~~ Saturos Battle ~~
Saturos Battle. So many fond memories... It's probably my favourite track from the whole Golden Sun 1+2 soundtrack. And one of my favourite tracks of all time. I've wanted to cover/restore that music for a while now. I hope I did it justice! I took extra care with the recording and mixing, and went a bit crazy with the video :)
~~ Details about the restoration process ~~
Tools used: GBA Mus Riper (midi and samples extraction), agbplay (synth restoration) and Reaper.
Hardware: Roland SC-88 Pro, Roland JV-1080, expansion card SR-JV80-05 World, and Alesis DM5.
Midi files: the sequences are extracted directly from the game but need to be heavily modified in order to play them on the physical modules.
Sounds: most samples have been identified over the years, but some sounds come from my own research.
Synths: in Golden Sun, synths are specific to the internal audio engine, they are completely separate from the other instruments. ipatix managed to reverse-engineer those synths and made the code available on github. I'm using his tool, agbplay, to export them from the game in high quality (at a higher sample rate than what the GBA is capable of)
Drums: Golden Sun 1 uses samples from the SC-88 but on Golden Sun 2, Motoi Sakuraba changed all the samples. While some of them have been identified and come from the Alesis DM5, most samples still haven't been found to this day. I've extracted the samples from the game, denoised, re-panned and cleaned them.
~~ Thanks ~~
Mega thanks to Bregalad (GBA Mus Ripper) and ipatix (agbplay). I would never have been able to do those versions without their incredible work.
Massive thanks to the VGM Instrument Sources community, and especially FreeJusticeHere for his invaluable advice and help!
Special thanks to Coaltergeist and Cyanne for inspiring me!
Original song composed by Motoi Sakuraba. #GoldenSun #RestoredOST
"Mars adept so hot headed he picked a 1v4 fight on top of Mercury lighthouse. What a madlad" -ledabot
And held his own, too! Even if he still ultimately lost
Saturos: These hands rated E for Everyone.
He didn't die... Saturos is a hero
Saturns is HIM
That sudden shift in tone at 0:45 is why golden sun will forever be my favourite game.
Gotta love Motoi Sakuraba's prog rock roots and how it comes through in this soundtrack. The key changes and tempo changes are just so rad
Golden Sun has a different tone than the rest of Motoi Sakuraba's works but it still maintains that siganture Sakuraba as in Tales of, Star Ocean or Valkyrie Profile games. Those are the most notable of course. But you knew this. :)
Rhytmh gets all out wack at that point, couldn't keep up. Always loved the chord change at 1:17 tho!
probably the cleanest version of this song ive heard
This battle theme alone hearing it in the first boss battle is what started my drive in the golden sun series. Probably one of the greatest titles to hit the GBA console
Yo uploaded two weeks ago??? Golden Sun community is alive? (Also this is so clean, thank you!)
The Golden Sun community will never die, my friend! :) If only Nintendo could see it..
This theme is the best, it really made me feel like it was going to be the final battle of the game.
Ikr? I was actually disapointed the battle was over so quickly because the music was the best from the entire soundtrack.
The best battle theme of the franchise! It sounds so clean here!
Man, this song still makes me smile all those years later. Such a perfect boss theme.
What a beast, ready to ignite the current of destiny for his convictions.
I think this format is cool where you show the in-game sprite and the DAW.
Thanks! Yeah I'd love to do that for each video, but just for this one it actually took me longer to do the video, than the audio itself!! (re-playing the game to get the exact footage I wanted, record all the parts and edit them together). I'd rather focus on restoring the music! :)
@@JusteDni That's fair. Thanks for replying!
Golden Sun forever!! 👊
I've never heard it sound this good... Thank you so much.
This was always my favorite track when I was young. I would put the gba speaker right up to my ear as I listened to this theme. Thank you for allowing me to relive that.
I'm glad I'm not the only one :D
Though, admittedly, I did that more with the Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland.
I did as well while sleeping. It gave me good dreams
Always nice to hear some tracks like the touhou midi songs and some GBA/Falcom ones played on the SC-88 Pro a lot of them were thought for. Excellent travail !
Thank you! :)
This is without a doubt the best battle theme I've ever heard, shame it was for a really early game battle.
It's changed me as a person.
It's the last real RPG after Shining the Holy Ark.
It's no wonder the Star Magician had this theme, what a fun fight.
What I love most about this track, beyond everything including this gorgeous remaster, is how heroic it sounds. Instantly we can tell that this isn't just a regular boss, and it stands as a battle theme right alongside Isaac and Felix.
That's why it made such an impact, even before we learn the truth of things. They seeded the heroism of Saturos and Menardi in the music and left it to game 2 for us to realize, no, that song is heroic for a reason...
God I love this game. Your remasters are making me remember just how much. Thanks for your work.
I disagree with that, I think this song IS meant for Isaac and his team, instead of Saturos.
It's like a "rematch where you win this time" kind of song, and unless I'm mistaken we don't see this track being associated with Saturos and Menardi anywhere later in the games.
Just wanted to compliment these works again! Your restoration is just fantastic.
Amazing work! This brings back my memory to the early days with my wife, she made me try out Golden Sun on her Game Boy Advance and I immediately decided that I had to complete it! One night after going out together we stayed until 3:30 in the car outside his parents' house to complete crossbone island...😁
Ps: waiting for the Venus lighthouse theme 😉
Great job, please continue your hard work !
Thanks for your support! :)
Still didn't lose impressive melody. And very similar to Original version.
Good work.
Man my childhood🥹
Mmm to hear it like this, truly amazing.
The game sea of stars remind me of golden sun the music, game play everything!
This is probably the best version of this theme available on youtube rn! Are you planning on releasing extended versions of these at some point? I'd love to add this to my music playlist that I listen to while playing Smash 😅
Either way, you've won a new subscriber my friend :) you've done an amazing job with all of these!
@@simonzuni Thanks for your kind words! It means a lot to me that people appreciate my work :) I can definitely do an extended version of Saturos Battle. How long would you like it to be? 10 min? Or longer?
@@JusteDni That's awesome man! and thank you for this rush of nostalgia. This was/still is one of my favorite games. As for the potential extended version, I've seen people on UA-cam do anywhere from 10min, to 30min to 1 hour lol if you ask me personally (for my purposes) Smash fights typically last for 7 minutes with a bit extra if it ends in a tie, so really 10 min is more than enough for me 😅. PS: Sorry i didn't respond earlier, my notifications are an absolute mess LOL
@@simonzuni haha no worries! Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/h8hUZlnzIUc/v-deo.html ;)
This is so slick it’s ridiculous
One word: Ilikethatshititsallmychildhoodthisisliterallymyfavoritegameofalltime 😙👌 or maybe more than one with: that's awesome dudu, a very good job 😂
This sounds so good. Can you do more of the soundtrack?
Amazing!!!
❤
Incredible work.
Fucking Star Magician...
黄金の太陽配信開始されたら皆でやろうな
I hope one day that I'll be able to replay both games with your restored OST injected in it, like the SNES MSU-1 romhacks

Bravo! Would love for you to check out my version! its a different type of remaster!
Somewhat less morale boosting than the original and seems like notes contributing to intensity are lacking in intensity or simply lacking
