- In this video, "Animals As Leaders" guitarist and AIM grad Tosin Abasi discusses how he found AIM and how it helped him as a musician; gaining endorsements; and landing on the cover of Guitar World Magazine with Steve Vai!

Hey guys! I was one of Tosin's teachers at AIM, and I can vouch for his humility and work ethic as well as his gifts on guitar.
It seems a bit silly to have a debate over the merits of his musical style; clearly not everybody likes all kinds of music, so we get nowhere throwing around terms like "horrible." If you don't enjoy this type of playing, listen to someone else. And, of course we would love to hear your work! Cheers! Randy
IMO the best guitar player in the world currently.
no way dude, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth, Brent Mason... Tosin is amazing but he's just a kid compared to some of these guys.
JamesBarneyMusic i like guthrie govan. he can really feel it. but he is not near to the technical flawlessness of Tosin
***** ok then
I've been around for a while... seen pretty much all of them. There is no "best" period. There's a point where you get so good you're basically a savant, and that point you're in a club. Tosin's in that club. Congrats. But he's no better or worse than Hendrix, Van Halen, trey azagthoth, Chris Letchford, Guthrie Govan. It's like trying to say Spaghetti is better than prime rib. They're both great depending on your mood, stop trying to make distinctions.
Charlie Mopps notice how i said "currently". as in modern guitarists. Van Halen was great for his time. as was hendrix. Guthrie Govan is great. and im not talking about innovation, or creativity, im just talking skill. ive never seen someone play a guitar like Tosin. so when it comes to skill, i feel safe in my opinion.
Amazing composer and player. Animals as Leaders is one of the most professional metal bands out there.
I don't deny their prowess, however I can't get into their music too much, kind of boring to be honest.
justin coulter I don't like their first or second albums, but the latest one is awesome.
i agree with justin coulter. Tosin is crazy good but i can't stand animals as leaders
Conshe Tumare thumbs down because it’s not a matter of not understanding, it’s a matter of not digging it, no need to denigrate.
You can almost smell the intelligence and ambition of this guy. (No irony) Very impressive.
Tosin is hands down a true virtuoso. Can't wait to hear what's after Joy of Motion.
Did you check their new song?
two new song)
three
10 now lol
M A D N E S S O F M A N Y
Tosin is very articulate and knows how to formulate his thoughts very well. I Enjoyed watching this interview.
That's funny cause like now he's like says 'like' after like almost like every word, ya'know.
@@Nullllus Now I can't stop to listen this 'likes'
@Joe Villa hard to deny that thats probably the reason :/
Tosin is a true inspiration. He is a throwback to the time when cats had to rely on their chops. He is also thoroughly modern. He is the perfect guitarist for this moment.
i like how he is into jazz
randomly got this in my recommend, happy to be here.
Tosin is a modern prodigy of guitar, pushing its limits and using those limits as motivation to push progressive rock and metal into directions that are sonically brand new. Been a fan of AAL since like 2012, and I’m always keen to hear more from them.
What a great young spirit! Humble, friendly, focused..... the cat is going places!!!
this dude is my hero man. I wanna go to Aimm so bad
Brandon L This video did it's job if I take you want to go. Did you end up going?
So articulate and well spoken as well. He's the baws dog.
My dad dropped out of high school when he was 16 to go here and graduated when he was 17 so it's kinda cool that he went to the same place
I love Tosin, he is such an amazing artist. I am so happy an artist like himself became a presence in my friends life as well as mine. Experiencing his music totally helped me become a better player. I feel thankful for the music he has composed.
abasi gives djent a new meaning
I remember seeing Reflux on tour in 05, in Panama City, FL. Tosin didn't even come out of the back room. He just sat in front of a laptop, with headphones on, playing guitar.
His dedication to guitar is insane.
Several people talking about technique and stuff, but in the end what really matters is that the guitarrist has a positive impact on you or inspires you with his music. Technique is just the means to do that. It's a relative thing of course. For example guitarrists suchs as Tosin Abasi and Buckethead for example , impact me and inspire me so much, but others such as Guthrie Govan do not , even though he's highly skilled. I guess people just love to classify and compare things in the sense that "mine is better than your's" kinda thing.
Yeah. Everything resonates with you more or less, like frequences. If you're at Tosin's frequency you're going to like his music, if not you'll find it boring and uninspired. Everything in this world is relative.
Heheh :)
I am not inspired much by Guthrie either , He is just not as melodic as Satriani, and fails to play metal convincingly, i would rather listen to Gary Hoey, who has less chops but more melodic songs .
I rather listen to Mac Alpine really.
Tony gets it , he is even going in a Djent direction , Andy James is good too
Very positive, cool and beautiful man!!! And my favorite musician!
"My limitations as a guitar player... my weak points..."
hmmm
nonexistent
I just hope that Hollywood doesn't turn him into another monster.
I am a 15 year percussionist...never touched a guitar in my life, but Tosin is one of my favorite people to listen to about music theory and such. Love how my/our generation is finally taking an interest in music and music theory not just Xbox and Halo
Man, i've been watching motivational videos all week to motivate myself to do my work,etc.. but for some reason, even though this isn't intentionally a motivational video, it has motivated me beyond anything i've watched in a long time. Thanks, Tosin, you're an amazing inspiration, and a perfect example of the results of hard work.
Well, Randy - every fan of Animals as Leaders and Tosin Abasi thanks you. I'm sure he was quite the shredder before you and the faculty helped to focus and refine his skills, but there is no doubt your teachings were invaluable. Not only is he amazing mechanically, but he has can actually write. Not to mention he's an awesome guy. I went to one of their shows about a year ago, and he and the whole band were incredibly gracious and hung out for a while after the show. Just great stuff.
Such an amazing person and an inspiration. This interview gives me so much hope.
I think people mistake arrogance for confidence and just all around awkwardness. Growing up in the jazz world I noticed this, aot of strong musicians are held in high regard and live in their own bubble, so to speak, and that's what I gathered when meeting tosin as well. Dudes a nice guy so dont knock him 😊
one of the most creative brains we have today
intelligence... this guy has it. Tosin absolutely SHREDS too
Not only a top, top player but seemingly a top guy as well. So many interviews serve little to no purpose but I feel so much better informed about Abasi's experiences and what's led him to become the success he now is. Inspirational for those of us who would love to 'live the dream', as he so rightly puts it.
I love that he seems positively giddy about what he has achieved in life, really cool to see! Seems like an awsome dude, extremely skilled and talented as well, both as a composer and a musician. Well deserved!
The crazy thing is, just as easily as you could aspire to be as good a guitarist as Tosin, you could aspire to be as well-spoken and knowledgeable as Tosin! A great teacher as well as musician.
Tosin is such an inspiration. Some days I pick up my guitar trying to write new songs and end up getting discouraged, and I wonder if I'll ever become truly good at the instrument. But as he says, not everything is easy and not everything comes naturally. Sometimes you just have to put in some serious effort to get to the next level.
You can develop as a musician to a higher level of understanding, but you won't unless you really work towards it. Tosin is ambitious and worked hard to be where he is now, so the same could happen with you if you study and practice.
There are vast amounts of money to be made in the film and television industry (commercials/public service announcements for TV/radio, motion picture soundtracks, etc). These jobs absolutely require the player to read--and read well. Here in Atlanta, such recording sessions often employ local symphony members whenever strings or horns are required. If sessions are ever stalled because a player's inability to read (perhaps because their parts have to be sung to them), they are quickly replaced.
Tosin deserves every aspect of his achievements, he has worked so hard.
He's a nice guy as well. He was cool and laid back when I met him... He wasn't too cool to take a shot of well whiskey with me and my friends
Tosin seems very clean cut to me
Tosin is so cool. I love people who can talk about themselves and the hard work that they have done without sounding arrogant.
What a cool cat.
Damn his teeth are perfect
I spent so long tryna find a comment on that lmao
Tosin is great I just hope he does stay humble like he is, he looks so inspired!
What a friggin' stud. When I saw Animals As Leaders for the first time, I was blown away. So amazing.
What an incredible interview with a humble and articulate musician! I respected his skill, but AAS isn't quite for me. However, after spending the last hour watching interviews of Tosin, and hearing both the knowledge and character he possesses, I now respect him as both a musician and a person. Consider your fanbase +1 as of today Tosin!
cant wait to see how good he is in 20 years
i like how when i first start this video on the lower left hand of the screen theres, "Play like Tosin Abasi" LOL
your the reason why i got my 8 string lol
congrats on this video, well deserved.
He is really humble. He just enjoys the music he is able to make which he has every right to do... I mean... He IS Tosin Abasi....
Tosin is The MAN!
Hard work pays off. The guy is very worthy of everything he's earned.
I think tosin's living the dream of musicians :)
Tosin is a boss
Man this college has no idea how much this guy blows up and the stuff he creates later on
humility, man. its underrated these days. He's a truly great man.
There is. There are ICMP in North London (where I attend), ACM in Guildford, the 2 BIMMS in Bristol and I believe the other is in Brighton as well as Tech music school. All amazing places.
such a cool, humble guy.. and a sick guitarist
What a genuinely incredible guy.
this guy is a wealth of musical knowledge, & a great person as well. I'm a drummer, and he makes me wanna learn guitar, but not even touch a guitar at the same time.. lol
Ah, seems like such a nice guy and what an amazing player. He deserves all his success no doubt!
Such a great person and amazing musician his approcach to writting on guitar is inspiring to say the least im aiming to get better everyday and crafting my own unique sound and voice just like him.
He's such a well-spoken and humble seeming guy.
tosin speaks with much more ease and confidence after doing all those clinics.
This guy is so well-versed and articulate. Even as a person, he just seems like a swell dude.
I hope Tosin inspires the newer generations of guitar players to learn theory and so on :)
my nigga
I met him class act dude
cute, handsome guy with a gorgeous smile....and of course he's talented:)
Saw them open for Meshuggah, One of the best live acts I've ever experienced...the drummer is almost more exciting then Tosin but they are all phenomenal none the less. Very unique and creative.
I just bought it a couple days ago, and it is phenomenal!
People arguing about techniques, are forgetting you have to COMPOSE something. If you can't make unique and memorable melodies then you're just a midi file. There are a gazillion fusion guitarists who can all play the same speed and same phrases, but not everyone has the ability to structure a good song.
This is what tosin is the best IMO when it comes to creating music
What music . What a guy .
I'm so fucking happy Tosin was born
Gotta start with a small passage or a simpler progression.... It's going to be overwhelming to start with such advanced music. This doesn't mean it won't ever be possible. A big error is to take on too much too early. Once you get the hang of playing changes, things will become easier. I remember feeling the same way, but you will make breakthroughs. Don't be discouraged!
what a great guy. i wish him the best
Awesome interview. I can't wait to see AAL live in a week!
Tosin Abasi.... hes doin it right
Thanks!I get the feeling you are a great teacher.
Man! You sound great! and I totally understand what you're saying.. I play by ear to and had to force my self to learn more about theory to help facilitate my midi programing/ composition. Congrats on the great music creativity! Sincerely, Karl. AKA Xarl (instrumental)
how I love this smile...
It's about 1:30 into the song called Cylindrical Sea of the Weightless album
BTW I meant that I am a pianist and composer... Thus my ability to study the guitar technique is less developed. I study the harmony and composition. Some of our teachers at AIM have definitely worked on Holdsworth's style... Bill Hart, Steve Reick and Carl Culpepper all discuss him in class from time to time.
around 25 cause he released the AAL debut album in 2009 and he said he finished the course before recording it and he's 29 now. =)
Tosin is a musical genius.
amazing player, amazing guy.
This is literally the best celebrity endorser you could ask for in the guitar world right now, probably for the next few decades too. I wonder if this has affected the tuition costs since Tosins rise
what an elaborate title sequence
that beatboxer is genuine too man...
What a cool guy. Reflux was actually really good, they only put out one album, but it should still be available. Little but more straight forward metal than AAL, but Tosin's influence is def there, and the drummer is super tight too.
Hahaha, "this is going to be in supermarkets", I read that issue in Fry's marketplace, pretty cool.
I like this guy; he's a great player.
That's easy to say when referencing a scenario where hard work resulted in success. But lots of people work hard and don't succeed. The recipe for success can't just be summarized in four words.
While going to school is great, and we would love to have you, I understand the financial burden. If you are willing to practice constantly, you can do great things. In this era of online video, you can pretty much study on your own. My friend Adam Nitti has some great online lessons. Pick some great recordings and learn every note! As far as harmony, "The Jazz Theory Book" by Mark Levine is a great text. Looking forward to hearing some of your music!
Look up ACM in Guildford or BIMM in Brighton/Bristol. I asked Nolly from Periphery if there's anything like MI in the UK and he recommended those two.
A God walking among mere mortals.
Fantastic interview!
I love how this genuinely innovative guitarist and all round musical genius is getting 3,600 views on this video and the featured video to the right titled Amazing Beatboxer Harassed by Police has 5,000,000... Welcome to youtube people!
an intelligent mind right there.
"Musicianship is reentering the picture" many bands that actually UNDERSTAND that are actually taking music in the correct direction and Tosin happens to be one of the Pioneers of the movement. And if you are just trying to have a discussion, bashing on an accomplished and very well-off musician after they have put in A LOT of hard work isn't a good way to have a positive discussion. And does being musical determine whether or not YOU like someone? What makes your basis of liking someone better?
Good for u man
This is cool, I wonder of they offer online? I have a degree already but want something accelerated and to up my level and compositional skills.
im super interested on going but im from paraguay
Ladies and Gentlemen: Mr. Tosin Abasi!
