Why is no one talking about the damn coolest drum intro ever?
Rock21 I think you’re right I’ve watched ten times!
Can not get enough.
I saw that kit live in Melvindale HS Michigan. I was just totally blown away! Before the show started. they brought out a special drum risers and started hammering the stands down to secure the drums. I thought to myself, man this is going to be good! They set up most of the kit but then brought out 2 more bass drums and mounted them above the drummer's head with air duct pipes curled around to send the sound out to the audience. I was just totally blown away !!
Saw that kit twice in 1970, once in the ATL with the MC5 and the other at the Atlanta Pop 70. Pep Perrine Live and In Person.
I noticed it too lol
For the younger folks... this is called, "Rock and Roll",
Amen Brother
Indeed!!
For old farts, theres a rather recent super group that do strictly early Seger covers. Ace. Seger Liberation Army.
Best drum intro.
Preach
Get off my lawn.
Song makes me want to crack open a miller highlife and talk cars with my dad
Go do it
Cracking one open this morning 9 am tuning up my baby🤘😂 but it's a Budweiser
Hell yeah
Around 1975 in Wheeling, WV I bought tickets for Montrose (Sammy Hager) with Golden Earring opening at a place that held about 500-600. Golden Earring cancelled at the last minute and was replaced by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band. I was disappointed because I never heard of them. By a mile the best opening act I ever saw. It was tremendous from beginning to end. They blew up shortly after that so I was lucky to see them in such a small venue. I would say Bob Seger 1975 version, AC/DC, and Bruce Springsteen we’re the best concerts I’ve seen.
Strohs
15 in 1975 I saw Bob in Boston 3 yrs in a row, 76,77, amazing live band, best memories, thanks Bob.
I remember our band playing warmup for Bob Seger. I was really intimidated by his drummer who had ductwork attached to his large toms mounted on stands. This is the first video I've seen that shows the drummer. He was so cool!
Phil - Metro Blues Band
This drummer scares me even today, & I'm into some crazy drummers like Peart, Bonham, Moon, Van Halen, Dave Lombardo and Dale Crover. This drummer could've created doom metal with that insane kit.
Charlie Martin, the drummer, was paralyzed in a car accident. You might be aware of this already
This wasn't Charlie, but Pep Perrine. Look for the video of "Lucifer," which really showcases him.
@@daveconleyportfolio5192 Yep, that's Pep....saw them in '68 at The Club in Monroe, Michigan....amazing.
@@TheseusTitan
This wasn't Charlie Martin.
He was in Bob's Silver Bullet Band.
He formed his own band and would play in local clubs and bars in the 90s.
No lip-syncing here.
Awesome I can't quit watching over and over. What a powerful vocal performance.
I saw this band Halloween night in 1971 opening for Jethro Tull. What a great night that was. He closed with this. Best days of my life.
where at? Flint?
@@johnjarou2357 Syracuse NY
@@nickevers9571 okey dokey. I know I saw both of those bands around the same time frame ,late 60s early 70s. Bob Seger system was actually considered a local band here in Michigan back then.
That drummer is one bad ass monster.
Especially with the suspended bass drums.
He made those drums and painted them silver.
Man, I love the drummers set-up!
He lags in spots. And not in a good way.
@@extramurous dude he's spot on. Sure it's not a metronome computer piece of timekeeping but that's how it rocked before machines. I can hear him slow down in a couple of places, but that's deliberate, to emphasise the deepness of the groove he's playing. Notice how he speeds up again to match the pace when the instrumentation kicks back in. It's as in the pocket as it gets. Great great drumming.
this is one bad ass song jg gutierrez
This kicks ass in every direction! Get'em BOB!
Man, you really hear the Mitch Ryder influences here in the youthful Seger. A little Grand Funk, too. What a talent.
Powerful Detroit rock and roll. All the youth of today should see this.
TALKIN' 'BOUT HEAVY MUSIC !!
I wonder if there are any videos floating around of “Heavy Music”
Explosive and dynamic. Just the way I like it
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan?
This is just bad ass!!!! Thanks for the clip!!
I've only seen pictures of this drum kit. Finally we have video evidence of this kit in it's natural habitat. LOL
Bon seger without the beard to a kick ass song
Bob grew a handlebar moustache with long connecting sideburns in 1972 or '73 and had facial hair ever since.
I love this early Bob Seger about as much as I dislike the later hits.
9 years from this he turned into Air Supply with We've Got Tonight. If I never hear that again, I won't complain.
Pep Perrine on drums - awesome!
Daaamn. That's how you do it. So much soul. Dynamite!!!
Pep Perrine the drummer ! With The Bob Seger System! Awesome memory
Yes..Pep Perrine was an awesome drummer and he definitely had his own sound and style!
I’d be happy if all I could listen to was rock n roll like this! The stones gave it the most and I wasn’t even nearly born
Bob Seger is simply the best of all time!
This is why Detroit was called "rock city" boys and girls. 👍
This is the Bob Seger System I used to go hear all the time in the early 1970s. It was an awesome experience to see them live. Dan and Pep may be gone now, but so glad that Bob is still going.
J Montgomery Living in Michigan I was amazed at how many people of your generation had Seger play at their school dances etc. What a great time and place for music.
Pep Perrine (“the drummer”) is still around, I believe... 😃👍🏼
Sadly, no.
Bob NEVER SOLD OUT
What must it have felt like to be blessed with a voice like that? Range, power, edge ... everything.
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan?
This is so cool. Thank you. Another video that makes the internet rich. The "Bob Seger System." Funny. Soooo 1970. Wow. Way cool.
The best song ever!! Ok…..yes he has more……a lot more!! Love you Bob Seger!! Even at 65 yrs old!
Pep Perrine was a beast. In fact, that whole dam band was
+LCM1978 Yes he was! Rock at its best!
+LCM1978 There's a version of "Lucifer" from this show that really showcases Pep -- blond hair, neck collar, muscles, wifebeater shirt.
An off-beaSt.
Great voice.
Badass thanks for putting this one on the air
I love this lost classic 🎸☺️
I love Bob Seger! Those drums are rockin'!
very nice!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing find !
All I can say is "WOW !!!" i have been a huge Seger fan since 1976. This is great. Thanks for sharing.
Brad Me too. I was 10 in 1976 when I fell in love with this song.
Even though I practically grew up on Seger's music, I can't recall seeing too many live TV performances of his from back in the day. Cool to see an act from that era actually singing the song and not lip-synching it for a change--that's refreshing, lol!
As far as I know, this is the only available live video of pre-Bullet Seger. You can go to the website shown on the video and get a DVD that also features "Lucifer" and "Song for Rufus," plus a variety of other acts who performed on Barry Richards' local TV shows.
This is so cool.
Listen to *Bob Belt*
Saw them at Daniel's Den, a teen club in Saginaw, MI, in the summer of '70 and it was just like this. PS - Bob starts his '17 tour out in Saginaw, as he's done in the past. Detroit and its 'burbs may claim him, but he's ours... Bob loves Saginaw...
Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Seger played the organ in earlier incarnations of this song. In one, he even held the mic while playing the organ! Forever Michigan rock!
That clip is on Y.T. Just watched it.
The quintessential, got famous playing in my dad’s garage band
Saw him about 1973 backing up Bachman Turner - he played keyboards then - great song to drink beer and dance to.
This was awesome ! The good old days and I was around some of those shows way back then. Pep Perrine was the best drummer I have heard. After The Bob Seger System Pep had been on the college crowd scene with a group called Pep's Energy. The lead singer's first name was Joe. Pep was also in a group more on a country western theme Band Rodeo was the name of the group. I introduced Pep to a girlfriend of mine in the late sixties. He married her. Thanks for sharing. You can find me at Facebook. The Bob Seger System years were great. Pep though as far as I am concerned is the best drummer out there.
Thank you for liking my aspirations and being one of my biggest fan, hope you don’t stop someday?
That drum set is a trip.
Always Amazing Since The Beginning..@FreeByrdWil
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan?
ladies and gentleman, MR BOB SEGER!!!!!!!!!
Incredible!
Bob segar - what a voice man!
For some reason when I heard this I thought he was a black guy so surprised to find out he wasn't love this song it does not get old
Such a cool video of Bob!
Raw! Rustbelt Soul
Just watching Bob curl that lip & growl “ugh!” STILL turns me on to this day!!! 😆❤️👍🏼
Bob is a fucking badass Singer!
1970 cleveland area wow Bob Seger system
so intense!
An all timer right here
He has such Enthusiasm when he sings for sure definitely has a great look on music nobody hardly does that anymore
I love the original recording because it sounded as if the drummer was getting tired at times (because of the speed-up-slow-down feel). This video is hard evidence that the drummer had no sense of time... how awesome is that!
witzerdog The drummers time is right on with Bob Seger's voice and rhythm guitar work.
bonerzslide Nope. That drummer is Drifty McDrifterson when it comes to keeping time. Everyone follows the drums lead.
***** Sorry Steve O... Pep Perrine only played with Seger for a few years and his tempo is all over the place. And if you can find a video of Seger saying, "I asked Perrine to speed up and slow down and have the tempo all over the place." Then I'll concede.
But... with that said, the "loose" drumming was one of the things I like about the original version. It doesn't feel the same when he plays in now.
Pep was pretty steady most of the time. On this version of "Gamblin' Man," Pep's tempo drags terribly in spots. When you look at the video, you can see that it is dragging when he is hitting the overhead bass drums. He is swinging his right arm from the left to the right overhead bass drum, and it is slowing the tempo terribly. You can tell that the band feels it too.
Hello Ken! Pep in my book is still one of the best drummers out there.
Ooooo~~ Laaaa~~Laaaaaa ! 🔥❣️🔥
You gotta Luv it !
Killer!
That bass player is hitting some mean licks
On the list of greatest RnR songs of all time!
Freakin-A ive never seen drums setup like that. Bunch of badasses they are
Great video! I'd hate the be drummer looking back at this, tho...
I love that drumming. Never seen them mounted on the side, though.
Wow first time i've ever seen Bob Seger with no facial hair so you know this is old.
One of my favorites. Performed up the road from my home in Bethesda!
Thank you for liking my aspirations and being one of my biggest fan, hope you don’t stop someday?
wow first real live version ive seen the others you can hear glenn in the back vocals..
Sweet!!
Wow, the man can holler !
What a great and historic clip!
Thank you for liking my aspirations and being one of my biggest fan, hope you don’t stop someday?
holy fuck does he ever sound good here
Fucking gold man! Everything ive found from Detroit rock scene 69/70 has just been great! Lots of English influnce in the gear and volume, but pure beef and steel Detroit sound....Ted, MC5, Stooges,Grand Funk.....yeah....
tirehead72 it was a special and unique scene. Compare it to the prominent scenes of the time (SF and LA) and one would be forgiven for thinking it came from outer space. It probably influenced more than any other music of the time, especially MC5 and the Stooges but it doesnt get that credit from people. It had Englands volume but I think it was a much more from the street type of sound, grit is best way i can put it. New York took it and ran with it in the mid 70s but this scene was where heavy AMERICAN rock n roll came from.
God old American Rock n Roll.....
W-O-W !!!
Love it.. London uk
When the keyboardist is headbanging you know it’s fuckin balls!
Adding six string to this kick ass song kicks it in the ass again like turning hard cider to apple jack.
Wow...that drummer!!!!!
Pure Gold
He's soooooo good
Way ahead of the times
Hard driving, good old, American Rock N Roll
I almost think the drummer slows down and speeds up on purpose :)
Who's the twit who disliked this video?
I bet it was Bob
some short sited, cross eyed guy, with a twitch in his mouse hand..hit the the wrong button..thats all it could be??? :)
no it was Ted Nugent
radio boys I remember this when I was in elementary school still rocks!!!
ROFL!
Drummer's not very good, I must say. No fill to that guy ...
That drummer is one of the best drummers in the country. Pep Perrine.
why does Bob hate his early shyte? am I wrong? love it and my dad still was carrying me in his sack at this time
None of his answers quite satisfies. People who love early Seger don't care about mono recording or vision conflicts with bandmates. My guess (and that's ALL it is) is that he was ambitious, and this stuff didn't get him to his goals. Also, how do you react if a fan tells you the last 30 years weren't as good as your first 10?
Holy Shit!
13 soulless people.
Interesting drum kit with 2 elevated bass drums....
The only Bob Seeger song I like. Way better than that “Silver Bullet” crap.
That drummer is reminds me of Animal from The Muppet Show
i just voted this song number one in the rock, country, and r&b charts
+al lavacca it's a good choice but the greatest rock'n roll song ever, is by the MC five-kick out the jams motherfuckers! PS but I do believe Bob Seger is the greatest rock'n roller who ever lived, and I'm not talking about a rock star which is totally different.
should have been huge, and not just a regional hit. Went nowhere in NY. Used to hear it on CKLW.....
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan?
This is "Driving home to feed Brandy" type of music.
Glenn Frey did the back ground vocals
Pep Perrine was the coolest in the 70's detroit area,
Glenn Frey sang back-up to this song for Bob Seger.
Can’t tell if he is in this video, poor quality but he is on the original version.
All in!
Drums baby!
Holy crap this rocks! No wonder Tarantino put this on the soundtrack. But what about the drummers suspended curved bass drums? I've never seen anything like that in my whole life and I'm a freaking drummer.
