Same here! I got the full setup from Sweetwater and it's perfect! Plus I saved about $2,000 over an inferior Gibson guitar! I'm loving the neck shape and feel!

Lololol hey man. I bought an H7 a month or so ago and have had some problems with it. So I did a youtube search and found this video. I live in the Philippines now but you were my luthier in Tallahassee =) what a small world! When you said Folkstone guitars I almost passed out lol

I have a Sire L7, and I wouldn't change a thing. The pickups in it are brighter than your typical PAF, but once you reign them in, they're wonderful. They have extra clarity as well.

Got mine 3 weeks ago (H7V) and I love the P90's. Sire's strong spot is matching their pickups on every guitar and model I've heard. Mine was setup by Sweetwater and have to admit they hit everything perfectly. Nut slots, intonation, string height and neck relief. IMO every guitar needs some setup from a qualified luthier, it really does make all the difference in the world! Also makes playing your guitar a lot more fun too!

That's a great tip about sanding and polishing the nut slots.

Thanks for the "high nut slot check" trick - I don't feel any difference, but yeah, I do pull the A on the G string 2nd fret a touch sharp. Will proceed carefully with fret slot files.

Recently got my new Sire l7v directly from Sire. Took about a week to get it, free shipping, no issues. Guitar is perfect, no nut adjustment needed. Lowered the action to high e 1.25 m with no buzzing. Intonation is great.
    Only 2 small issues:
    1. Fingerboard is a bit scratchy when bending. Goes away with playing and some fretboard lube.
    2. Input plastic plate broke with tightening. The nut came loose. New one coming from Sire.
Will probably replace with a metal one but having trouble finding a replacement that is the same screw hole size.

After years of not being able to play a new Ibanez acoustic electric I loaned it to a friend whose dreadnought Gibson was in the shop. I found out he couldn't play it either. Further years down the road I finally figured out what was wrong. Its nut was also too high. I took it to a luthier who didn't see the problem at first, but a phone conversation cleared that up. Once he was finished the guitar played like I had always hoped it would've. He said that nut but (which he replaced and set-up properly) was the highest he'd seen!
I'd stopped performing by that time, else I would've taken it back. I've played electrics 99% of the time, but I've always loved the sound of acoustics in certain styles, none of which have I ever felt I mastered, but was hoping to learn. What I found was a guitar that macerated my fingertips in nothing flat. The action at the 12th fret was fine and the intonation perfect.
I thought of my own test for checking the nut height. It probably isn't original, but I didn't hear about it from anyone else. I put a capo on the first fret and bingo - the guitar became playable.

Thank you sir, I appreciate this info. About to order the next model of this in black from Sweetwater. No red which I might have popped for. Retiring a second time in a year and I’ve been studying on becoming a luthier but no hands on except a little on my Epiphone J-200. I see that sending these through the plek machine is an option but for $299 I can get a start on buying the gear to do my own setups. The high nut is something I’ve seen in videos before but your video takes care of the problem, model specific. Not that it matters as this is a common process for all guitars but it just makes this setup a bit more special. Thanks again.

If you hold down a string at each fret then press on and off at the next higher fret the clearance can be observed.
Usually, new guitars have a ski jump on the first 3 frets with the clearance of an open string fretted at the first fret being the highest.
Even on my American Fenders the nut was cut really high.
I use a feeler gauge and leave the clearance of the lower strings at the first fret a lot higher when unfretted. The bottom E and A strings can drone without fret buzz when picked hard.

Recently got an H7 as well and absolutely love it. Your video explains very well why my lower frets just don’t ring true. I will check the tune with my head stock tuner the way you did an I bet it comes out sharp as well. Time to finally get some nut files from Stew Mac and get to work. Thanks for the video. Subscribed!

Most manufacturers leave room for the owner to set up their own action. Not everyone likes the same thing. I'm glad they left this available. Now, if only I could buy a lefty SB.

I have just bought the P90 version of this Guitar, intonation of mine is fine, and the action looks lower than that one, I would like the action lowered just slightly, if 335's are your thing, these are amazing guitars, I had an SG that the same issues with nut too high.

Great informative video, well done. Got my H7 in vintage sunburst recently and it’s an awesome instrument but as highlighted in video this is the only issue I have is the chording on the lower register. I guess it’s time to buy a set of nut files so I can correct all my guitars. Good job.

Enjoyed your set-up on the Sire H7. I needed to see this video. I'm in the market for a new guitar Tomorrow, February 8, 2022 I'm going to pick up my new Sire H7 in red at Guitar Center here on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood California. I just subscribed. Thank you for a good paced and informative post!

Thanks for the video. I recently came across the H7 and am undecided between this and an Epiphone. Guessing you're familiar with the Epi 335 model. Between this and the H7, thoughts?

Good vid but it really wasn't a Setup video. I ordered a Sire LC L7 for my son. It will arrive in 6 weeks and I would like to do a complete setup or whatever is necessary.
You didn't show the truss rod adjustment nor the intonation.
Did the guitar come with a truss rod wrench? If not, does it use a standard wrench?

Hey buddy, I have a question for you. I’m building a semi hollow. It will have 2 humbuckers and a piezo bridge. I saw a previous video you did about 7 yrs ago and with a Gibson studio. You wired it pretty much how I want to wire this build of mine…2V, 1T(master), and a piezo volume. I don’t know an awful lot about wiring. Would you be interested in giving me some guidance on wiring this project? By the way, I intend to coil tap/split the humbuckers. Thanks much either way. D

Is checking the nut height part of a standard setup? My Gretsch Pro Jet is pinching the strings at the nut. Maybe because I play 10's?

so I might hold off on buying this because I don't know how to fix that nut - right? That's a shame. I hear other intonation reports on it but no one knew why - they just say it's a problem - now we do - do you think Sire heard you? will they fix it - are all of them like that? Why do guitar companies make good products and then screw up things that are so obvious?

Take your guitar to a luthier. Easy peasy if you’re uncomfortable with DIY. I I do that with all my guitars and basses, no matter who makes them👍

I bought one and I was So looking forward to enjoying it.
Unfortunately they sent me a dog.
Sharp fret ends coming out of the binding on both sides, cracked bindings, spray spots under the lacquer, badly cut nut.
I'm a Sire fan, I have one of their basses and an acoustic.
    So disappointed.
I'm waiting to hear what the seller company has to say ...

This guitar is good enough as an entry level, but of course this guitar is different from the Gibson 335.
If you buy this guitar expecting the sound of 335, you will be disappointed. You can understand it just by listening to Larry Carlton's performance video. His beautiful overtones are a bit lost.

Between Muscians Friends & Sire guitar, The customer service totally horrible. I would love to be enjoying my new guitar but, i have no idea where it is!! And yet they hold my money for it in the form a debit card hold and the bonus is every 10 days they hold twice the amount because a new hold goes on before the old one expires. Horrible!! Neither Sire or Musicians Friends keeps me informed as to what is happening. Both are Terrible, Terrible customer service companies.
