I took a subject about the Middle Ages. Christianity was discussed ZERO times. The bishops were just political figures. But hey, we did have two important lectures: medieval feminism and medieval homosexuality. Both lectures were based on "proof" that would cause you to lose in court. The feminism lecture tried to criticise inheritance laws (well, basically the same laws that brought Elizabeth II to the throne). I firmly objected. I said: "At those times you could not just sign documents. You had to to be a hands on ruler. It is very dificult for a woman to live on horseback." The homosexuality lecture showed letters that anyone would write to close friends. It is possible some "close friends" were a bit too close but there was NO PROOF. So the lecture felt like nasty slander. A king can have a close friend with whom he goes hunting, plays chess, drinks wine. If he gives his friend a title and land, it does NOT mean they have a sexual relationship!!! It is insane that young people study the Middle Ages and then can't say anything about Christianity. However, they can tell you things about Medieval feminism. Help!

I'd say the only criticism I'd offer is that Pageau's description theosis is also what Catholics believe, we too believe in theosis and deafication! but as always, loved everything else, can't wait to get a copy of his book!
Indiana University English Professor Roy W. Battenhouse wrote “Shakespearean Tragedy: Its Art and Its Christian Premises” 1969. I believe Dr. Battenhouse was also ordained by the Episcopal Church.
Christianity among Christians is as strong as ever; it's western culture that is waning as it denies Christianity, it's true heart and soul, or ethos if you prefer.
Christian art is truly some of the most beautiful art that I've ever seen in my life. It makes me want to try sketching something beautiful like what I've seen online. ❤✝️
I was talking to my wife about art and Christianity. I am in awe of the buildings created as monuments to God. They are important and a beautiful way of showing worship. But then there are times where I think the church (most often Catholics) takes it too far and decorates things needlessly with gold and uses over the top materials. They could have used the immense wealth spent on some of these things to possibly feed more starving people, or fund more missions trips. Ultimately, we need to remember this is all temporary. If the money used to plate something in gold could of instead have been used to fund a trip where even just one person was brought to Christ, that money would be better spent on the eternity of a soul than a building that will be wiped from existence in the end, no matter how impressive and beautiful it is.
Handling a church budget can be a balancing act, but I submit that beauty ennobles the soul. And poor people who experience beauty in church have their souls lifted toward heaven. If the churches are only practical, the rich still have beauty in their homes, but the poor miss out.
Love this episode!!! Thank you very, very much. I'll check out the book, too. I agree we need to re-tell the lovely, deep stories of our civilization! I miss them from my childhood. ❤️❤️❤️. Deep thank you.

The early letters to the church were very critical of this kind of thinking. Theosis, in and of itself is not a harmful concept... until you start to play around with too many words: UNION with God to EQUALITY with God- or even worse, apotheosis (taking God's place...) I've seen gorgeous Russian Orthdox churches with gorgeous art but looked very Catholic. Criticism aside, Jonathan your work is great and que dieu te bénit et te garde!
Andrew, let’s expand this notion of “most Christian art being insufferable” due to a lack of genuine creativity to the reality that liberal cities tend to be more exciting and artistically innovative than conservative cities; compare Boulder to Colorado Springs, or Denver to Des Moines. Why is that?
"Yo Klaven! Wait till you read my script!!!!!!!" HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA "But respectfully i want to tell you that............ I'm joking!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a joke!!!!! I know that there are no "E's" in KLAVAN! Can't wait for you to read it.
Re the editing of Christ from our world, and art, there's also activity associated with William Shakespeare. A man named Alexander Waugh (related to Auberon and Evelyn) strongly supports Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, as the actual writer of Shakespeare's plays. The problem is that this also involves the import of the "faith" of Hermes Trismegistus and a Masonic tradition that adopted all things Hermetic into the works. A form of gnosticism in my point of view. Back to the problem. If the linkage between the "real" Shakespeare and a gnostic version of Christianity rather that Christianity pure and simple is true, it really devalues Shakespeare overall. The enemy advances?
@@kirayoungblood the thing is, Im right into etymology, its shocking how just plain wrongly people use general day to day English, but everyone just nods like they understand, most, probably even think they do.

your first error is early on, before 2 minutes have passed. So everybody believed in Shakespeare's time. so they were [probably] Christian. you do not seem to know the difference between assent to doctrine and saving faith. the first is necessary for the second but it not identical to it besides, in Elizabethan time church attendance WAS COMPULSORY, BY LAW so how honest was all that palaver when they were not allowed to do what they would rather do on a Sunday. why do conservatives hanker for a past that never was
You're kinda missing his point: Whether the people of the time were sincere in their faith or not, they were AWARE of the great artistic truths for their entire lives. The truths of Christianity were embedded throughout the culture, and as such Shakespeare could "subtly" invoke them without any problem for the audience to understand. BTW, Elizabeth had a very "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" attitude about the church attendance mandates, mainly because she was sick and tired of all the Catholic vs Protestant conflicts that went back and forth during the reigns of her father and her sister (Bloody Mary).
^^What this guy said. If church was mandatory there wouldn't really be a need for Shakespeare to include heavy preaching in his works. The people would have gotten that every sunday.
Orthodox liturgy adds to much. The imagery rituals aren’t biblical. If you want the best liturgy then follow the Bible verbatim. I don’t think it’s a sin but it’s not not beneficial because it’s not a method of worship one can ascertain from reading the bible. Every little detail matters in worship. If it cant be backed by scripture it’s pointless. The church should constantly be in reformation. We should constantly be evaluating that it is as close to biblical standards as possible.
We do, just not in the essence sense, but rather the energy sense. We become the very energies of God, we become Uncreated being itself, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. We take on the very attributes of God's energies, such as love itself. But we don't became the Trinity, nor do we get "absorbed" into God.
@@laststand6420 Orthodox christians. Theosis is the concept, with their Energy vs Essence distinction concept. You undergo a ontological change, not a mere moral one. You'll still be human of course, but a far more elevated one.

Great video
Life is hunky dunkity do.
The enemy advances?

good
🎉
maybe I would read Shakespear if he was translated into English
Shakespeare is English, I can read his stuff just fine and understand what’s going on in the story it isn’t that hard lol
@@kirayoungblood the thing is, Im right into etymology, its shocking how just plain wrongly people use general day to day English, but everyone just nods like they understand, most, probably even think they do.
There's a series of books called "No Fear Shakespeare" that does exactly that.
@@kirayoungbloodamazing that you understand perfectly despite the fact that to perfectly understand Shakespeare requires understanding the pronunciation of the day to hear the rhyme and to understand the culture and mores of the time to understand the jokes and irony.
Don’t think burning Norte dame was an accident
I am a secret christian at this point 😅
they edited doestevesky? Dang it I just bought the book, really hope it wasn't edited to appease secular society :/
Hard to believe you're still on UTube. Figured by now you would have moved to Rumble..
Part of the rising anti-christian puzzle for sure.
even signs know the difference between men and women, I learned at about 2 or 3

your first error is early on, before 2 minutes have passed. So everybody believed in Shakespeare's time. so they were [probably] Christian.
you do not seem to know the difference between assent to doctrine and saving faith. the first is necessary for the second but it not identical to it
besides, in Elizabethan time church attendance WAS COMPULSORY, BY LAW
so how honest was all that palaver when they were not allowed to do what they would rather do on a Sunday.
why do conservatives hanker for a past that never was
You're kinda missing his point: Whether the people of the time were sincere in their faith or not, they were AWARE of the great artistic truths for their entire lives.
The way Johnathan speaks makes me a believer. I wonder why my Pastor can't say it like that.
Man cannot become God
That statement is being pushed much by Christian casualties.
But we do try so hard (usually with disastrous consequences).
@@drooskie9525 Where did you hear that?
@@laststand6420 Orthodox christians. Theosis is the concept, with their Energy vs Essence distinction concept. You undergo a ontological change, not a mere moral one. You'll still be human of course, but a far more elevated one.
