Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Dragon Age. In the waning years of the Blessed Age, reptilian wings blanketed the sun. Dragons, thought to have been hunted to extinction centuries earlier, reappeared in the skies above the world of men and devastated the countryside of Orlais and Nevarra. Reading this as an epochal omen, Faustine II, Divine of the Chantry, declared a new age: the Dragon Age, which in her holy wisdom, she predicted would be a time of violence, upheaval, and dramatic change. Thus begins the period in which the titularly named Dragon Age games take place, yet this is not where the history of its world begins. Welcome to our first video on the vibrant and tumultuous continent of Thedas, where we will explore the immortal hubris of ancient Elvhenan, and the rise of the Blood Mages of Tevinter.

I have been looking forward to this series since the day you created this channel.
THE PROMISED DAY HAS COME!
As great as this video was. I really wish you had taken the time to continue your Star Wars series. Or some other Sci-Fi series. Please make your next video on something Sci-Fi please.
I recommend for future lore videos; Star Trek: The Dominion War and Battletech for sci-fi genre.
Naruto for an anime/manga source.
Malazan empire please!
Fun fact: Thedas is an acronym of 'THE Dragon Age Setting' that the team was using internally and eventually started liking and using as a serious name for the setting.
Very cool. I did not know that.
Neat fact
I think in-universe, "Thedas" originally referred to any lands not under Tevinter control? Then after the Imperium was defeated by Andraste, it came to refer to the entire continent.
@@tylerboyce4081 ya that's how i always thought of it, but technically the name Thedas wasn't an official name until Andraste started fighting back against the imperium. the chantry as we know it wasn't founded until after the long war with Tevinter, as it was she who established it, but the name wasn't her idea. she originally wanted to form an Inquistion as a way to bring peace to the elves after freeing them and other humans who were also held as slaves, which is why the Inquisitor was viewed a certain way. it's kind of understandable, because Andraste was a leader type as well. but sometime after her death, the people couldn't figure out what name to call themselves. what Andraste meant by magic exist to serve man, not rule over him, she never meant for mages to be taken away from there homes. what she meant was, don't use certain magic that can control people, but because of the bad practice of blood magic which even Andraste condemned, the people just developed a fear overtime because of what happened, and i feel that's what led to the chantry name. once Andraste was gone, they had nobody with that type of leadership to guide them. eventually the whole magic exist to serve man took on a life of it's own. but that's what happens with people, the Maker wasn't even a concept to Andraste because even she knew about the old gods. the Maker was something the chantry eventually came up with, because none of those people knew anything about the old gods. so to them Andraste had to be blessed by somebody, but i think we know by now who the Maker really is, and it's not who the chantry think is.
somehow this is very offputting, like a framework in a programming language rather than some cool name e.g. Forgotten Realms
The Dragon Age series is a bit of a hidden gem
they put out a series on netflixs
@@MusMasiAnd it’s rather disappointing.
waiting for the next game and fuck solace
@@VLarraechea I watched the first episode of the DA anime. It feels like a poor man's "Legend of Vox Machina". The animation quality is superb, but the character development feels forced, instead of happening organically.
It's also a bit cringe and off-putting that the writers made four out of the seven or so main characters gay. I have nothing against LGBTQ, but did it really need to focus so prominently with the majority of the characters, in the first episode?
Yeah, and a bit of a mixed bag.
It's a remarkable achievement, from a remarkable company to create such a rich, detailed, and fascinating world as a setting for a video game. Boy do I miss peak bioware.
Bioware Golden Age was amazing! Being a teenager during that time and playing games like Kotor, Mass Effect 1&2, and Dragon Age was amazing!
@@NRV0 Truly an age of wonder, but then Bioware turned to blood magic, and tried to piece the veil, and unleashed the Darkspawn upon the world...
Who or what is darkspawn in this analogy?
@@antiochus87 EA?
@@NRV0 Hahaha yes

Finally Dragon Age got some love.
As a dragon age fan who priced together a lot of the lore from codex entries and dialogue from characters like Morgan and Solas, this was a great summary of the history of the world. It’s absolutely bonkers how much the lore in this series rivals that of other high fantasy IPs, but it doesn’t get the love it deserves due to…EA being EA.
It doesn't get the love it "deserves" because all of this lore was used as filler for the codex. None of it really reared its head in any meaningful way within the game. It's like nobody knows how to write fiction anymore.
@smoqueed44 This can not be understated.
Finally! Lore videos on Dragon Age.
Thank you very much, guys, was hoping you’d leap into it soon.
Again? When was their first I’d like to watch it
@@ryderstorm9469My mistake, for some reason I thought they had. Maybe it was one of the other creators around, recently too.
@@VLarraechea Gil dirthalen(probably misspelled) has a good channel for dragon age content if your looking.
In a way, the Elvhen empire was a bit like the Rakatan Infinite Empire. One built their civilization upon magic, while the other relied on the Dark Side. Both were really into infighting, slavery, and fell when they lost their mojo, which made most of their stuff unusable or inaccessible.
@@goldenfiberwheat238 yep, so lazy; it's not like there are also several differences between the elves and the Rakata, and No one else reused ideas before.

Dragon Age lore is honestly some of the best in fantasy for me.
I'm using them heavily as inspiration for my own story.
Elves being done in by their own arrogance, and not just once. First time because of sheer inebriation with power coupled with hubris, and second time by pointlessly and foolishly challenging the Tevinter Imperium to war.
Dragon Age, The magisters, the blight, the darkspawn, the archdemons. All amazing concepts. Thats the "hook" of dragonage for me.
I hope they make a dragon age game with our boy Kieran as lead protagonist. Kieran literally has urthemiel in his, which means he's got a connection to the fade.
The Warden for the win. OG all the way
@@goldenfiberwheat238 What do you MEAN?! Bioware has literally announced Dragon Age Dreadwolf (DA4) is in alpha
@@goldenfiberwheat238 The way things went with Anthem I think EA realized Bioware has really only shown true mastery at 1 thing, RPGs. And so they've basically been tasked with putting all their resources into DA and Mass Effect. If there is any place to have hope its in dragon age
"You would risk everything you have in the hope that the future is better? What if it isn't? What if you wake up to find that the future you shaped is worse than what once was?”
"The light. We sought the golden light. You offered... the power of the gods themselves. But it was... black... corrupt. Darkness... ever since. How long?"
Waiting for DAD is tough. I can't wait to explore Tevinter.
Is it just me or what happened in Dragon Age really reminded me of how the Old Eldian Empire fell in Attack on Titan and Marley rose to power and become just as bad as their predecessor?
With that mind, does Tevintar Imperial deserved to be trampled into nothing but ruins by something like the Rumbling?
Love dragon age!!!!! This will be dope!!
This is EXACTLY what I needed. Elite content form an elite youtuber about an elite game.
OH yeah! Dragon Age Absolution AND a documentary about Dragon Age lore. You made my weekend wizards and warrios! Thank you!
Small question: are we sure that Fen'Harel's rebellion started before Mythal was killed? I thought Fen'Harel's rebellion was in reaction to the Evanuris killing Mythal.
If I remember correctly, Solas rebelled before the Evanuris killed Mythal. Mythal's death was the last straw however, since it was a reason for Solas to decide the Evanuris were beyond reasoning and redemption.
Iirc Solas began as a rebel in the "social subversive" sense who sought to undermine the Evanuris's enslavement of the people. Mythal's murder was what moved him to full-blown rebellion and sealing the Evanuris within the Fade.
Fen'Harel started the rebellion before mythal died. He created the veil because they killed Mythal.
Like the others mentioned above. Solas in the lore was already a Rebel "God" or God of mischief.
I’m excited for you to tackle the Blights, and the Rise of Orlais and Ferelden in the future.
I've been playing through the series for the first time over the past few months and getting closer to being done with Inquisition so this is very welcome.
Finally the DA universe narrated by kings and generals. Thank you very much nd keep them coming
Beautiful. It gives a comprehensive view of the world and history of Dragon Age, which could not be found so easily in the games.
More dragon age please! Their books provide tons of lore
Cant wait for the next installment, Dragon Age is one of the best franchises out there. Should totally do a mass effect series at some point to.
This video is criminally underviwed. I finally understood the lore of Tevinter after watching this.
Товарищи, мы дожили до дней, когда можно записывать видео по лору Dragon Age!
Спасибо за работу, автор
Its always the mages. Elven mages enslaving their own people and making them fight each other, then tevinter mages enslaving everyone for use in blood sacrifices and going off to create the Blights. There isnt an evil in Thedas that doesnt have a mage as its root, and this video shows it fantastically. Great work 🤍
Hmm that is actually very true, I didn't really look at the magic users in DA that way, Thanks.
I guess that magic gives it users more power and in so, more ways to inforced their will upon others and commit such evil doings.
Magic on its own is not evil but ever since First and Second Sin we have magic users who turned their back to the maker and started worshiping other things, similar theory can be seen in almost all religions.
And in the end we have Tevinter Empire mage-rulers who became same as there Elf counterparts years ago, history is a cycle.
@@aleksa6548 Even for the average peasant in Thedas that may not be aware of all that history, the contempt and mistrust for mages is understandable. Accidentally make someone mad, and they may try to stab you. But if that person happens to be a mage they could burn down your whole village, or Maker knows what else
YAS!!!!! IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THE DRAGON AGE VIDEOS!!!!!!! This is by far my favorite fantasy game series and the lore is sooooo damn deep!
As a massive fan of the Dragon Age franchise, I was hoping for a video on the lore of Thedas. Once again, you and yours didn't disappoint. I love the videos across both channels and hopefully you can keep producing these videos where your hard work and diligence shines through.
Thank you so much guys for doing this series, Thedas is such a treasure!
I'm so happy you're covering this series!!! It's in my top 5 Fantasy list with Lord of the Rings and World of Warcraft. The games are amazing, and the lore is rich and deep when it comes to Elves, Qunari, Tevinter, and Demons and Gods. Looking forward to future vids!
Ever since I watched your impeccable Elder Scrolls timeline video, I was hoping Thedas would be picked up next. Thank you for making my day!
As a long time fan and major lore nerd for the Dragon Age series, this video was great. You covered all the most important details without going into spoilers for the series. I'm very excited to see the next video!
So happy you are covering Da, please do the human covenant war from halo!!
This is one of the best comprehensive lore videos for Dragon Age I've ever seen, and I've been watching lore videos for years. This would be a great video to show people who have questions about the overall history of Thedas.
The Dragon Age lore is PEAK cannot wait for what they have in store for the 4th installment
Finally some recognition for Dragon Age here! I must say your maps and animations are absolutely beautiful. Looking forward for new videos!
I swear the Tevinter Imperium looks a lot like Aversaria from Godherja, great CK3 Mod by the way.
What a treat! Thank you for these videos! I'm going to watch them all. 😊 Subscribed!
THIS WAS SUPER MAGNIFICENT!
Great video, waiting for the next parts 🙂
"June" is pronounced like "Ju-nay".
You also used a lot of unconfirmed or speculative fan theories. For example, there are several hints as to where the City of Arlathan was, not just the one where it was in the Arlathan forest. Another would be that it was where now Lake Calenhad is. The Elvhen empire was certainly not limited to the Arlathan forest. There are Elven ruins as far south as the Arbor Wilds and there's the ruin of a Temple of Dirthamen in Orlais east of Val Royeaux.
Don't forget the second homeland that was establish by the Dalish Elves near Orlais. They were rewarded it for helping Andraste bring down Tevinter, but lost it in the first Exalted March (basically a crusade) declared by the Chantry.
I was gonna say, I don't remember being this much lore that far back being in the games. I know there are a lot of codex's, but I don't think there's this much specificy. Or at least if there was, I would be shocked.
@@ianmacfarlane7596 Yeah a lot of lore stuff gets explain in the codexs, from people who lived during the ancient era's, and books.
@@ianmacfarlane7596 Most of whats mentioned in this video about elven society before the fall of their empire is from the Inquisition dlc. Not from a codex, its in some murals in the walls I believe, and some passing comments and conversations with characters. A good chunk of it is easy to miss
@@ianmacfarlane7596 There's a lot of information in the two "World of Thedas" books. That's where this particular account of the Tevinter conquest of Arlathan comes from, for example.
Dragon Age has such a rich and interesting lore. I'm glad you're doing a series on it
Can't wait to see more Dragon Age content!
I had no idea this series had such rich lore
First game killed it on lore was up there with elder scrolls then it just slowly got worse. It is the only reason i played Inquisition.
@@Graus4201 Origins came out when Bioware was at the height of their Golden Age and their ability to craft a Dark Fantasy story was supreme. It might have been when EA brought them or when the suits(As Mark Darrah puts it) in charge had no idea what the game was about decided to try and change things but the series has gotten lesser and lesser since Origins. I'm watching DA Absolution on Netflixs now and I have to say I'm disappointed. I still love the series but I can't but feel like it has lost its way. I really hope DAD is a return to form, but with so many of Bioware OG's that made Kotor, Mass Effect, and DA gone I can't help but feel worried.
EDIT: Sorry rereading all that and I realized I ended on a negative note. Regardless on how I feel for the direction of the series so far its lore and mysteries are amazing! I can't wait to learn more about the hidden stuff.
Love the lore videos for Dragon Age! Great work!
I am totally loving this. I am a huge Dragon Age fan and I love your channel. It's not bad for dipping your toes into. This video is a good start. Keep it up!
You guys should really cover the Safehold series by David Weber, this channel is perfect for it and there's currently 10 books, it's about an interstellar age of earth that gets wiped out by aliens but survivors make a home on a new planet forsaking almost all technology. The story picks up when an android wakes in a cave to find it's in the age of sail equivalent to the late middle ages and has the goal of bringing humanity back to the space age. I don't want top spoil to much but this would be great to see on this channel.
Too bad it's 3 books stretched over 10, jam packed with digression after sideplot after infodump.
@@westrim I’m not sure how you go from late medieval to steam age in three books, unless you cut out the war, intrigue and religious themes. But then that guts the series.
@@westrim Seeing each book is about 400 pages, cutting 10 into 3 would result in such a large book/s that would be so weighty,it would serve dual service as a club. Not something sought after by most book owners.

Awesome video! Love the animations and narrative! Can’t wait to see more ❤️
Amazing video of a great franchise. Very cool to hear the background behind the Dragon Age games. Keep up the great work! =)
The elves of Thedas were actually spirits made flesh and blood hence why they were so powerful and adept at magic and why they were so crippled when the Fade was separated from the physical world. The Dwarves were born from the Titans who were exactly that and made of living rock, Lyrium is their blood. Also part of the reason Dwarves fear falling into the sky is because of way before the Darkspawn, before they lost knowledge of the Titans, possibly because the Elven gods were hunting them, the chasms the Titans dwelt in were so deep what you could see into the bottom looked like the sky.
This is also why Fen'Harel wants to tear the fade back down, despite the apocalyptic levels of death and destruction it would cause, because he took a nice looooooong nap after veiling up and woke up to Humanity killing each other all over what was once Elvhenan with the Elves all living meak lived in the slums as second class citizens or worse slaves, or as hermits still marking themselves as slaves to the Gods he locked away for treating them no better than Tevinter none of them retaining any memory or knowledge of their civilization, only small fragments of elvish language and writing. And thats mostly only held by Keepers, magical leaders and the focal point of their clan...
Nice. As a fan of the setting, I very much appreciate the attention it is getting 🙂
Oooh, I am excited for this series. I'm a big Dragon Age fan, so I'll be keeping track of this one. I know a lot about Dragon Age lore, so I can follow along and understand the details.
Hope to see moore dragon age lore. Really liked it.
I have been waiting to see this one. Thanks for listening to us in the comment section. Great work as always wizards and warriors.
I am so happy to see you make videos on Dragon Age. Those games have the best lore I ever saw (a personal opinion) and there is so much to cover. The only thing I would like to say is that Arlathann was not the only city to survive the apparition of the Veil.
Basically the cities were linked not by roads but by portals that became mostly useless because of the Veil. The cities came separated and disapeared one after the other and Arlathann is apparently the last. However it is also proved that Temples and some particular locations, linked to the elvhen gods survived even until the events of dragon age III (the Mythal Temple for exemple). The thing is that, as an ongoing serie, the lore is quite open. It is never stated how many elvhen cities and temples survived after the Veil apparition.
The elvhen of the Mythal Temple were still immortals, because of "spoilers" and could fend off intruders for milleniums after the Veil. Cities could have also survived in hidden and forgotten areas for the elvhen was not linked physically. This communication issue also explain why the Arlathann elves left and hide themselves in the forest when humans arrived for they realised they were completely alone and had real issues coming back to their senses and adapt to their new reality. So we really don't know the situation of old elvhen in Thedas.
Still when Arlathann fall many elvhen survived too and we also don't know what happened to them. The History of Elves is stil full of holes that will most likely have answers in the next game "Dreadwolf" that seems to focus on Tevinter AND Elvhen (that are obviously there to avenge themselves). Yes Tevinter is not ready for what is coming (play Trespasser to fully understand how BIG the elvhen resurgence is)
Oh my gosh how is this so good!

Great video. The background art makes it feel official.
New subscriber and really hope you continue these videos! Dragon Age is your favorite game series and it's been hard to learn the lore on my own but your video is so well done that it made it very easy to not only understand but remember!
I have played every dragon age game, read every dragon age novel, watched every movie and show. Man, this lore dump blows those away for my understanding of the timeline. Still, the downside of a lore dump like this is it removes the mystery from the games. Would it make sense to put a spoiler warning? Like, a huge reveal in DAI is that Fen Harel made the veil. I would absolutely love to see more dragon age lore related to the dwarves and all of the thaigs lost in the deeproads
So you clicked a lore video and expected there not to be potential spoilers?

Love what I'm seeing!!!! Dragon Age is my Jam!!!
The history of Dragon Age begins with what is basically the Fall of Troy, with Elvhenan being Troy and Tevinter being the Roman and Byzantine analog as they at present control only a fraction of the territory they once held at their peak.
Yeah, Tvinter might as well be a one to one copy of the Roman Empire (27 BCE - 1453 CE).

I wonder what are you going to do when narrating the events of the games. You could make it obscure, like your Elder Scrolls video, or choose certain decisions as more canon appropiate, like the games part of the Witcher. But some of the decisions in Dragon Age in general are so world altering, deciding if a king gets to rule or not, deciding if a faction gets genocided or not, that it's difficult to overlook them without great mention.
more obscure is better. i dont want them following that stupid bioware canon
There is cannon that Bioware has for internal purposes.
They can either follow Bioware canon, or their own. Or just abound on the lore and not jump into the games’ story.
I can only guess they'll either cover some events very generally or pick a consensus choice like Bhelen becomes king of the dwarves and go with that.
