And it gives you a good idea of how complex this song is and you have a better appreciation of what Emerson, Lake and Palmer achieved back in 1972. Always my of my favorite prog rock albums.
I’ve listened to a number of reactions from others. They strictly listen and tell you how they feel at the moment. Then they look at what others historically have said, and they responded to that. I like how you have first reacted, then break it down after further digesting the songs. I like how you are the critic, versus reacting to other critics. We all have different tastes of what we like. I have heard so many bands from you that missed in my youth when I work 60 hours a week getting established and had no time for new music. I am getting more up to date with 70-80’s music mix I missed through your passion to do a thoughtful job. After all the 70’s was a ground breaking era, and, now I know more then I did before.. God bless you JP.
Completely agreed re: "Trilogy" as an ELP starter point. It's the whole sauce without being as potentially overwhelming as "Tarkus" or "Karn Evil 9." (I also think all of "The Endless Enigma" does the job nicely.) Especially now that you can do some video stuff, a thing you might want to check out: There's an international-collab cover of "The Endless Enigma" that is really good in its own right. The number of people they needed to get the job done highlights just how hard these three guys were working, and Rachel Flowers makes the piano part look effortless.
Yes 1972' was an "Epic" year for Prog and the beginning of my journey going to concerts with my older brother at the start, I was 13' and my Brother 17' with Yes - Close to the Edge tour my 1st !! About Bolero…when I was in high school (in the late 80s), i let my friend borrow this cd and Bolero was his favorite track. I was perplexed because it was horrible in my opinion. Over time, its grown on me and now I find it so interesting. It’s nice to have a song on an album that you love, a song that grows on you over the many many years to become higher esteemed and makes the album (as a whole) more enjoyable.
It's nice hearing you elaborate about ELPs albums. I recond it will take you another 4-6 months before you come to Brain Salad Suregry (who I've noticed isn't in your playlist), just because of the sheer complexity of BBS. Trilgy is ELP's most melodic album and perhaps the one that's steps closest towards jazz (of the first 6 albums at least), so it absolutely makes sence that that's you favourite and that it's also a great entry point into ELP. The Sheriff and Hoedown was the first songs from ELP that I really liked, followed by Tarkus. I think songs like The Sheriff is needed in their music to show everyone that ELP really didn't take them self too seriously (despite what some would say/think), and you know ELP is some serious music! Going to the cabin for a few days, see you when I get back :)
Focus is an overlooked Dutch Prog Rock band whose album “Moving Waves” released in 1970 and reached #2 in the UK Charts that included the single “Hocus Pocus” which reached #9 in the US. Listen to the whole album, you’ll be stunned.
love the review justin this is also probably my fav elp album (tied with tarkus) and we have almost similar rankings i also find abaddon's bolero to be the weakest but has nice moments overall
You are Hilarious!!! Thanks for the laughs. Hooray for the thunder!! Great review. As I've stated previously while you've presented this album this is my favorite ELP album hands down. To each his own...I personally enjoy their version of Bolero...maybe that's because I was already very much familiar with the original piece.
Some live performance recommendations for you, just because 😀 YES - South Side of the Sky (Live at Montreux) or their 35th Anniversary Concert. Both are great. GFR - Inside Looking Out Live from 1969. I'm going to keep recommending this until you do it 😃 Rachel Flowers playing anything by ELP
Gracias for your your ❤️. Carl is the best ever. Now, try " Pictures at an Exposition", the live record from 1971, Emerson's version of the piano piece by Mussorgsky, with the genius orchestrations added by Chopin.
Trilogy (the song) is a good intro to ELP. Can't wait for you to dive into Works Vol 1. Pirates is just phenomenal, even by their standards and stands as my favorite piece by ELP. My favorite album by ELP? All of them. Love Beach is weak comparatively but Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman makes the cut as worthy of them. All of this IMHO only, your mileage may vary. :)
Ooo... Just starting the review but... Is that a new CD tower on the set? Since you're standing, it's a little difficult for these aging eyes to make out. :edit: Oh, OK. It looks like it's the vinyl and CD of Pictures at an Exhibition propped up against your shelves.
You should check out Triumvirat’s Illusions on a double dimple/Spartacus. Really similar to ELP in their style and I’m sure you’d enjoy listening to them very much ❤️
Pretty much agree Justin though would out the track Trilogy after Enigma Pt2. Abaddon's Bolero, yeah, can easily give that a miss, but it is what it says, a bolero! Cheers.
Well sed!! Although I would rank "Living Sin" higher up just because of it's "Nice and slippery" sleazy almost proto punk vibe!! And the organ!!!!!!!!! Come on, the ORGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JP: I completely agree that this is ELP's best album. For me, it would be a perfect record without Abaddons Bolero and The Sheriff. I didn't like the bolero when Ravel did it lol so there. I've read some articles about this album and I've read that this was their attempt to be more commercially viable which makes me laugh because this album (sans perhaps From The Beginning which is a gorgeous song) is not commercial to my ears. There are very few albums that one could say are perfect (Close to the Edge comes to mind with 3 perfect songs but there are very few generally) Even very talented musicians have stinkers, including the greats. Speaking of "the greats"....... yadayada Frank Zappa LOL (you know my shpeel) so just listen to the darn song and enrich your life... I don't mean to imply that your life isn't currently enriched, just to say that it will make it even richer... Ok I'm going to stop now before I dig a deeper hole lol) Keep up the great work. PS: I'm so glad you're getting into XTC, you really understand them. For me, they are the perfect blend of pop sensibility with prog style experimentation, sprinkled with the added bonus of thoughtful, clever, and often subversive lyrics presented in a light-hearted way. Although "Dear God" (from Skylarking) is pretty straightforward and always I mean always has me pondering.
Check out this glorious cover of Trilogy by Jad&Den Quintet. It shows how much jazz influences the song has in it: ua-cam.com/video/xNxoIDPoURY/v-deo.html

My favorite is _Brain Salad Surgery_ but _Trilogy_ is also a great album.

Always been my favorite album of theirs. Diverse, emotional, heavy/romantic.... Glad you enjoyed it as well.
Probably ELP's most underrated album and a Great one !!
With of course one of their Best Classics epics, "The Endless Enigma"

It's my favorite ELP album too
Thats just because you have good taste😉
@@JustJP 🙂 So do you. By the way, did you get a chance to listen to any of that music by Ronn that I told you about? Just curious 🙂
@@JustJP It's ok if you didn't care for them. I won't get upset 🙂

I purchased this and Yes-Close To The Edge on the same night on 8-track tapes. I played Yes first of course.

The first time I saw Rachel was her solo cover of Tarkus. Blew me away. Justin you have to watch this girl play Emerson.
One of the best progressive albums of 1972 - I'd rank it second, after Close To The Edge.
