- Contractor's bids for remodeling, new builds or a simple renovation are confusing to say the least! There's no standard form to evaluate if the contract will protect you during the construction of your home. So, I've laid out the 8 pieces of info I want to see in the contract or bid. If they aren't in there yet, don't panic! It's a negotiation with your contractor and you can make it a legal, binding document that protects you and your family!

My contractor seems to be an honest person, and I know him from a friend, I plan to have him remodel my bathroom and he never mentioned anything about contract. I asked him to do some small work and it was great and cheap, so I wonder how to get this contract thing with him for the remodel, he clearly doesn't have a template of contract, should I write one for him to sign instead?
Absolutely! When it’s a larger project, it’s protection for both of you. I’m sure he won’t mind having it spelled out and for you to do it for him. Be clear and detailed and leave room for if and how changes will be handled. My template was written for me by a detailed client ( lawyer that didn’t like my version) and I’ve used it ever since!
