This is astonishing interesting to listen to. As a retired Navy officer who started his career at seas with the CLF while watching it to be disposed of, I say that this video is extremely wise. The USA needs to revitalize the inland waterway system tremendously and we need to build out the maritime logistics capability to be able once again move large scale resources reliably through strongly contested maritime domains.

Your previous YT discussions on world-wide maritime operations in the Red Sea and impact of the Houthi operations in/around Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea have been well done and extremely detailed for novices and others who are interested in Maritime Operations.
You may be surprised that a grandma is interested in this! I enlisted into the United States Navy at age 17. I served aboard the USS ARD-5, a ship located on the Groton New London Submarine Base in Connecticut back in late 70's early 80's. Women were just being allowed to serve aboard Navy vessels. My ship drydocked nuclear powered submarines for repair and maintenance,( scraping off barnacles and painting). It was exciting as a young woman meeting people from everywhere. There were only a handful of us WIN's, woman in the Navy on board. We had to prove ourselves to the guys, pull our own weight, do the job, and have good comebacks for a lot of crap we got. I've always loved the water, grew up next to a river, was on swim team, loved visiting lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. Ships are amazing. I love to learn about our military, ports, the operation of it all. What you talked about in this video is very important to our country. Every branch plays a crucial role in our economy, commerce, our workforce, our defence, our families, communities, states, and our nation. It would be great for Sean Duffy to see this video once he's appointed. Special interest groups with the most cash seem to be put ahead of what's really important, the big picture of truly America being a great nation. I don't think the delay on oil ports was ineptitude; I think it was deliberate, and attempt to hold the line on carbon emissions. That will now go by the wayside, and we risk being despised by our grandchildren as they retreat from our coasts and build bunkers to survive megastorms, while tending gro-lights to keep what few crops we can still grow alive. It seems unlikely that this administration will do much about modernizing the Jones Act, or revitalizing American-flagged vessels. Increasing the requirements for American-flagged vessels, by the way, might be a preferable alternative to tariffs, as the increases would accrue directly to the labor force instead of being diluted through the tariff tax structure. Your comments on the Merchant Marine Academies are right on point. Federal support for a US Maritime Service would be outstanding, as are the thoughts about putting the Coast Guard back where it belongs. One wonders what we might do if we let the tech wizards loose on the improvement of maritime equipment and technology. Please don't forget Pete Buttigieg's work in rail, both passenger and freight.

A little more on the side of transportation but still touching a side of shipping. I’m excited about the BIG project. Out of the LA- Long Beach Ports. The project seems to have so many pluses. Biggest is to me is that it’s basically expanding the land area of the port. Although it’s a few miles away. Second advantage for normal everyday people is maybe getting some trucks off the city highway where they are more likely to get into accidents and cause traffic to the masses. Then people may also move there warehouses out to the Barstow area. Where land is a little less expensive. This could free up some land in the DTLA area. Im Guessing this will also get containers moved across the country faster. The project doesn’t seem to get much coverage. I hope it’s still happening. It seem to have so many advantages. I only covered a few. Probably should have been done 10 years ago. Although I do realize there have been baby steps/other projects done to made this becoming a reality. It’s exciting! I figured this would be a good time to bring this topic up while we’re talking about transition as a whole. 👍🏼
Doesn’t the service obligation of the USMMA already require 8 years of service afloat or in approved shore posts if seagoing roles are not available? And joining the USNR MMR? What about that is different what you are recommending?

Good Day, everyone. 💪🇺🇲👍
Great episode, Sal! Hope this guy is as good as he seems. But, to be fair, how much of previous Secretary Buttigieg's term was focused first on covid and getting product in and then, when it was controlled, how much time was taken on people buying everything available.
