DISCLAIMER: nice disclaimer!
No pedal is worth $700. To be honest, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a pedal, especially these days when there are so many clones of common circuits out there. I love this channel!
I never begrudged the price of my H9 Max.
@@HeavyListeningMusic H9 is multi effects so you're getting alot for your money.
Me too, guptech is making a percolatior for less than 100 usd.
Oh cool! I dig Guptec. They make quality stuff for a decent price. Also I have to support my fellow Canadians :)
They were also super helpful answering my questions when I just started building pedals. Not much ego there.
Also is it an original style germanium/silicon hybrid?
It's Steve Albini's fault to be fair. The new versions are probably different colors so that may inflate the value if you want a specific edition. I missed the last HP-2 drop but I did right an email and got a reply that they're trying to have the percolator in stock in a less ephemeral way. It was a little vague but I don't know if that meant more frequent drops or bigger batches or what. That being said, if you're on the mailing list, if you're on iOS you can set a "starred" contact so that you'll get a notification specifically for them. :)
These pedals aren't even originals, they're just clones. They go for 220 on the site if you get them there, which is easy because Land sends emails about upcoming drops.
Everything is Josh Scott's fault!
I just like these products because they look like they were designed for the military
But it sounds like crap.
Great intro. Thank you for being you, Ryan.
I didn’t know they were going for so much. I’ve had mine for awhile and love it plus I like that it’s a local company for me.
There’s like a beautiful clear dry end to it, amd also fuzzy like a good fuzz. It sounds punk and old am pop. Love it!
Something about a fool and his money
Wow! I love that the fuzz is consistent.. I don't think I've ever heard a fuzz that didn't sound at least a LITTLE out-of-control with the fuzz.. This sounds almost like you've got a slightly detuned sawtooth mixed in with your signal rather than just a fuckton of loud noise. Extremely impressed at the clarity and definition of notes! *edit* ok, the FIRST part, before you started tweeking the knobs. But even then, it still sounds a lot more "controlled" than almost any fuzz I've ever heard! It's like it's really smooth even when it's dirty and breaking up.
Pedal: 700$
Afordaboard: WTF dude, how could you....
So glad I was able to find a clone of this (actually, technically what this is a clone of) on Reverb for $100
please explain
Somebody sold an original rare-ass Harmonic Percolator for $100? What a steal.
@@noesunyoutuber7680 Think he's saying he found an alternate clone that's a lot cheaper.
There’s a couple other HPs out there. Check out the Latent Lemon Audio “Hurts”
If anyone is looking for alternatives, there's the Frederic effects Utility percolator, the electrofoods lil' pig, the latent lemon hurts, and the karma suture by catalinbread. If you're handy there's plenty of kits and schematics online to build your own, that's how I got mine.
Or Joe Gore's Porkolator ua-cam.com/video/I2gog4fsrmc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/lgFM5dapHj0/v-deo.html
Plus one vote for Fredric effects, all of his stuff is incredible
The Karma Suture is great btw.
It's just a ripoff... I will never buy a pedal with weird sounds. I like the straight guitar sounds by throwing a few Boss pedals in front of an Amp. All you need is chops. Not too many pedals with unusable tones.
that's true, no reason to spend more than like $150 for a harmonic percolator. it's also one of the easiest circuits to diy, as long as you can find a decent germanium transistor.
Dig the new disclaimer at the start of the vid! I built my own HP a while back, I think it was 65 bucks in parts. It's not a hard circuit, but finding the parts takes some work.
Not gonna lie, I clicked "like" for 8-bit "Two Princes". Thanks for making me smile with some '90s silliness.
Steve Albini uses one and years later this is what happens, lol
Ouch, I had one of these on my radar, not no mo’
These were like $140 a month ago! Give me a Headache!
I think there is a HUGE difference between a $700 pedal and a $700 SOUND/TONE😉
Sure IF there was NO other way to get that tone but ONLY this pedal then SURE I believe it IS a $700 pedal BECAUSE that sure is a $700 tone
BUT there ARE alternatives that provide that tone AND they’re cheaper too... Supply&Demand, folks👍
For whatever reason this pedal came to my attention about 2 weeks before that JHS video. I like it so much that I bought two. In addition to the company’s cool aesthetic, sense of humor, and the fact that the builder is in the Bay Area, they are really fun to play with and sound great in a mix. Then...those prices climbed. Glad I snagged a couple.
Good Show. Looks like you had fun.
Got mine for 400. I was always late on the restocks, and then the restocks became few and very far between. Finally done buying fuzz pedals so it was well worth it to me.
Hi Ryan! If you didn't notice any substancial diference with the switch, most likely your two princes rig didn't had much headroom and the pedal was pushing them into OD in both positions... The switch lifts diode clipping and makes the circuit work much like a booster. PS: I like this circuit a lot, and currently building some DIY versions of it ;and I'm with you, 700$ is klon type hype.
Thanks for the advice. I buy doubles of the pedals you recommended. They have all been amazing. I have been looking at the schematic of the Harmonic Percolator and the Jerkulator. Very simple circuit that I have to build. The original is basically a fuzz face with the same diodes on the output as the Boss DS1 without the Tone control. Steve Albini uses it flat vol and fuzz into a solid state and tube amps for a mix of the treble of solid state and bass of tubes. Valves5❤
If the pedal is anything like the one I'm building, then the toggle switch adds/removes a clipping stage with germanium diodes and a resistor. The difference is mostly in when it "percolates". Without the clipping stage, the pedal will add harmonics and compression for quite a while without going into full-out fuzz territory, acting more like a booster/compressor. With the clipping stage, the signal will break up much sooner.
I found the Camo one on Reverb, and now I'm just waiting for its arrival!🎉
I’ve gigged with HP style fuzzes a lot and it always cuts through. A bit dark at times, but they’re quite suitable for a grimy rhythm guitar sound
Just realised a shop in my city had these in stock for some reason, managed to snatch one for retail price even when they're sold out on the website
Ryan my good man! I watched your video about thai food (maybe it was some other food) and you had a pedal that YOU DIDNT EVEN INTRODUCE but holy shit man I hunted it down - and BOUGHT IT! My first expensive (100$+) "boutique" pedal - and it IS FUCKING AMAZING.
Its the Hungry Robot Wardenclyffe, its so bizarre and wild. And it makes me sound like Tropical Fuck Storm/The Drones.
So this is just a thank you for showing me the pedal - you played a little noodly riff that made my brain explode and scream "THATS TROPICAL FUCK STORM-ESQUE".
Anyway, now I am satisfied with life... well... another pedal couldn't hurt ? right?
Not $700 fun. $200 fun, plus the joy of knowing you got one from the builder ... and maybe later you'll sell it for $700.
Red Ant stompboxes Charlie fuzz is veeeery good version of this pedal. For good price. And with not ridiculous waiting list ;).
Dang I almost bought one after your review last year. Kicking myself now for holding off
Sounds good,I would like to try it on bass.
I really need to know as well! 🎸😎🤘
Hey bring back the purple Fender Lead for more videos! It would look good with the new background, and it sounds great.
I sold that to a local viewer. I really liked that guitar but i can keep everything forever.
Nice bright bridge pickup in that D'Angelico.. Was that the name?
I'm working a $25 DIY FUZZ FACE GERMANIUM.. Hard sell for much of anything after that.
i just bought one. what is the noise situation? is there a loud floor? I had to have my Rat pedal gated for the first time the other night so I am curious if there is noise when there is no note being played. Sounds gated in this video too
I like the aesthetics of the thing more than its sounds. A local clone builder makes this circuit for 60 bucks, prob go that route if I wanted to percolate
I bought a Mastotron almost 4 years ago for around 150-ish and I've never felt like I needed another fuzz pedal.
The Mastotron is the fuzz pedal that all others should be measured against. I bought mine used for $120 and I’ll never give it up.
That being said I picked up a Land HP-2 and it has its own fuzz going on. The best way not to pay more than the MSRP of $219 is to join the Land Mailing list to get emailed when their next drop is. Have your credit card info already entered on your Reverb account and then keep refreshing the Land Devices Reverb page until you can complete the purchase. I was failing with Apple Pay, but when I switched to my CC# stored on Reverb it went much quicker.
Just because someone lists the pedal at $700 doesn’t mean that is how much it’s worth, a subjective concept anyways.
I built a percolator clone awhile back. It’s my favorite fuzz. I’ve probably still got some transistors that’ll work. I’ll built someone a sloppy, crappy looking clone for $300.
Edit: the switch lifts the diodes out of the circuit. When the diodes are engaged, they clip the signal, making quieter, and adding their character. When lifted, its louder, just the transistors
I have three of them on my pedal board. I don't even use them. I just like to look at the groovy switches as I play Honky Tonk Women.
Lol
Dude the disclaimer was rad you should do that with every sponsored video just to push proving the point
This video wasn't even sponsored and I included it. The pedal was provided to me a year ago and theres plenty of other stuff in the background of the video that were provided over the years. Im tired of trying to sweat the details so most videos are going to get that disclaimer for the time being.
Pretty sure The switch adds/removes the germanium clipping diodes.
Man, I should have gotten one when I first heard about it.
Yeah. got that email, and during the payment process I lost the one in my shopping cart 😏
Mmmm I’ll stick with my 20 dollar fuzz
That's what I did, though that's also Josh's fault because I saw his Behringer video.
Agree... I don't hear $700....
The total sum of the cost of parts is probably $20
it is such a simple circuit...really.
I've tried a number of percolator's, and the LD is one of,but prob not the best.
I waited for a break in the overhyped used market ,- which I often do,- and paid around $200; IMO, with so many similar options, it's silly to ever go much beyond new retail.
I use a lot of Fuzz, which is why I need to find circuits that cover broader ground. The OBN Haunt has long been a favourite, and quite possibly is a better perc than most percs, along with several other things. The HP 2 is a pedal I'll keep, but it won't have a place on the boards.
Hmm! I didnt know it was up that high. I was shopping for a percolator awhile ago. I got a Karma Suture from catlinbread that's awesome but it's not a perfect copy of a percolator. It is astoundingly awesome though. Seems pretty mellow compared to the other clones. Either way, I wanna say you can get a real percolator from around $400 most all the time. I'm pretty impressed land devices gets that expensive. I've been having a hell of a time finding a decently priced Chase Bliss Thermae. What's the deal with that? I can get discontinued Brothers or even the supposedly exclusive Bliss Factory more easier.
I Built my own HP. The total worth of the very few components in it is at tops worth 20 bucks. Maybe the hard to find transistors make it 30 bucks. And it is an easy build with few components, as said.
That dangelico is beautifulll
CLEARLY THIS MAN IS IN CAHOOTZ WITH REVERB. FURTHER PUSHING THE PRICE OF USED ONES HIGHER AND HIGHER SO REVERB CAN GET THEIR COMMISSION.
REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY WORKS PEOPLE! "This pedal is not worth $700" PLEEEASE IM BUYING ONE FOR 750 NOW. YOURE NOT MY DAD AND ILL DO WHAT I WANT.
If you want to buy one for $750 I’ll sell you mine lol
probably the single most obnoxious pedal I’’ve ever heard. Rivals the Big Muff. Someone would want this because…why….again? (But GREAT vid! Always love your stufff…)
I bought one of these right when they came out because of how cool it looks. It’s my favorite fuzz, it sounds absolutely killer😎
Does anyone know why some of the HP-2's have a black ring (washer?) around the LED and some do not? Is it just because it falls off easily that you don't see it always on there?
LEDs can be mounted with or without a bezel
You can literally get that tone from at least 100 other fuzz boxes. We’re just paying the extra $ for a cool enclosure 🥺
The Land Device HP-2 is great pedal, if you play the guitar with feeling...
I think you started with Cream and went to Presidents of United States of America's Naked and Famous to Kick Out the Jam.
Mike B. B. From Philly
THAT'S how you disclose... kudos.
Damn, I sold mine for $350 and thought I did good. I've tried a couple of Percolators and this one isn't magic compared to something like the Lemon Hurts you can get new for $220 still.
Pedal says it's made in Oakland, Ca. For all non Californians, that's The Bay Area. That could be why it's marked up so high. Not worth $700.00 for sure, Maybe $150.00.
Sounds killer! 💀
So what’s the “affordaboard” version of this? The cuvave rocks but does not sound the same. Way different vibe.
Nine Of Swords make a good one for very cheap.
"It's a no from me, Dawg." - The Great Randy Jackson
You can get that Harmonic Percolator that you've been DAYdreaming of, because you've been busy not sleeping, watching your email inbox.
Your opening reminds me a lot of Glenn Fricker.
I didn't even pay 700 for my guitar and amp...
Sounds good, but I can get other pedals which sound equally good or better for $500 less or even lesser than that.
i just really want land devices ep pedal.. even though i know i could easily get any other ep preamp pedal..
who needs pedals for toan when you have butterscotch tele
RIGHT ON BORTHER BUTTSCOCH TELE STRAIGHT INTO AMP WAS GOOD NUF FOR JIM HANDTRICKS ITS GOOD NUF FOR ME

@@60CycleHumcast i lol’d
its hard to find but i feel like the jimi hendrix fuzz wah is a wah better fuzz. ive tried quite a few fuzz boxes including the old wood box army green sovtek big muff as my first. id go with either over this for less than half what this is going for. now as i write this i think its around 400 not 7 but still. not worth it for a 2 knob and a switch fuzz imho.
Love your channel and have been a sub for a long time. However, i don’t think the demo of this pedal was given it’s fair shake, as I believe it would sound much “better” and different, if it was going into an already gainey amp or when combined with another overdrive pedal. I think that’s the case with a lot of fuzzes. Also, noteworthy to show how it cleans up when guitar volume is turned down.
I don't typically demo into dirty amps because then I'm demoing the amp.
Gotta get an aluminium necked guitar and wrap the guitar strap around your waist to get the proper sound out of it.
You also need to weigh about as much as a very thin bit of tissue paper. 😆
@@ArzHole Albini's not super skinny anymore. Still rocking the same set-up, tho, AFAIK.
@@tothefinlandstation Yeah, I know he's put on some of the middle aged fat. But that's how he'll always be remembered.
$700? You cant`t go wrong with a Teisco Fuzz, cheap and awesome pedal.
I've built a number of Harmonic Percolators, and launched a spate of others building them when I recommended it: www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=99596.0 It's a nice pedal. Relies on use of a germanium transistor, so that will ultimately reduce available quantities. Not worth $700.
The Gain is *FIXED*. There in a control for adjust the amplitude of what you feed it, and another control for adjusting the volume of the output. But there is NO adjustment of gain. The Jordan Bosstone works the same way: a control for padding down the input, and a control for output volume, but no adjustment of gain.
Oh, hi, Mark!
@@Doomchild2XL Um...hi...do I know you from a forum under a different handle?
@@markhammer643 Your name is all over DIY forums. Your fame precedes you.
@@AndreaAustoni I wouldn't call it 'fame', but yeah, I have a big and very active mouth, and wayyyyy too much time on my hands. 😁
Came for the click-bait opening.
Stayed for the fun noodling.
Yeah. I dunno if I’d pay $700 for something I’ll be stomping on-much less using anywhere it’d be in danger of having beer spilled on it.
I would rather buy the flagship multi effects unit this year for that price range. 😂 It's more sounds and function for the money.
Plot twist its jhs second secret compagnie
I here the Rick derringer sound
I think the eq of your amp is off for this pedal. You have to remember that this pedal works best into a treble heavy setting. I have one and have fought with the same, but into a fender with the treble crank and the low end rolled off the pedal becomes something else.
Me who got mine for free off reverb pedal of the week when they were new😅
I hate fuzz, but I enjoy your fuzz videos. Odd.
I love the look of it and there about 30 other pedals, way cheaper that can produce that shitty fuzz sound. If peeps want to pay $700 for it, I'm very happy for them.
A+ on the disclaimer...but $700 for a pedal that helps you evaporate in the mix is an easy pass. I can buy a whole variety of fuzz pedals for much less that help me do the same thing.
That pedal looks like it was made in the U.S.S.R. in 1972.
No notification here.
Dammit Josh!
how much did you buy yours ???
It was provided to me by the builder a year ago
I will save you all some time... Not worth $700.
Now, save yourselves, it’s too late for me!
It's good, but it's no nyan-cat gif!
Anyone remember the Urso Splinter Percolator from the early/mid 2000s?
Lol @ all the bitter comments from people who didn’t get one before prices skyrocketed. Don’t worry, they’ll come down and you can secretly get this pedal that you “don’t want.”
They sell out instantly because i buy 15 when i get the email and sell them on reverb for $700
Just buy a Nine of Swords Headache
For 700 bucks, I could probably buy a lot of bees and just record them buzzing around. It would achieve the same sound.
The Cuvave Fuzz sounds better.
the pedals orange switch simply takes the clipping diodes out of the circuit.
OMG THE DISCLAAAAAIMER 😭
its worth what someone will pay for it i guess!
I'll take the Keeley modern fuzz, over this any day, & it's only $150.
