He is a hard worker. I'm 61- I don't think I've the discipline to pull this size operation off .... in an Australian climate. But he is using an 'Eden Garden' principal with his mulching ... in a way. Now Curtis Stone was saying that an 'E G' system using mulch wouldn't work for market gardeners, but here we are, well done.

Jim’s produce isn’t the cheapest, but it is always the best looking stuff at the market. He puts care into it, and it’s a fair price for the effort he expands. There’s not a day that I don’t see him out there on his hands and knees working.

I love Jim’s passionate connection to the earth and his plants. All our farmers once shared this connection before mechanization and industrialization.
“And when that crop grew, and was harvested, no man had crumbled a hot clod in his fingers and let the earth sift past his fingertips. No man had touched the seed, or lusted for the growth. Men ate what they had not raised, and had no connection to the bread. The land bore under iron, and under iron gradually died; for it was not love or hated, it had no prayers or curses.”

The perfect lighting for the garden; it's glowing! To those like me who moved to central Florida: I live 15 miles away from Jim and my climate is much more like Pete's. No broccoli, lettuce, beets until Fall again. The sun is brutal already on April 2. Jim's property is close to the Gulf and he's been developing that soil with loads and loads of compost over the years. Yes we can do it but within parameters. Properties near the water (much more temperate) are $$ and also often with HOA's and restrictions. I'm working on experimentation with planting tender crops in areas which only get morning sun; will see how that goes in terms of day length. Also will try some shade cloth over raised beds. Soon will be planting okra, corn and pumpkins, among others. This weekend I'm planting over 40 fruit trees. Lots of mulberries, I think of them as the radishes of the Florida tree selection. Easy!

Last year we moved one hour north and a few hundred feet higher in elevation from our last place... and it's VERY different. I find it fascinating how climate and weather change between close areas, even on one side of a hill compared to the other.
We all have to adapt to the conditions we're in, and I think that's part of the fun.

Broccoli already bolted, lettuce is mad at me, but the kale is holding up and European eggplant is growing but I really need to stay on top of cut worms! I only grow grape tomatoes 🍅 and they are holding up well. Try growing sissoo spinach and winged beans along with sweet potatoes. I’m planting mulberry as well with yucca, papaya, and banana. You need compost, biochar, compost tea, mulch and or cover crops

    • @dogslobbergardens6606
      @dogslobbergardens6606 2 роки тому +4

What Hosoi Archives said, plus: Comfrey tea is great. Or just chop the comfrey leaves and use them as mulch.
I use a fair amount of grass clipping tea and "weeds" tea, too. There's a lot of nutrients and minerals in those plants. I let the grass and "weeds" grow long to allow their roots to get deep in the soil, then mow them down and just soak them in water for a couple weeks. Strain the plant material out and put it in your compost pile or use it as mulch. Dilute the liquid with more water (roughly 1 part tea to 10 parts plain water) and give that to your plants 2 or 3 times a month.
For nitrogen-hungry crops, human pee diluted with 10 parts plain water give a nice boost of nitrogen and trace elements. Just be cautious if you're on a lot of medications, that might be an issue, I don't know.
As you build up healthy soil and especially using cover crops over a couple seasons and beyond, you will need less and less fertilizer.

Many gardeners use this concept to keep those plants upright and strong and for good reason. This is one of the easiest trellises to build and it’s a really strong one that won’t cave to the weight of your plants.

“I don’t want be a machine operator, I want be a gardener”…. I love this. Still, automated watering system is a good thing and efficient.

I disagree you did not come home with $800 for one days work. You worked many days for that money, and you deserve to be paid well for your time and quality of plants.

What is that tool he’s using to plant the soil blocks? Amazing farmer, we need more like him in this world. Thanks for sharing this video.

Colonialism is embedded in the structure of government and paid for by industry. Remember: Secretary of Agriculture, Earl Butz, "Get Big or Get Out"? Nagano, Japan has an interesting way of mentoring and encouraging farmers on the land as seen in a yt video by Tokyo Llama. Very interesting governmental structure based on knowledge of the people, place, plants and animals. Refreshing. Love you guys work, experience, approach and philosophy. Thanks for sharing.

The colonialist/industrial/capitalist agriculture system in America is really messed-up. All my life I've known "conventional" farmers who are stuck in that trap, and they can never figure out why they're always broke. :/
Just the fact that we call that crazy destructive method of farming "conventional" is a good example of the marketing/brainwashing behind it.

Dear Peter, I've just come across your channel on UA-cam. I remember when Bill Mollison and David Holmgren published "Permaculture One" in 1978. I was working at the University of Tasmania Library, and there was a huge display in the window of the university bookshop. Later, in 1986, a friend of mine who knew Bill and I stayed at his place in Stanley, Tasmania, and went to a great dance in the community hall. A cobber of mine was in the band, which played mainly folk music, I asked them to play some rock and roll, and they played a splendid version of the Rolling Stones ' "Walking the Dog". Bill was a fascinating man. More of a showman than David Holmgren though. I love your stuff, and especially the bloke in this, the first episode I watched. Cheers from Tasmania, Kerry.
