My scraps go to squares to Blankets for Canada. They collect 8 inch squares to put together as blankets for people in need, shelters, family services, inner city neighborhoods. If you're in Canada, they can always use more squares.

If you make stuffed projects, like toys or pillows, you can use even your tiniest scraps to add to the filling...a little less traditional stuffing needed.

I learned to knit from my mum when I was 8. She makes incredible big teddy bears and I give her my yarn tails and other really small amounts to use as stuffing :) We've been doing it for years. It's an awesome way to combine both of our forces into a finished piece.

The Random Stripe Generator is a great tool to learn about color changing schemes for scarfs and other projects. I had so much fun with the random generator that I came up with some cool coloring ideas for projects. Mrs. Margaret comes up with the best ideas to improve on the crafts. Plus you can make pet toys out of left over scraps. I finished off two left over grey yarn scraps with making a bunny rabbit, plan to make more in future to use up the scraps. It was also so kind of you to help us improve on our own style technique. I bookmark the random stripe generator to my computer now I have some real fun with it. Thank you.

I love to use scraps! You can get so creative with them. I make blankets for animals at pet shelters. I have lots of fun making pretty doggy & kitty size blankets to keep them warm, cozy, and calm until their adopted. Nice tips on reducing the ole stash!!

Hi Margaret.. I just came across your excellent channel! I've been a crocheter for over 40 years and never knew that tip on how to calculate if I have enough yarn for a row... what a game changer!! I've always just used the yarn and then frog it if I run out.. not so much fun if you're making a bigger project or several rows of color. Thank you so much.. I love listening to your sweet voice and simple, easy to follow tips. In my 60's now and still love crocheting for charity as well as friends. My favorite thing to do lately has been to make hats in team colors and then finding the team's patch on eBay and sewing it to the front. It's something that is so appreciated by the sport's fans I know and has also brought me some business when their friends want one too! Take care.. I am a new subscriber. Your yarning friend in Southern California!

I didn't know that tip either, Gerri... as a matter of fact, I made it up! I needed something that didn't involve too much math and where I didn't have to leave my chair to figure it out! HA! Love your team hat ideas! My oldest son is in L.A... not sure when I'm going to get out there (I'm sure he'll be home for the holidays before i can make it out there.) He loves it!

I just about spit out my drink when I saw your sock knitted with Paton's Kroy striping yarn. I just finished a pair using that same yarn a few weeks ago!!! I'm loving your tips on using up scraps. I made a scrappy afghan/blanket over the winter for a friend of mine. I held 2 different colors together and used double crochet all the way through. I hope I get it shipped to my friend before next winter sets in. Ha!! lol

Making hats never failed. I do have a lot of yarn, a friend of mine gave some yarn, her mom doesn't crochet anymore so I ended with old yarn, funky colours, texture, and size, some are sport, bulky etc. I been making hats, purses and scarfs... I still have a lot left

One time I got some yarn handed down to me from that same situation! It took me ages to go through it and some of those older acrylics were horrible! Technology sure has helped out the yarn industry over the years!

one of my long time favorite things to do with the very small scraps (1.5 in and larger) is to tie them all into a ball and then turn that ball of scraps into monster grocery bag holders. each one is different and i find it fun to come across those little bits and remember the original project it came from....this even goes for the skinny ribbon and elastic that sometimes holds a pair of shoes together...basically anything goes

Hi Margaret! Thanks so much for the measurements for scrap yarn for SC/HDC/DC! What a terrific resource. I took a screen shot so I can record that when I get home later :-) And I have a little Addi, so the measurement for that scrap yarn will be really helpful as well. You have some very helpful ideas. I have never used the random stripe generator but will give that a try. As a charity crocheter/knitter also, I have lots of scraps. My favorite thing to do with the scraps is to turn them into granny squares and make blankets for donation. It is always a treat to get a new vlog of yours. Take good care. Peace, Sarah

I made most of them extra large and sometimes I put a first name on the top band. Some of my family members hangs them on their wall every Christmas.

I use scraps to make flowers, bows, and decorative things that I add to hats.
Preemie hats are great for scraps because you don't need much yarn at all. I've had three foster preemies and it's really hard to find hats for them that don't engulf their whole head. Preemies also have to be kept warm and hats help. Great charity item.❤️

Scraps are the best! I make hats and scarfs for the homless and I use every bit of my yarn. The small pieces I just add to each other and make frankenballs of yarn and use for cat mats or blankets. They even make cute hats and scarfs if you have the right combination of colors. I'm always looking for scrap ideas as the majority of my yarn hauls are donations from coworkers, friends and shopping sprees at the local goodwill. Thanks for sharing all your tips, very useful. I used that same technique you used for your 'cat mat' to use up scraps of wool and crocheted a large felted potholder that, after I machine felted it, was still just a tad bigger than a 9×13 baking pan. I gave it as a gift to my mom and she loves it. I used black wool on the whole thing and then two different colors of wool and, just like you did, would use a color til I ran out and then add another color. It turned out really thick, but it definitely protects a tabletop from a hot baking pan or even a cast iron skillet.

  • @krism1097

I love all of these ideas. I always end up with little bits of yarn that I can't do much with and while I mostly do big box yarn (Red Heart, Caron, Bernet, and Peaches and Cream) but I do very rarely treat myself with stuff from a local yarn store. I would recommend Magic Knot which I've recently discovered, for the big box yarn I would say look at Bella Coco who did it, it is really simple but hard to explain and she shows it the only way I understood it.
What I like to do is separate my yarn into light and dark and using Magic Knot that makes a Wonder Ball and rely on that, it is a bit busy but not overly so and could be made with as few as two colors in long turning or you can use a hundred different colors in short color changes or anything in between. My favorite color mash up is dark purple and white and I discovered it on accident (Red Heart Amethyst and Red Heart White).
I do have to say you've inspired me to crochet for charity (I can't knit and I am so jealous of those who can) I was always planning to do that but only after I've finished making the biggest things I want to. I've decided instead to work on things for charity while also doing things that I want to do (I do want to make things for charity but I also have things I want to make for myself or someone else) So I've started making things for charity to. But I do have a question I hope that since you wait to bring your things to (since I don't want to be going to donate stuff every time I finish only one project especially since I love to do sets) what should I do to keep the things clean and nice looking, do you think a simple bin would do?

I just store mine in a plastic bags. Actually, they're bags that cover our clothes when we pick them up from the cleaners! I knot the end where the hanger comes out and fill the bag. Since it's clear, I can see what's in it!

I also make critter blankets using scrap yarn & the "magic knot". Do a solid granny square with the one strand of magic knot yarn & one strand of black or white or cream. I use an N hook. Our humane shelter asks for 12", 24", or 36". Sometimes, I just "magic knot" as I go along. With one strand of black, it gives a very pretty pattern. Or use 3 strands of yarn, P/Q hook, then SC each stitch. Had to try a few times to get the desired width.

Debra Jahnke I do this too. I make 2 big balls from 2 contrasting colours (my current project is yellows for the background, and purples for the repeating small circles pattern) and just follow the simple graph for the pattern repeat, working in the ends as you come to each join. I graduate the colours from dark to light and back again. Sometimes you get high contrast, and sometimes a subtle effect between the two colours. It is so, so easy to do, and the result never fails to impress. People think it is a lot more complicated than it is.

The yarn that ties the pom pom needs to be tied very tight. It helps if the pom pom is very full as well. I’ve heard of some people sewing buttons on the pom pom and a crochet buttonhole on the top of the hat so you can remove the pom for washing. That way you could gently hand wash it. Some use snaps instead of buttons. I put my hats in a approximately sized lingerie mesh bag. Leave a little room in the mesh bag for water to circulate around the hats a little but not enough for them to be twisted up when washing.

I made a hat for my self out of a green variegated and a pink variegated cotton after Prince passed away and it became the talk of the neighborhood most of my neighbors knit and crochet. It has become my Raspberry beret. my neighbor wanted to have the directions so I had to sit down with the hat and figure out how I had made it because I was just crocheting I didn't have a real pattern in mind.I have crocheted three more, one for my Grandson, one for my husband and one for a friend of the family. Also I buy yarn and fabric at a local thrift store but only what I can use (ha ha). So one day I was there I saw a zippered bag like the kind sheets come in it was just stuffed with yarn but it looked like it had just been thrown in not rolled into neat little balls it was just a mess. So I bought it without opening it. Well I was pleasantly surprised, someone had taken about 35 strands at a time and tied into ten foot lengths in three places, there is about 15 bundles all ready for a project so I started by untying a set with pink and a set with blue and crocheted my Grandchildren each an Easter Egg for them I stuffed them with candy instead of stuffing. I will use some to make scarfs and hats for the same local thrift store.

Just watched your video, and thoroughly enjoyed it. You had such great ideas. I too do all charity knit and crochet. These days, more crochet. My hands are no longer fond of working knitting needles it seems. Most of charity work is for newborn infants, donated to our local Hospital where they like to present each new baby with a hand crafted garment or blanket. And I do some Hats for the Homeless in Winter, also locally donated. It gives me a lot of opportunity to use scrap bits and balls of yarn, keeps my hands occupied and me out of trouble, and gives me something useful and worthwhile to do with my time. I hope to be using some of your ideas soon. Have a great day!

I DO! As a matter of fact, I think ALL solid colors can be great as a base. Some are not as versatile as gray but they can work with the right colors. If your particular dark green has warm undertones (probably contains more yellow) then choose warmer scraps. Alternatively, if it has cool undertones (probably contains more blue) then choose cooler scraps.

    HI Mary Margaret,
I have just been sorting all of my craft things, so this is topical for me. I made a point to sort based on how I was going to use my yarn for example, is this planned for a sweater? Pop all sweater quantities together, planned for a blanket well give it it's own space, no plan then sort by weight/fibre. I also made a point to make up project kits with pattern, needles, yarn all together so I can just pick one when I want something new, they are all from the top items on my queue so I know I would be happy with any of them being finished and I have already been working on 2 of them :0)
    Hugs, Mel

I made my own yarn cakes 😁 I have just watched your destash & knitcrate giveaway, I am sorry to hear you have not been well & you have Limes disease. Sending you all my love & good wishes 💜 💕 💟 Erica x

Thank you, Erica, but it's ok! Lyme is scary but it's not the end of the world!

Zooper dooper holders are fantastic. I make them all the time. Fantastic stocking stuffers for xmas here in Australia. I also donate them to kinders and child care centers.

Ah, yes... those are great scrap ideas but I confess I had to look up what a Zooper Dooper was! We call them ice pops! Ha! Thanks for mentioning this good idea AND for the Aussie vocabulary lesson, Alice!

Very informative.you use the knitting machines.are the measurements the same when you work with needles?

No, because the gauge is different. I demonstrated how I determine how much yarn I'll need when knitting with needles in this video.
