Illustrator Vector Rope Brush Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 бер 2019
- In this Adobe Illustrator tutorial, I'll discuss how to make a vector rope brush pattern for free. This technique can apply to custom brush patterns as well; there's no need to limit it to just a rope brush. You can use brushes like this to make a border or apply them to any custom shape you want.

Note for 4:17. If you move the copied piece over with one single move. Press Ctrl+D to duplicate the object on the same path. It'll make things in the future easier. :D
I cover that in another video...somewhere.
@@CaryHawkins Oh okok. This was my first video of yours I watched. I never had to make a rope pattern before lol. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much!
You are welcome!
Thank you!
Welcome!
Thanks - now I can do my Napoleonic naval battle scene justice!! The ships were fine, but the ropes on the ships were terrible!! Also, I can finally finish my cowboy rope-em scene. Lastly, I can finish illustrating that Norm joke about going to the rope store!
This is why I make these tutorials!
Thanks for the tutorial! Trying to design a logo for a boat and rope is a must have!
Do you have any tips for creating end caps or a way to “tie off” an end point?
If it were me, I'd just Google an image of a rope end and use that as a reference to create one using the good ol' pen tool.
Thank you
You're welcome!
Hey Cary.. Subscribed to your Channel, this was an awesome tutorial, so i tried to apply it to making bamboo not really getting the way I want it :/.. got a tutorial for that? It would really help me along..
It should work the same way. I don't have a video showing how to do that specifically, but it's a repeating pattern, so the same principles would apply.
Around 5 mins what happens with that bounding box? You just draw a rectangle and send it to the back? It doesn't work for me, the brush still comes out with gaps
Yes, and remove the fill and stroke on it. It needs to be colorless.
I had been so confused that how to make rope i try to use a squre block and overlay it again agian and it doesn't work then i found your video . Thank you so much!!!!!
You are welcome! I love to see these types of comments! Glad this helped.
Actually I do have a question period how can I keep the brush when I use another project? Have a new project I don't see the brush I originally just made based on what you did here. thanks
You can save your brush library and then open the same library with a new file. It's all under the sandwich icon in your Brushes window.
Hawkins, you're a Hero!!! Instant subcriber here!
Welcome to the channel!
The preview of my rope after I hit pattern brush is broken😢. I'm not sure what im doing wrong.
You mean when you create the pattern brush? Check to see if your angle and other settings like scale are set accordingly. My guess is the angle is off, but I can't say for sure without seeing an image.
Very nice
Thanks!
That is helpful
Good, glad it was. Anything you'd like to see me tackle on the channel?
love it
Thanks!
I am using CS but none of your align options work for me. What am I doing wrong? The align tool does nothing and moving the point doesn't "snap" to a 90° point, and nor does it remove the arc. I figured out a work around, but I am curious
I rewatched my video. If you follow my steps, it should work for you. Did you check the "align to:" in the bottom right of your align window? Did you use smart guides to get points to snap? I'm not sure what you mean by removing the arc, please clarify what you are asking there. Use a time stamp if you can.
Nice video, great help. Can you make more videos with making different patterns in AI?
I will keep that suggestion in mind - might even do that for my next tutorial. Are you thinking brush patterns alone or something more?
youre the best!
Thanks!
Thank you so much. So how did the rectangle in the background eliminate the gap in the pattern?
Sometimes the "gap" is just a visual effect and isn't really there. This often shows up in pdf files. If you put a layer of color behind it, that can sometimes alleviate the issue.
@@CaryHawkins Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question and for the fantastic tutorial. It really helped me. 🥰 Sending you gratitude and best wishes.
Glad it was useful for you! Thanks for the feedback.
Found you on Facebook. Thanks for the video. Can you save pre-sets in illustrator?
After you make the brush, click on the hamburger icon in the top right of the brushes menu. Select "Save Brush Library".
Hey! When I apply the rope brush on a circle for example, there are 2 'rope sections' that overlap each other not evenly. Do you have an idea why?
Spacing settings might be your issue. Check your brush settings.
thanks!
You bet!
So this is super helpful but I'm still getting that gap in between mine. I checked all my settings and everything seems to be the same as yours. Any idea what I'm missing?
You might open up your brush and adjust your clipping mask, if you used one. Or you can try not using a clipping mask and use pathfinder options to cut the brush shape to the exact size you need.
@@CaryHawkins Do the pathfinder option doesn't work the way yours did. I triple checked my settings and nothing works the way yours did. I tried following some other tutorials but I had the same thing happen every time even though they had a different process than you did. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. It all seems fairly simple but something must be off in my settings. Any idea what it could be?
@@CaryHawkins I can get a brush into my library but it only works in segments. It doesn't connect.
Open the brush up and see if anything is in there causing separation. My guess is you have something like a clipping mask or object without stroke or fill.
It didn't work, I put the rectangle on the back and dragged and the brush was not correct.
:/
Try again! It should work.
I still have gaps in my brush😭
Open up the brush itself and see if there is anything creating a bounding box or if there are any other objects that got in by mistake.
2:45 FFFF bro just make a rectangle and round the alternative corners
foda
Favorite occupational demonstration of ability???
this was very helpful thanks :)
