  • Accentus Music presents a new DVD/Blu-ray release available in January 2015:
    Memorial Concert for Claudio Abbado
    LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, Andris Nelsons
    Isabelle Faust, violin
    Bruno Ganz
It was a deeply affecting and appropriate farewell. The spirit
of Claudio Abbado, the great conductor and founder of
orchestras who died in January 2014, was present in music,
words, and silence. Thousands upon thousands came to the
Basilica di Santo Stefano in Bologna and the Piazza della
Scala in Milan to pay their last respects. In Lucerne, the
members of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA paid tribute
to this extraordinary man and friend with a deeply moving
concert - “The emotional intensity was unbelievable; this
could only be achieved by true musicians, by those capable
of love.” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) Friends and associates look back fondly on Claudio Abbado and speak of how they experienced these moments of grief and farewell.

We have lots of great conductors. We had only one Abbado. RIP Maestro.

We have a lot of mediocre conductors and a few great ones would, I think, be more accurate.

Best? Why and how? There was Nikisch, there was Furtwängler, there was Karajan?...

@@novagerio9244 I dont think you can find any entitled to answer to your question abou how and why in here. You have to trust Berliner Philarm. who stated Abbado as the greatest director in the history of their orchestra, up even to legendary HvKarayan. Furtwangler is out of contest, his bizarre psycho-cerebral metaphysical way of conducting was joked by half of world orchestras.

Difficult to watch this till the end without tears in your eyes... I think Abbado WAS indeed conducting the Allegro Moderato of Schubert's Unfinished. He was right there with the baton in his hands... can’t you feel him?

      An admirer from Rome
you are perfectly right, è commovente - What an exquisite and extremely moving musician in each of his performances he is, this can be understood not only following him in the admirable videos, but in hearing his smooth voice speaking in his graceful musical Italian with a slightly German inflexion • so to say, an epitome of his whole career as an international musician rooted in Europe

What a great director has the world lost. I was lucky to attend his 2012 concert where he directed Egmont full score and the Mozart requiem and those incredible 50" total silence of the audience at the end of the concert were so moving and all of us thinking that probably we would not see him at the next festival. M. Nelssons should take him as an example of modesty and simplicity. One doesn't need to make all that cinematic gestures and faces to give his indications to such an orchestra of such a dimension and skill. Nuance and again modesty please. This is not Hollywood . This is music for the sake of music and a composer and the audience at the festival is really one that understands music whether at the stalls or at the last mezzanine. Riccardo Chailly has been appointed as musical director from 2016 to 2021 and will give the opening performance of the 2016 summer festival with Mahler's 8th that Abbado was to perform in 2012 but had to cancel most probably due to his declining health conditions. This is a great choice, Chailly has the stature to take the follow up of the great director and founder of this probably best orchestra in the world.

+jvdesuit1 Nelsons is a great conductor, which is why Lucerne and other top-tier orchestras around the world invite him. He is a kinetic conductor to be sure, but his gestures are genuine and to imply he is "Hollywood" is completely uncalled for. Please take note of the exaggerated gestures of the concert master / first violin who is obviously a fine musician as well. Mr. Nelsons drew astonishing music from this wonderful orchestra and did Mr. Abbado proud.

+jvdesuit1 The people that think they love music, but do not like people that show emotion, should wear dark glasses, close their eyes, or sit in the back of the hall.

    • @jvdesuit1
      @jvdesuit1 8 років тому +2

William D'Elia "he is "Hollywood" is completely uncalled for": William I'VE NEVER WRITTEN THAT or else a word or negation has been missed while typing which is sometimes the case when I write. On the contrary he is probably the only one conductor with Haitink for example to be so humble, forgetting the camera which many others instead are fascinated or hypnotized for example Dudamel, Rattle, Barenboim to mention a few.
What has always fascinated me with Abbado is this concentration on his orchestra and nothing else. The outside world doesn't exist anymore as soon as he steps on the stage. And it remains like that even when the audience is cheering him. As I said I had the chance to attend his concert in 2012 with the Egmont score and Mozart Requiem and that was absolutely fascinating especially that full minute of silence at the end of the concert. We were all performers and audience in unisson with this great musician.
