Looks like the exhibition nailed the theme of Camp so much better than most of the celebrities at the gala. Lots of feathers and sequins don't automatically equal Camp in my book.
This video explains that camp is so much more than I previously thought! Also being unable to visit the exhibit in person I am grateful to have such a well narrated video showcasing the exhibit.
Camp is my favorite form of fashion. There's no rules. Just pure fun and artistry. I wish I had the privilege of enjoying this amazing sight of this exhibition. One day, In Sha Allah, I will be able to appreciate the exhibits in person. One day.
do the designers even do any sort of research into the historical and social contexts of the themes anymore? Like half of the met gala attendants doesn't seem to fit the bill
I am in awe with these grand masters of fashion. It’s beautiful how they have paved the way for those who think out of our normal fashion techniques. Camp is and forever will be a love of mine.
This job was created for Andrew Bolton. You can sense his passion for what he does. I'm always impressed with the research and thought put into the exhibitions every year. Well done!
I have used the word “ Camp” in my vocabulary for years but never knew it’s association with the fashion world or its history. Thanks for this very informative and enlightening video essay.
I want to see a more funeral-esc look for the next Met Gala, i wanna see Goth, Dark, Dreary, pale makeup up Drab but in a very OVER THE TOP way next year....omg i would love it
They did an exhibit on Punk's influence on fashion, and some of the dresses exhibited on last year's exhibit (Heavenly Bodies), did have some gothic dresses that happens to have Catholic imagery
I Want to see Southamerica re-imagine. We watch (a lot) about what the world is talking about but they never talks about us: Brazil is no the longest party, Colombia is no longer the Drugs paradise (is Venezuela i know i live here) Argentina is broke thanks to populism and some breaking news: the most stable country here is Peru...Would you ever imagine that? Just a couple of decades before people run fast to find better lives outside Peru.
This exhibition when I saw it in May was so... mesmerizing to say the least. Like a breath of fresh air almost the camp exhibit was like a walk through visible history and tangible arts.
This exhibition is beautiful. I wished they leaned on extraordinary camp figures of color, too, though. Mostly all of the people referenced were white and educated. What about the ball culture in Harlem? Or even less underground, pop stars like Sylvester or film stars like Divine (even though not PoC)? I think there's too much credit for the intellectual camp than for those camp figures and movements that were more extreme and more fringe but were still influential to pop culture.
I could listen to Andrew teach me everything for hours....with examples......I would love to talk with him, debate, discuss and just absorb and listen..thank you for this!
i was able to see the exhibit a few days ago! Andrew Bolton's exhibitions have been an inspiration for my goals to curate fashion in the future after college - & this one is no different.. absolutely spectacular. thanks for a great video! :)
I know this exhibit limits itself on fashion, but the Naive Camp explains a LOT about The Room and Birdemic's popularity. Well maybe Sharknado as well, but that is debatable
As soon as I read this part, "In naïve, or pure, Camp, the essential element is seriousness, a seriousness that fails." I __immediately__ thought "The Room"!
When I first saw this exhibit in person I didn't know whether I liked it or not, but the more I looked into it I realized how interesting and unique it was- especially to the everyday museumgoer. Props to the Met!!
Maybe should have released some of this info to the attendees of the gala but we're here now. The pink wall choice is enchanting tbh. I want to seeeeeee this show
I went and the show is INCREDIBLE. I’ll be going back many times. It would have been great to have a longer audio loop and to cover some camp movies.. Jon Waters, Mommie Dearest, Showgirls.. etc...
Wow, this is so amazing!!!! I'm so glad for the internet, the allows us this much culture even being so far away! Thank you for the work you gave us, the exhibit is marvellous.
“Persons can even be induced to 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 without their knowing it. Consider the way Fellini got Anita Ekberg to parody herself in LA DOLCE VITA.” - Susan Sontag, NOTES ON “CAMP” (1964)
Is Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard an example of naïve 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑? Or is it an example of deliberate 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 because she knew she was parodying herself? Is Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest an example of intentional 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 that Sontag mentioned could be harmful?
All i can think about is this: the sixities have all the books you need about the world...Susan was ahead of her time. J.K Rowling probably comes from the sixities hahaha.
my god... it would be my DREAM to edit videos like this for vogue, the met, vanity fair, etc. i hope to be at the met gala within the next 5 years, working for vogue and making videos like this
This is so beautiful and amazing. It has beautiful purpose behind it. I am out of words!!! Lovvvved it!.Every person has a hidden "camp" in him and this is channeling it so amazingly. It has lot more than what people get to know. People understand so less about met gala and criticize it unnecessarily.
I love the way I can Street watching a video and not know anything about the topic and be done watching it and be more inspired n more interested in knowing more!!❣️❣️❣️ Love love love this segment much
Susan Sontag's essay was resposible for transforming Camp in a sophisticated style amongst the rich and powerful of the fashion world, but Camp as we know today was born from Black Drag Queens and the NYC Balls during the 60's and the 70's. She missed to mention that. But the exhibit is lovely, and the timeline they traced is amazing as well.
Sontag's essay was published in 1964, before 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 was supposedly born from black drag queens and the NYC ball scene during the 60's, 70's and 80's. Also lets not forget the way over the top drag balls of New Orleans in the 1950's. There is an entire etymological history of 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 that Andrew Bolton traced back to The Sun King's reign. The idea embodying 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 goes even farther back than that. It's noted Henry Trois extravagantly crossdressed and wore neck ruffles so large that his head looked like it was being served on a platter like John the Baptist. The rich and powerful had always been the ones with the most means go for the extravagant and ambitiously spend scarce resources on artifice: Roman Orgies, Chinese terracotta warriors, Nazca lines of Peru, ancient epic poems 16,000 lines long passed down orally through centuries from memory, and the list could go on. I understand your argument that the most recognisably American 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 fashion, expression, posturing and exhibition was kept alive, fostered and rediscovered popularly in the NYC ball atmosphere. I'm not discounting the contribution of 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 for black queens, but rather stating there can be no moment of birth since 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑 is eternal to the cultural evolution of humanity.
@@chesterplemany You are correct that I'm mostly referring to the American notion of /Camp/, but the style had been present centuries before although the word itself was used as a curseword. But the NYC Balls scene had been going on already when the first brick had been thrown at stonewall (1969). Back then it was secretive and illegal, not at all associated with glamour.
at around the 3:15 mark there is some background music and i'm trying to figure out the genre because i think it's really interesting and groovy, can someone help me out please?
justinpop Katy Perry wore a chandelier dress very similar to the one in 'Priscilla' at the gala. The flip flop slippers dress in that movie was awesome too.
Actually Katy Perry's dress was inspired by the iconic image of Marchesa Luisa Casati wearing a fountain dress designed by couturier Paul Poiret in the 1920's.
So nice to hear a video more directly referencing Camp relationship to the gay community, because lord knows a lot of people on the day of were trying their best not to even mention the gay aspect. Not to mention the celebrities who avoided dressing to the brief to avoid looking too gay and alienating their conservative fans.
To the two celebrities that were the suit with the writing on the back with the only ones that I didn’t like for this resin the fact that they were saying that black people created which was not the fact or actually true. Just a personal opinion seeing the exhibit explains its more than just a race color or sex
They could have at least added some of RuPual's dresses/gowns she wears in Drag Race. Or any design challenge winner. Nevertheless, they nailed this exhibition.
I love this but I feel like the actual exhibition feel very closed off, I went to last years ‘Heavenly Bodies’ exhibition and it felt so personal and amazing because you could actually go up close to the clothes and analyse everything whereas here, everything is behind glass and so high up that you can barely see it and can’t even look at the clothes in detail.

well obviously the exhibition would have to embody camp to a T
@James Ridge You are a terrible friend.
The Met liked this comment 😂

Hats off to the curator and set design of this exhibition- looks extraordinary
His name is Andrew Bolton & He has curated some really Iconic over the top Exhibits. He’s a True visionary!

Most at MET gala should have watched this. Especially the male celebs who shoulda been turned away at the door
Ian Galbraith omg tea
I disagree, most male nailed it. Some girls however, just relied on being glamorous and pretty. But a lot of celebrities also slayed the red carpet.
Ian Galbraith omg the met are so shady hearting this comment lmaooooo
angela tracy I know lol
"Camp is subjective"
I felt like this theme is the most high-brow intellectually stimulating not to mention educational so far The Met had out.
do the designers even do any sort of research into the historical and social contexts of the themes anymore? Like half of the met gala attendants doesn't seem to fit the bill
The fact that the Met liked this comment. I live.
I am in awe with these grand masters of fashion. It’s beautiful how they have paved the way for those who think out of our normal fashion techniques. Camp is and forever will be a love of mine.
Camp is lighthearted and fun. Camp makes you smile..it's disarming, almost, you gotta love it!

Congratulations on an extraordinary exhibition! Loved how the video narrated through the eras and timeline of camp, one of the best themes yet
I was smiling across this whole entire video. It was fantastic - this exhibition is revolutionary.
Fabulous show! and Mr Bolton ,fountain of knowledge and eloquent
so fascinating, could listen to this for hours! definitely one of the best themes so far 🖤
Tbh. I was really looking forward on what the men would wear. But sadly like every other met. They'd wear a simple black suit.
vanillapotato omg
Me too

Great job Andrew Bolton and the rest of the curatorial team. I cannot wait to see the exhibition in person.
Finally someone explained the theme. ”Camp” That I didn’t understand 😭😂
What a beautifully produced exhibition!!
This video should have been shown to everyone attending before picking outfits so they could get a better understanding on WHAT ACTUALLY TO WEAR...
Love how they choose camp for this met😍
Is that Cardi B's Grammy dress?
jc delrosario yup
yup! Her look is a dress from the from Muglers fall collection in 1995
It's vintage Mugler
it's not just cardi's grammy dress, it's a vintage mugler
Its a mugler archive

I just found out this video came out on my birthday thank you for the amazing birthday gift!
this exhibition is beautiful i cannot wait to see it!!
All the creativity in those designs!! 😍am soo inspired!!
Attendees should have been required to visit the exhibit before dressing for the event.
The concept of Naive Camp and Deliberate Camp really rang true at the Met Gala
Honestly this is one of the best met gala’s theme ever
Wished I could've seen this exhibition....beautiful.

Hail the Narrator!!! 😍
It would be a dream come true to attend this exhibit 😭 I’d know exactly how to dress too 😭😭😭😭
Love the narration of the CAMP. Interesting.
Great historic video, thank you
I wish I could attend this exhibition. Seriously. It would make me cry. It's so beautiful, innocent and smart. AH!!!
That’s beautiful unfortunately I don’t live in America for see this by my own eyes, but thank you to take me there mentally 💓
Im glad you mentioned the difference between unconscious and forced camp, as everyone at the gala forced it and therefor failed!
I wish "Priscilla, Queen of the desert" costumes were included. If that's not camp I don't know what is?

6:08 PALOMO SPAIIN..............SIIIIIIIII YEEES The video is very good. I Always think that The Nanny's Grandmother Yeda was the most camp you can get.
After all this, I still dont know what Camp is...!
Just think about nicki minaj in the early 2010s lol or lady gaga
Lady gaga was so spot on not just with her dress but with her dramatic appearance as well and so was billy porter
Love the voice of John at the end:)
Adorable clothes! 🌹🌹🌹
6:04 pearl harness reminds me of Hui’s look in Triple H’s Retro Future...
Paloma Spain is my favorite house of this decade, such rich pieces with no gender restraint is so thrilling and stunning
Most of the Celebrities didn't even know what Camp means and it clearly showed on the pink carpet.
It’s clear now that the majority of the celebrities in attendance didn’t understand the exhibition or the camp aesthetic whatsoever.
thank you for this video
Is the Candy Pop Harajuku style considered Naive Camp?
I did not know I am a camp in person. Thank you for this genius video...❤️❤️❤️
Are there any Divine costumes on show
Beautiful ❤️
Yet barely anyone dressed camp but I loved the explanation and the camp clothes features in this
Palomo 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
