3:20 Linus have your sponsor team reach out to BoltsandNuts. They decked out a whole bunch of car youtubers with what amounts to walls of all the hardware they could ever need.
Just to let you know this got served up in my feed, maybe because Linus commented, but either way I hope your video and channel gets a surge of new viewers. I always enjoy third party video collabs with LTT and other tech UA-camrs.
tynan is such a fun dude to hang out with especially after watching his intel extreme tech upgrade where he make a forge that can cook your body while throwing it across the room
We wanted to make it happen unfortunately we couldn’t make it big enough easily. 3x doesn’t quite work if it was 4x we could fit screwdrivers inside the screwdriver 😂
I'm surprised that LTT does so much product development in-house. I had thought that they were working with external companies that specialize in prototyping.
Generally speaking iterating using in house 3D printing is wwaayy faster than working with an external prototyping house, since we can iterate like 20+ times/day depending on the size of the part with printers whereas at an external house it would be days to weeks per cycle. It also helps us understand manufacturing processes and improves our design processes! Plus lets us do fun one off projects with the tools!
They do a lot of stuff in-house in general tbh, as Linus and some of the others have talked about a few times. That's why they can have such a large number of staff, but inidividual projects and tasks can still seem slow or flawed in some ways, bc there's only a small number involved. It can lead to inefficiencies in some places but allows them some pretty significant freedom and other benefits elsewhere. Like Tynan pointed out, so many of their resources are pulled frequently in various directions for labs testing, videos, products, and sometimes Linus's personal use lmao
Generally speaking, product iteration and development is faster on 3D printers and lmg has an advantage in that a lot of their staff are very familiar with 3D printers so that they are capable of reviewing them and giving good reviews rather than meaningless ones. And when you have a significant percentage of your company That understands 3D printers at a far more in-depth level than even the average manufacturing company, they become quite useful
I suspect because they are a media company they get nice discounts on a lot of the stuff they purchase if it doesn't get sent to them (probably not on the 20th Prusa Mark 4 but maybe the first five) Which would be part of the reason they were able to afford all this equipment, 25% discounts aren't usually a dramatic impact on whether you can purchase something, but when you're talking about individual machines that can cost into hundreds of thousands of rollers, a 25% discount makes a huge impact
@@the_undeadLinus has talked about this on the wan show a bit, and unless they can work out some sort of agreement for a sponsored video or something, it doesn’t work like that. Because really the value proposition isn’t there. A lot of these larger machines are going to be B2B transactions and so a 25% discount or any discount to LMG doesn’t really move the needle or make a lot of sense for those in the long run
@@RobertJBareIII I promise you with a lot of the sponsored videos they've done on a lot of their machines are not paying for the entire machine, Linus is still spending a lot of money on any equipment they acquire even if it's in a sponsored video, I suspect sponsored videos cover 25 to 50% of the cost because these companies will be fools to give Linus entire machines for free
@@the_undead I never said they got the machine for free lol, I was just saying they do not get discounts much at all. At least not to the degree you suggested in your initial comment
I likes the ' there's a lot of subtractive stuff here' 'certainly is, and we're adding more'. Those giant drivers are hilarious when realise they sound almost the same for the ratchet and bit storage. Would have loved to have seen their metal printer included in video, but I think that's still sort of under an embargo.
Because metal printers are at least outside of universities practically brand new technology, I suspect they have to get permission every time they want to include it in a video Beyond saying we used a metal 3D printer
@@the_undead Yeah, previous LTT videos had half of it blurred out. I think they still have that printer, but Linus wasn't around on the day so I guess Tynan played it safe. Would guess that CC did ask about it.
@@benwu7980 That is another fact or I didn't even think about, Titan is not senior enough to make decisions that could potentially get the entire company in a whole lot of trouble. Linus is the majority shareholder so he'll take relatively large risks because he wants to and you can't really get rid of Linus from lmg from a corporate structure perspective because as far as I can tell they don't have procedures for ousting shareholders
@@the_undead Don't think Linus would be taking risks when showing it, since he'd know what the deal is with the maker, and he'd have script and video review. Tynan knew enough to know it shouldn't be included in the tour (at least on camera, I still bet that CC asked about it). The shareholder thing is kind of a funny dynamic, since he owns 51% and Yvonne the other 49%, so the CEO could fire him or her, but would likely be his last action as CEO. There's some possible scenarios where it could happen that I've seen in other companies, like malfeasance, but would say that it so unlikely as to be zero chance.
@@benwu7980 When I say show and I mean mention it even exists in this video. He could probably get away with that but from what I remember on the video where they talked about the device it was in one of the labs tours. They mentioned they're not allowed to show the insides of basically at all of either the printer or the i'm going to call it a furnace
It’s flexpipe you can get the piping covered in plastic for making tables and whatnot we bought a bunch of it and used it to deck out the engineering den!
Most of the resin systems we use have built in filters, and they are located far from other workspaces. For our FDMs we mostly use PLA/PETG which doesn't offgas much and our main print areas are large open areas or in non-office spaces
They may as well just list the massive screwdrivers for the actual cost it took to make everything and design and materials for one of their whales to pick it up. I'd love to have one in my loungeroom
In its current form it is a Video measurement system, I would say its closer to a CMM than an optical comparator though its likely a terminology difference. Optical comparators are generally described to "only" handle 2D measurements this is a 3D system that has the capability of having an additional touch probe.
@@tynanstack8251 we have a Keyence machine that has a light probe but it doesn’t do z depths, that option only had a .005” accuracy so we didn’t get that. Does that machine probe in z? If so that’s a great machine!
There's some cool tech in their lab that seems to have been missed out, maybe just wasn't your kind of area or there just wasn't a huge amount of time etc. Either way, really cool video
Since time was limited I mostly focused on the additive/manufacturing setup they have in house. If you want to see a full tour of everything they've done that on their channel already in the past
If it’s anything like the back packs or the screwdriver then way more than a year out based on the stage of development/design it’s in. Considering it looked like they were still figuring out the shell and were no where near a working prototype (at least from what we can see)
@@RobertJBareIII true but hopefully now that they have experience with manufacturing it should go more smoothly although this is their first product with a pcb so i hope they finish it before my new one dies lol

Hey, I'm here thanks to WAN show! Great video!
Great video, this is something I was hoping LTT would put out at some point but having you do a video on their set up is just as good.
Thank you Nero for this vid. Always nice to get an inside look. I'm surprised with how much they have.
more stuff soon :)
That's much more substantial than I would have ever guessed!
i wanna see tynan hes an untapped gold mine of content his body language is very fun im a fan
If Linus has approved to purchase all this. Then i wonder what he said no too 😂
What an awesome video and behind the scenes tour 😊
I was hoping for this for ages, that was awesome
Nice to see some tooling they use, behind the scenes 🙂
This was a well put together video. Good job. And, interesting stuff they do while being well rounded in their goals.
This got recommend to me, it's awesome LMG let you do this!
Glad you enjoy it!

It’s used for video production as well :-). Though these days the Eng team are the biggest users of the shop on average

Suggestion to LMG, mandatory safety glasses when in the machine shop premises? It's been standard practice in the US for ages.
