Thanxs for making this video. Good info and well instructions. Maybe I need a lot of hydraulic too, but price kept me of. Good to see good cheaper options.
good video but per Parker specs and good year specs when installing a reusable end couple once outer portion is installed onto the hose you should then place outer body into vise to properly hold for installation of second part of coupler. this prevents twisting of the hose from body which can unseat hose and weaken connection and also avoid tearing or damaging outer skin of hose. never install a high pressure reusable end coupler in the above way.
Thank you for a well-organized and systematic analysis of options and instructions. Exactly what I was looking for as I am replacing 6 hoses and got sticker shock going back to the tractor dealer. The video could improve with the suggestions from other (blasting music at the beginning, better angle to see the actual pressing and die). Nevertheless, it answered all of questions I was struggling with. Well done.
I got a Bachelor's degree in hydraulics and pneumatics today, thanks to you and other presenters on UA-cam. Just curious, mostly, and curiosity as-swaged, if you will. Thanks a lot.
Great video! Can you tell me what size and type hydraulic hose you are using? I am trying to figure out if this method is right for me. I have an old tractor that needs pretty much all new hoses. Will this swager work for R2 hose? Did you get the dies and pusher from Sonny's too?
I love your jacket Marmot Mnt Works. I just bought a shirt yesterday. I have a Marmot Gortex waterproof down sleeping bag 1.9 lbs for backpacking that Iv'e used for 40 years. I'll be making my own hydraulic hoses from now on, thanks.
Great comment. Thank you. Owned a car wash for past 13 years…. Marmot is high quality gear great for cold and wet climate. Prefer it over north face and spider. Gore is actually really nice as well.
I’ve been using ratchets and sockets a lot lately in places where I would have previously used a wrench. Usually it ends up being a lot easier, and I get a snugger connection where a wrench would have started striping out the flats. This is a place where I’d probably give a socket a try.
Not here. The problem is you want constant pressure on the fitting. So when the ratchet reaches it’s limit where you back off to re ratchet. You lose the tension on the fitting. With the wrench, you’ll notice I never let go. I am keeping constant pressure. The metal is warm and being formed… you want it this way so you should not use a ratchet and socket. Even though it’s much easier on you and your arms! Haha. Trust me
Thanks for the video. May I suggest swiveling the vice? That way you have a greater range of motion. As others said, use an impact tool to make the job easier. Lastly, if you make another video, please mount the swage crimp tool on the near side of the vise so we can see.
In the United States we have a hydraulic crimper I bought mine online for around $180 but I guess harbor freight has it for around $70 and with this crimpers you do not need no vice. And why am I saying all of this about the prices. Because you first tried to help me by showing me how to do it. Thank you and God bless you friend
Hi, Good Video! But before you completely finish, should you ensure the hose is clean on the inside? Like getting a piece of foam/rubber, putting it one end and then blowing it with the air compressor out the other end? That way it clears any swarf/turnings- or other debris left behind any other manufacturing processes?
Hey hi your video from what I can make out due to bad sound was still good informative I’ve always wanted to learn how to install and make hydraulic lines being a semi truck owner it always comes in handy thanks

I have a 17" hose with 3/8" O ring face seal straight ends. ffx-04-06. O'Reillys wants $55, online store delivered is $38 [no tax] and the reusable fittings are $50+ the hose, so maybe $60. Hard to justify the reusable fittings, especially since no one ever seems to reuse them, unless the hose is long and large and the machine is down with the break near the end.
Been a hydraulic engineer for over 10 years now. I do not rate the re use fitting. They blow off so often. I don’t rate the one pice fitting aswell, especially if it’s Parker. They crack half the time crimp them. Manuli fitting are the best in my opinion
What a coincidence. I just bought hose and reusable fittings from Discount Hydraulic Hose, arrived today. Everything looks good. Amazing customer service, fast shipping, good price. (16$ for a reusable fitting)
Haha nice. I get hose from there too. I miss older days. I been doing this for 11 years. Fittings have doubled in price. And hose too! Quality is way down also. So you’re paying double. And the quality is half as good. But at least you’re saving a lot of money by doing it yourself. A standard 1/2in hose with swivel fittings 6 foot. Cost about $40 bucks if not more from my local hose store. It’s crazy. So right now I can make that size hose for about $10.
If he invested a couple thousand dollars more maybe, but these particular fittings are actually designed to be swaged. They can be crimped but are actual swage fittings. He mentioned several times about the excess cost of having a swage machine over the cost of reusable fittings, I think he got it right for his application. He got the job done at minimal cost and has a field repairable hose (at least one end) Swaging and crimping are two different processes, and most crimp machines can't be taken into the field without an external power source. Being able to swage or using reusable fittings are both slower, you're right there, but with a couple wrenches he's got a machine running right where it sets.
@@albertpeugh9367: would a reusable fitting work with a 30HP John Deere tractor hose. My plan is feed the No-fitting end through the brackets then attach a reusable fitting.
Minor thing, Weatherhead is actually a division of Eaton, not Parker. Some important things worth mentioning, never mix and match brands of hose and hose ends. I've seen people do this time and again only to have the end blow off. Manufacturers design their crimp fittings to work on their specific hoses and some even make different fittings for one and two-wire hose. Mixing brands could have serious consequences and could lead to ends blowing off and potentially hurting someone. Also, when crimping a hose, you need to know the manufacturer's crimp specs/dimensions, otherwise, you have no idea if you installed the end correctly. Unless you like cleaning up oil spills and taking unnecessary risks, when uncertain, get it done by a professional!
Gates fittings are my favorite. I get a lot of sonnysdirect since it’s a car wash website so they have all the proper fittings. For hose I get on discount hydraulic hose. Weatherheas by Eaton and Parker are the top two brands. I get double braided.
Of course!! My power washer hose is 3/8 so I only have two hoses in the place. In order for you to do this you would need a 3/8 dye and 3/8 pusher. So for me it made more sense to use reusable fittings since whenever the power washer breaks. It always breaks right at the end by the handle. Since it usually have a nice bend. So I’ll cut it. Undo the fitting and redo it. Faster than using the swage machine
I can see having that re-usable fitting on a service truck dealing with Hydraulics as one of the systems and finding a hose leak, cutting it with a cutoff wheel and putting that fitting on until a manufactured hose can be obtained. If the equipment is down, that is a cheap fix to get going again.
DON'T use never seize on reusable fittings. Some hydraulic pumps don't handle solid lubricants very well. One stray drop/glob can make for an expensive fix, or a diagnostic headache later. Just use bit of the working fluid to lubricate the end.
A an ASE Master Tech since 1978, I would agree. But perhaps not shown or explained in the video as well as it could be, on a fitting that carries a different juice inside, no one uses “Anti-Sieze” on the open end, tip or orifice, only starting two or three threads up. Those who do it all over the fitting and/or inside only don it once. This is long enough to see the fluid contaminate your system, degrade your fluid, cause mechanical failures at the pumping device or simply watch it pop off. Either way, good point. You only screw some up bad in life once normally, then your wallet weighs less, unemployed, pay alimony or your dead.
when building a reusable hose, you should absolutely use a mandrel to prevent cutting the inside of the hose. Also using anything other than hydraulic fluid as a assembly lubricant will contaminate the fluid.
Tried using one of those for air hose. The outer layer of the hose I was trying to fix was deteriorating. No matter how I cut the hose, the interior wires would splay out and not allow the anti-clockwise application of the outer shell. Some number of $$ wasted before I ordered replacement hose.
Karla Perez Castro The swage machine was bought on eBay. It’s a Parker. Many manufactures make swage machines. All you need to know is to make sure the dye and pusher are compatible with the fittings. Also different hose takes different fittings. But the hose company will let you know which fittings will work or not work

Without it and the force involved, the fitting may lock to the die and the die lock up to the crimper. Don't use standard grease. Use graphite based only because you have to apply it less.
You might want to warn your viewers about the reusable. One of the biggest mistakes is someone putting an R2 reusable shell on an 100r1 hose. They should make certain that the reusable is compatible to the hose. PS: Impossible to put an R1 shell to an R2 hose. Just saying. PSS: The shells on the reusable are always marked r1 or r2
You're absolutely right, they must be on the right hose. However, I did see what I thought was impossible, a 100R1 reusable on a 100R2 hose. I won't go into details, but lets say these particular people were a few bricks short of a load. They put warnings to not install fan belts while the engine is running due to people like them. They skived the 100R2 hose. Really, I'm not kidding. They managed to put it on, then blew it apart and got mad at whom ever sold them the fittings. I did them (and us) a favor and gave them some credit towards a new hose for all their reusable fittings. Some people just shouldn't try DIY way, it doesn't become them.
I looked up the tool it's a 1000.oo double what you stated. That's without the dies of which you will need one for every size of fitting you use. In my experience a shop made hyd hose with crimped fittings costs about 1/2 to 2/3 what same hose costs if you buy reusable fittings. So if you have to replace it your saving money with reusable fittings and you can (with hose if you have it) fix it on the spot with no more than two wrenches and a knife. Edit: I've never had any problem with reusable fittings outdoors in fact I've reused them on snowplows old snowplows.
So it takes me years to get my kid to use an adjustable wrench correctly, with the movable jaw orientated to grip the nut on the tighten stroke, and now he shows me this - "Hey, the guy is flipping the wrench every which way!"
I had a hydraulic crimping machine myself. Recently the fitting keep popping off the pipe after install. I can assure that there is nothing wrong at the installation side. What can I avoid this problem while crimping the pipe?
There is a chart that gives the finished crimp diameter for the different size fittings. Use a micrometer or dial caliper to check that the finished crimp went small enough. Also I have been told it is better to keep the hose and fitting with the same manufacturer. For example for Parker hose use Parker fittings. HTH
Ronald Adams 110% spot on. My family owns a Hydraulic and Industrial Hose shop, as we’re a Gates Distributor. On each of our crimpers we have charts and books with the specs and what the OD of the crimp should be along with s micrometer. We set up all of our customers with crimpers with the same chart. And using the same manufacturer is very important. Gates with Gates, Parker with Parker. Completely different specs among the different brands.
Thanks I’m buying a sewage machine I’m tired of buying from auto parts store idiots , today made 3 trips to Napa because the idiot left hose to short, 2nd put wrong size fitting, 3 put wrong size fitting again
I own a hydraulic shop and have been making hoses for over 35 years now, the last thing we want to here is "you S*B, you screwed up" at 3:00am (or any time of the day as far as that goes) so we have our customers, along with us verify the length(s) before we start, this has almost eliminated the "I said......" in the conversations. It also gets the customer involved and it also proves 2 sets of eyes is better than 1. I don't get offended when a customer corrects my measuring a hose or the fitting size I pull, it saves a mistake and a very mad customer. Just food for thought.
I don’t know about any of you, but having a gas heater over the hydraulic unit could be a fire hazard. If a hydraulic hose sprung a leak and hosed down the heater that could be a problem.
If you are making so many hoses you need to invest in a better crimping machine taking to long time is money .. never put the hose onto a dirty floor. You need correct training before crimping high pressure lines hydraulic oil is very dangerous.

At the time of the video. That was the price. Try looking on eBay. They often pop up for much less.
Video is Dec. 2016, prices do change.
Dang, I want a knife that can cut hydraulic hose! I have to use a chop saw. 😉
Most people lubricate the end to slide on easier.
Where can I buy that machine
Verry good videos
If the reusable fitting isn't 2 piece and doesn't come apart how do you put it on the hose?
Please watch the video again. The reusable is two pieces and comes apart
@@MasteringHow-To Yes, the one you show. I have a reusable that is not 2 piece. Do you know that one?
Sample of BSP flange
Unfortunately, default sound level is too low. Hard to follow.
So it takes me years to get my kid to use an adjustable wrench correctly, with the movable jaw orientated to grip the nut on the tighten stroke, and now he shows me this - "Hey, the guy is flipping the wrench every which way!"
Richard Raucina first mistake was making him use an adjustable
@@bossup825 Yeah, but we can't live without them. A 15" Cresent and a 20" pair of Channelocks are pretty indispensable
never be scared of spending money on good eqipment
10:10 IMPACT!!!
Dev Everything You never want to use an impact as it will swage/crimp the fitting too fast. By hand is best.
pulse it
Dev Everything what’s that mean ?
@@MasteringHow-To Probably "drr, pause to think about the weather, then drr again, then pause again, repeat". Something like that.
Completely different specs among the different brands.

to bad theres no option for antique hose, cuz "they dont make that anymore" huyuk huyuk, says the helpful hardware man.
Gest india ma job kre raha hoo ma
Just food for thought.
swaaaaage. (long ā) Not swidge. :p
The same people like to use fish plates instead of flitch plates too, lol
very informative but the camera man sucks. thanks
Michael Liburd Camera woman.. my Fiancé... haha
That explains it. in that case fantastic job (Y) thanks again for the information.
swage machine right now on ebay for $250
I don’t know about any of you, but having a gas heater over the hydraulic unit could be a fire hazard. If a hydraulic hose sprung a leak and hosed down the heater that could be a problem.
Hydraulic oil isn’t flammable
What the hell do you need latex gloves for? Wait I understand now, you dont want to get your tools dirty.

Contact me please 😫🙏🙏 I want this machine
If you are making so many hoses you need to invest in a better crimping machine taking to long time is money .. never put the hose onto a dirty floor. You need correct training before crimping high pressure lines hydraulic oil is very dangerous.
