I Hated Soil Blocks Till The Swiftblocker!

  • The first time I saw the Swiftblocker online was an "ah ha" moment for me that left me wondering why this tool took so long to get into my life. And now that I have one on the farm, I'm completely converted. I will be making a lot of soil blocks over the next few years, and I want all of you to know about the Swiftblocker too!
Though I am currently using this on my flower farm, this would be a very valuable tool for a veggie farm as well. And with the option of the 72 block maker, you could grow larger seedlings like peppers and tomatoes, as well as the quicker transplants like lettuce in the 200.

Serina, I swear, Swift Blocker needs to send you a big fat check for doing this great commercial about their product. Come on, Swift Blocker, send her a healthy sum of money! Because of Serina and Ian's previous coverage of this tool, and now this "commercial", I went to Swift Blocker website. I never would've thought of doing soil blocking because my hands aren't strong. After what Serina said about hand strength, I may very well buy the Swift Blocker 72, and possibly the spacer.
    Thank you Serina! Impressively done!

I also enjoyed your video on the Mars Hydro light versus weaker lights; I used to grow cannabis with a WONDERFUL Mars Hydro light, and you addressed the main concern I foresaw, which was that the light is so powerful I suspected it would burn my seedlings unless I budgeted them twice as much vertical space as I do now. Awesome to know I can just use Promix. This was my first year soil blocking. I had mixed results with the exception of Lisianthus. Lisianthus loves soil blocks! I feel like some of the problems I encountered were due to the recipe using coco coir and a coco coir based soil, the plants did not grow very well. They germinated pretty great, but then just sat there. Sbapdragons sat there and then dampened off. I am goimg to use Promix next year.

I've recently thought of a new use for soil-blockers.
    Are you into 'Guerilla Gardening'?
Your soil-blockers are a great tool for crafting "seed bombs" with your favorite wildflowers or decorative whatevers.
The simplest way to do it is mix up a bunch of clay with your seeds-of-choice. For me it would be california poppies; I love the super-blooms and I'd love to add to it here and there LOL but for you it may be a local native wildflower mix. Whatever.
Spread your clay, pour on the seeds, mix thoroughly and use your soil-blockers to make cubes.
Optionally, add in something large (like a sunflower seed, or milkweed for butterflies) in the dibble hole and close it up.
Leave them on a tray out in the sun to dry out.
Now you have a bunch of "seed-bombs" and you can take them in the car on your next drive and drop them at the side of the road or along the highway on your way from here to there and back.
After it rains, the seeds will sprout and grow wildflowers (and whatever else) wherever you dropped them.
Another option is guerilla food gardening. (This is all about Emergency Preparedness.) Instead of wildflower seeds or sunflower seeds, you could use lettuce and tomato seeds and add in something like squash or pumpkin seeds, radish, carrot, beet seeds. Anything you may consider survival foods. Or if you want to make hunting easier in hard times, you could put those seed bombs in places where you want wild boar rooting for them.
Bonus Points: You could add an element of fun to this. These are small enough blocks that you can use a slingshot to distribute your seed-bombs into empty fields or random bits of woods. Fire off shots from your car window (when there's nobody else around) to launch your seed-bombs further from the road/highway. (Using clay means you're not limited to blocks; You can shape your seed-bombs into a more ballistic form for your slingshot.)
    Have fun!
