I'm one of those 60 year olds I started watching baseball on 1967 what's impressed me the most about Shohei Ohtani is his power and high batting average great hitting discipline at the plate if he gets back on the mound his stuff is unhittable and he's the best baseball stealer in the game he's the greatest player I've ever seen my
There's definitely nothing typical about Shohei Ohtani that's for sure. While watching him perform, one of the reoccurring sentences I kept hearing was "I've never seen anything like this" and this from sixty plus year olds.
I concur with your assessment of Ohtani. I've been watching MLB since the 70's and have seen many great players. Ohtani is the best I've ever seen play the game. His two way talent is unmatched.
He's the first to win 2 unanimous MVPs, now he is the first to win 3 unanimous MVPs. That means of all the MVPs he has won, no one voted otherwise. If Judge didn't break that HR record he would have 4 straight MVPs. He finished 2nd in 2022 and 4th in Cy Young.
People shouldn't be complaining about Ohtani "Just hitting" and becoming MVP... What about the pitchers who were MVPs? All they do is "Just pitch." And for that matter, only every four or five games, right?
Congratulations to Ohtani and Judge ! 👑👑 Please continue to show us exciting plays ! Thank you to Ben for always providing us with detailed information about MLB.😄
Ben, heard you on the Detroit Tigers Free Press podcast. Would really be a great way for Justin to end his career where he began it with the Tigers in Detroit.
It will be crazy if Shohei Ohtani wins a Cy Young in the future to go along with all of his offensive achievements as DH. I'll be honest, if the Dodgers are able to get another productive hitter to DH, I would have Ohtani focusing on pitching after next year. He has already got enough years being a two-way player at a historic level and has hit numbers that may never be reached. So, if I'm Ohtani, I'm shifting my energy and focus on pitching if the team is good enough to score runs without him. He is clearly the most talented player that has ever played in the majors and his legacy became a comet after this season. Gets a ring the very next season he leaves the Angels and gives the greatest season by a DH in history, and one of the best seasons ever offensively. And then topped it all off with a ring.
That's one of his main goals. Dudes a pitcher first, then hitter. When you read all the goals he wrote when he was a teenager, most of them are pitching goals.
with all due respect …I disagree …ohtani needs to continue hitting …the dude is a beast of a slugger …if I was a manager… I’d put ohtani in the bull-pen to close out critical games …he’s built for big moments…so we all get the best of both worlds while ohtani prolongs his pitching career
I am a Japanese MLB fan. It's a pity why there is no discussion about trying to team Judge and Shohei together in the United States. Stanton who can't run between teams with funds? ...It's a shortcut to make the Yankees stronger if you want players who dirty their uniforms!
Very well deserved MVP for Shohei Ohtani. He would have been a much greater factor in the World Series had he not gotten hurt in Game 2. His offensive numbers were so incredible as a full time DH that it is a shame going to back to pitching will likely diminish them somewhat. Interesting that at the same time as Ohtani winning the MVP, the second best MLB player to come out of Japan in my opinion Ichiro should most certainly become a first ballot Hall of Famer. A shame Ichiro never got to play in a WS. Insofar as Soto, we will find out whether it will be the most $$$ or whether there will be any other factor(s) in his decision of where to play. What I mean by that is with regard to Aaron Judge, he was a homegrown Yankee and the promise of being Yankee captain meant a lot to him. No such indication to this point that Soto values Yankee tradition above all else. In all probability, he will wind up with Mets as Ben said. We shall see.
His records this season speak for themselves: - Set the franchise record for most home runs in a single season with 54 home runs - Achieved a 9.2 Offensive bWAR, the highest in Dodgers' history, surpassing Mike Piazza’s 9.0 mark in 1997 - Holds the franchise record for most RBIs in a single game with 10 RBIs (in the game he went 6-for-6 with 3 home runs, 5 XBH and 2 stolen bases) - Most XBH by a LA Dodger (99) - Achieved an RBI in 10 consecutive games, surpassing Roy Campanella's record of 9 RBIs in 1955 - 411 total bases, setting a LA Dodgers record, surpassing Adrián Beltré’s 376 total bases in 2004 - Hit the most home runs in a single season at Dodgers' home games with 28 home runs - Achieved a 190 OPS+, the highest in a qualified season in Dodgers history, surpassing Mike Piazza’s 185 OPS+ in 1997 - Set a Dodgers record with 134 runs scored, leading the majors in this category - Posted a .646 slugging percentage, leading the NL and setting a new Dodgers record, surpassing Gary Sheffield’s .643 mark in 2000 - Led the Dodgers in all offensive categories in a single season And I only listed his Dodgers records, not MLB.
I think you may be right about Sasaki not signing with the Dodgers. Looking at Sasaki's bio, he lost his parents when he was young so breaking from his Japanese team early to go to MLB could be an opportunity for him to be successful. But the success is dependent on money he can earn while in MLB before he reaches age 25. He knows that he is a highly pursued by MLB teams so for him to make success it makes sense to pick an MLB team where he can make the most on endorsements. Of course player development and ability to be successful matters to him, but like you said Dodgers would limit his potential if money is one of his criteria.
I feel like the best way for teams to get sasaki especially if they are smaller market teams that aren’t gonna sign him w a big contract later on is both the good pitching development team and after two years, promising him that he will get traded to the team he wants to if he wants to get traded
So player development is the hill you want to die on with this Soto stuff? Luis Gil - 24' ROY Austin Wells - '24 ROY finalist Anthony Volpe - '23 8th in ROY, and Gold Glove Gleyber Torres - 2x All-Star, '18 ROY finalist Aaron Judge - 2x AL MVP, 6x All-Star, 4x Silver Slugger, '17 ROY How's that for player development?
Why doesn't MLB have an end-of-season awards ceremony like the NFL or NHL to present all of the season's honors and awards at a single site gathering? _
It's strange to me that when people who appreciate Shohei and what he's accomplished get told they're just glazing, but when anyone talks about Judge or any other great, it's not? Is it just insecure Yankee fans at this point? Or just haters in general? It's kind of sad. They're all great for baseball. All the runner ups are great for baseball too.
Who says Roki wont get any japanese endorsements if he goes to the Dodgers? Jim Bowden? Lmaoo. Ben, there is absolutely no rule stating that Japanese companies would only endorse one player from each team. I would go as far as saying its the opposite if he chooses LA. His brand would be massive in Japan since their games are televised nationally. And whatever shohei cant or wont take. Then Roki can possibly have as far as brand money.
Jim did a great job getting some attention with that one. He went against the grain, smart PR move on his part. But that guy knows what Roki is about to do as much as my neighbor who doesnt have the internet.
If you're talking about great athletes, what about Bo Jackson, the ONLY player to be an All-Star in two professional sports: Baseball and football? If it wasn't for that devastating hip injury, who knows what he could've accomplished.
Other baseball players should be outraged at how unfair the standard has become. Bunch of *Pussies*, I don't give a *F* if is Ohtani, it's been three in less than five years, Ohtani is one of a kind, like no matter how incredible anyone else plays, he goes way beyond of what a good baseball player can be. No one else has a chance at MVP anymore. When he pitch next year, he is going win MVP again, but then again they really don't give a shit about awards as long as they get those big salaries.
@Beck-Stein world series is just one series in the post season. If you mean only world series, then sure; Ohtani with a torn labrum was bad. But post season includes the wild card, division series, and champion series as well. Stop being a hater, you might enjoy life more.
@@Beck-Stein No, he had a double a few feet from going out in game 1. And again, the World Series is just one series. He had an amazing NLCS which is part of the post season. You can only say his World Series he didn't show up, not the post season.
When they said Ohtani should not win MVP, they woke the sleeping giant, poked the bear, grabbed the tiger by the tail, played with fire, opened Pandora's box, bit off more than they could chew, brought a knife to a gunfight, walked into the lion's den, shot themself in the foot, stole John Wick's car and killed his dog, stepped on Elvis's blue suede shoes, was made an offer they can’t refuse from Vito Corleone, got a knock on their door from 60 Minutes or heard a voice behind them say, “Hi, I’m Chris Hansen, from Crime Watch Daily”, lit the fuse, said hello to Tony Montana's little friend, drank the Kool-aid, unleashed the Kraken, drove off a cliff, wrote a check they could not cash, crossed the Rubicon, told Tommy Devito to go home and get his shinebox, leaped before looking, painted themself into a corner, tried to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, went down with the ship, called Marty McFly a chicken, opened a can of whoop-ass, rocked the boat, ran into an immovable object, got their just deserts, stepped on a crack, pissed off Bruce Banner, entered the echo chamber, did not stay in their lane and know their role, assassinated Archduke Ferdinand, buried their head in the sand, ate the forbidden fruit, told Fonzie he was wrong, jumped the shark, robbed Peter to pay Paul, had a plan but was punched in the mouth by Mike Tyson, triggered karma and Murphy’s Law upon themselves, falsely accused the Count of Monte Cristo of treason, captained the Exxon Valdez, touched a nerve, messed with the wife of a jealous man, jumped out of the frying pan into the fire, checked into the Hotel California, counted their chickens before they hatched, put their foot in their mouth, missed the boat, got caught with their pants down, ran into a brick wall, let the dogs out, bombed Pearl Harbor, broke a mirror, walked under a ladder, crossed paths with a black cat, smoked in bed, dug their own grave, barked up the wrong tree, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, did not look both ways before crossing the street, got involved with Amway, looked a gift horse in the mouth, checked into the roach motel, stirred up a hornet's nest, swallowed the poison pill, fell asleep on the beach on a sunny day, called the kettle black, was struck by lightning, bit the hand that feeds them, bent over to pick up a bar of soap in a men's prison shower, brought cannabis to Russia in luggage, screwed the pooch, made it completely FUGAZI and FUBAR, went on a fool’s errand, let the fox in the henhouse, built castles out of sand, ran with scissors, licked a frozen pole, put themselves in harm’s way, judged a book by its cover, was blinded by the light, put all their eggs in one basket, took the blue pill, effed around and found out, cried over spilt milk, got a taste of their own medicine, gave up their day job, went on a wild goose chase, lit a cigarette at a gas station, kicked against the goads, played in traffic, ran with the bulls, stepped on a rake, texted while drinking and driving, tempted fate, pissed in their own pool, threw caution to the wind, painted a bullseye on their back, slipped on a banana peel, dropped the ball, stirred the pot, crossed wires, slept with the fishes, danced with the devil, did not keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of their mouth, answered an email from a Nigerian prince, tripped over a land mine, became a fly in the ointment, a monkey in the wrench and a pain in the ass, went down in flames, fell from grace, took a long walk on a short pier, got their comeuppance, plowed another man’s field, threw good money after bad, faced the music, fell into quicksand, burned their bridges, went to a Diddy freak off party, farted in a crowded elevator, did not play with a full deck, forgot to delete their search history, sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind, accepted a Trojan Horse gift, went up the creek without a paddle, had their goose cooked, played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun, got hoisted on their own petard, doused fire with gasoline, cut off their nose to spite their face, fell on their sword, pooped their pants, crapped the bed, threw stones in a glass house, told Clint Eastwood they feel lucky, invested with Bernie Madoff or in Enron stock, sailed aboard the Titanic, tugged on Superman's cape, spit into the wind, pulled the mask off the old Lone Ranger and messed around with Jim.
