Thank you for this video. I’m interested to learn all I can about caring for my horses hooves! No hoof, no horse! So as a new horse owner, I need to understand these things… I’m just a bit intimidated…. Want to get it right for the horse’s sake and not cause more problems.
Hi. Great informative video. I have a question.. how do you trim to encourage heel growth? I’m want to know as I’m doing my own horses feet, trying to learn as much as possible, he has quite low heels..
I've done a whole course on that concept here: myhorsecoach.com/courses/horse-hoof-trimming-101/ It's impossible to write out the silver bullet in a comment on UA-cam. No matter what though, you have to address the whole hoof as there isn't any "encouraging" of a particular part of the hoof, it all grows at the same time, so you have to get the horse to where they wear down the right parts and not the wrong parts.
Very informative and thanks for sharing this information. It really helps me understand a lot. Sorry I haven’t been around but my husband passed away on the 5th. Spending a lot of time with family, friends and all my animals.
oohhhhhh, Teresa, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you're ok, obviously it's completely understandable to not bother hanging around here! Absolutely time with family is where it's at. Keep in mind you have this series of videos available to you over on Patreon (lots going on there whenever you're bored). I truly feel for what you're going through and I'm so sorry you are. Lots of care sent your way
Teresa, I am very sorry for you, these are sad news. Do whatever you feel is best for you : being surrounded by family and friends is so precious and the affection of your animals will help you cope with the loss as well, I hope. Alexandra
Stable Horse Training thanks so much. I’m busy dealing with everything here in the day time but watching your channel at night to unwind. I missed a few videos when my husband was in the hospital. He had gotten cancer 18 years ago but it came back and took him. I’m just thankful for those 18 years because he got to see his son grow up.
Thank you Graeme for this informative video, which complement what you showed on Patreon. I'm very much interested in this subject for my own education, since I can't use your knowledge in practice. 👍
Kids, I was wondering trimming Tennessee Walker. Aren't they much more on their toes after trim then oppose to a regular gaited horse? My Mare is a Quarter Horse and she's looks so flat footed compared the my gaited Gelding. Like he almost looks like club foot. But I do have his heels down as much as I can. Is that normal for walkers. Both of my Horses are also dragging their toes more then usual so I can't trim their toes any shorter. Just the sides get rounded off shorter an a little on the palm I do shave. Sky's feet don't look like club foot at all. You did a really nice job on his feet! Thanks Connie
Thanks Connie :) I appreciate that. Breed is irrelevant, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Trim to what the foot tells you to trim. If the toes are coming off too fast, likely the heels are too high (if it's just a foot thing) but I wouldn't dare give any advice without seeing detailed pictures first.
Yes, he was too high in the heels. So I trimmed only the heels down as far as I could without getting near the ball of his foot. Like you were saying. I do understand YOU would have to see it. Thanks Connie
Hoof trimming is not my favorite. I do watch the vids. I know you take it very seriously and good for you. You are very proficient at it. Know the horses appreciate it Keep on trimmin.
Thank you for watching Alice :) I understand, it can be dry material sometimes. I do take it very seriously as I've got some horses back to being sound for the knowledge in my head. That means a lot to me!

Just keep learning and take your time as needed. Over time it will come more easy
Thank you for this video!
You are so welcome!
